A Comparative Study on Corrosion Behavior of Ti-35Nb-5Ta-7Zr, Ti-6Al-4V and CP-Ti in 0.9 wt% NaCl

  • Recently, quaternary titanium alloys of the system Ti-Nb-Ta-Zr received considerable research interest as potential implant materials because of their excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility. However, only few reported works were available on the corrosion behavior of such alloys. Hence, in the present work, electrochemical corrosion of Ti-35Nb-5Ta-7Zr alloy, which has been fabricated by arc melting and heat treatment, was studied in 0.9 wt% NaCl at $37\pm1^{\circ}C$, along with biomedical grade Ti-6Al-4V and CP-Ti. The phase and microstructure of the alloys were investigated employing XRD and SEM. The results of electrochemical studies indicated that the corrosion resistance of the quaternary alloy was inferior to that of Ti-6Al-4V and CP Ti.

Effects of Flux and Ta5+ Substitution on the Photoluminescence of Lu(Nb,Ta)O4:Eu3+ Phosphors (융제 및 Ta5+ 치환이 Lu(Nb,Ta)O4:Eu3+ 형광체의 발광 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • $Lu(Nb,Ta)O_4:Eu^{3+}$ powders are synthesized by a solid-state reaction process using LiCl and $Li_2SO_4$ fluxes. The photoluminescence (PL) excitation spectra of the synthesized powders consist of broad bands at approximately 270 nm and sharp peaks in the near ultraviolet region, which are assigned to the $Nb^{5+}-O^{2-}$ charge transfer of $[NbO_4]^{3-}$ niobates and the f-f transition of $Eu^{3+}$, respectively. The PL emission spectra exhibit red peaks assigned to the $^5D_0{\rightarrow}^7F_J$ transitions of $Eu^{3+}$. The strongest peak is obtained at 614 nm ($^5D_0{\rightarrow}^7F_2$), indicating that the $Eu^{3+}$ ions are incorporated into the $Lu^{3+}$ asymmetric sites. The addition of fluxes causes the increase in emission intensity, and $Li_2SO_4$ flux is more effective for enhancement in emission intensity than is LiCl flux. The substitution of $Ta^{5+}$ for $Nb^{5+}$ results in an increase or decrease in the emission intensity of $LuNb_{1-x}Ta_xO_4:Eu^{3+}$ powders, depending on amount and kind of flux. The findings are explained using particle morphology, modification of the $[NbO_4]^{3-}$ structure, formation of substructure of $LuTaO_4$, and change in the crystal field surrounding the $Eu^{3+}$ ions.

Effects of Nb Addition on Corrosion Resistance and Cytotoxicity Behavior of Ti Alloys (Nb이 첨가된 Ti합금의 내식성 및 생체안정성)

  • The corrosion resistance and cytotoxicity behavior of Ti alloys were studied as a function of Nb contents(3wt.%Nb, 20wt.%Nb, 40wt.%Nb). Ti-Nb alloys were melted by vacuum arc furnace and then rolled to 50% reduction ratio after homogenized at 105$0^{\circ}C$ for 24hrs. The corrosion resistance of Ti-Nb alloys were investigated by potentiodynamic polarization test in the 0.9% NaCl and 5% HCI solution. Biocompatibility of Ti-Nb alloys was evaluated by cytotoxicity test. The results can be summarized as follows 1) The microstructure change from equiaxial to acicular and the increased $\beta$ phase in Ti-Nb alloys were obtained as the Nb content increased. 2) For the corrosion test in the solution of 0.9% NaCl and 5% HCI, the corrosion behavior of Ti-Nb alloys was similar to ASTM grade 2 CP Ti. 3) For the cytotoxicity test, Ti-Nb alloys showed excellent biocompatibility compared to ASTM grade 2 CP Ti, 316L STS and Co-Cr alloys.

  • 무독성 원소를 포함하는 Ti-35Nb-x(3, 5, 7, 10, 15)Zr 합금을 제조하여 양극산화 방법을 통해 표면에 nanotube를 형성한 후 0.9% NaCl 용액에서 부식특성을 관찰하였다. 합금 표면에 형성된 안정된 nanotube 형태의 $TiO_2$, $Nb_2O_5$$ZrO_2$가 내식성 향상에 영향을 주었음을 알 수 있었다.

Surface Reaction of Na0.5K0.5NbO3 Thin Films in Inductively Coupled BCl3/Cl2/Ar Plasma (BCl3/Cl2/Ar 플라즈마에서의 Na0.5K0.5NbO3 박막의 표면반응)

  • The etch of $(Na_{0.5}K_{0.5})NbO_3$ (NKN) thin film was performed in $BCl_3/Cl_2/Ar$ inductively coupled plasma. It was found that the 1sccm addition $BCl_3$ (5%) into $Cl_2/Ar$ plasma caused a non-monotonic behavior of the NKN etch rate. The maximum etch rate of NKN was 95.3 nm/min at $BCl_3$ (1 sccm)/$Cl_2$ (16 sccm)/Ar (4 sccm), 800 W ICP power, 1 Pa pressure and 400 W bias power. The NKN etch rate shows a monotonic behavior a s the bias power increases. The analysis of the narrow scan spectra of XPS for both a s-deposited and etched NKN films allowed one to assume ion assisted etch mechanism. The most probable reason for the maximum etch rate can be defined as a concurrence of chemical and physical etch pathways.

  • Electrochemical properties of Ti-30Ta-$(3{\sim}15)$Nb alloys coated by HA/Ti compound layer have been studied by various electrochemical method. Ti-30Ta binary alloys contained 3, 7, 10, and 15 wt% Nb contents were manufactured by the vacuum furnace system. The specimens were homogenized for 24 hrs at $1000^{\circ}C$. The samples were cut and polished for corrosion test and coating. It was coated with HA/Ti compound layer by magnetron sputter. The HA/Ti non-coated and coated morphology of Ti alloy were analyzed by x-ray diffractometer(XRD) and filed emission scanning electron microscope(FE-SEM). The corrosion behaviors were investigated using potentiodynamic method in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The homoginazed Ti-30Ta-$(3{\sim}15wt%$)Nb alloys showed the ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ phase, and ${\beta}$ phase peak was predominantly appeared with increasing Nb content. The microstructure of Ti alloy was transformed from needle-like structure to equiaxed structure as Nb content increased. HA/Ti composite surface showed uniform coating layer with 750 nm thickness. The corrosion resistance of HA/Ti composite coated Ti-alloys were higher than those of the non-coated samples in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. Especially, corrosion resistance of Ti-Ta-Nb system increased as Nb content increased.

Hydrogen Generation through the Reaction with Water of MgO, MgCl2 or Ni+Nb2O5 - Added Magnesium Hydrides

  • Hydrogen was generated by the reaction of metal hydride with water. The variation of hydrogen generation with the kind of powders (milled $MgH_2$, and $MgH_2$ milled with various contents of MgO, $MgCl_2$ or $Ni+Nb_2O_5$) was investigated. $MgH_2$ powder with a hydrogen content of 6.05 wt% from Aldrich Company was used. Hydrogen is generated by the reaction of Mg as well as $MgH_2$ with water, resulting in the formation of byproduct $Mg(OH)_2$. For about 5 min of reaction time, milled $95%MgH_2+5%MgO$ has the highest hydrogen generation rate among milled $MgH_2+x%MgO$ (x=0, 5, 10, 15 and 20) samples. Milled $90%MgH_2+10%MgCl_2$ has the highest hydrogen generation rate among all the samples.

Effect of Blanching Conditions on Qualities and Nutritional Characteristics of Sweet pumpkin (블랜칭 처리가 단호박의 품질특성과 항산화활성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study investigated the quality characteristics of sweet pumpkin after blanching. Sweet pumpkins were blanched in distilled water, 2% citric acid and 2% NaCl water at 100℃ for 3 min. The cooking loss of sweet pumpkin in the blanching groups was lower than that in the control group, and greenness and yellowness in the blanching groups were higher than those in the control group (p<0.001). Total polyphenol content (TPC) of sweet pumpkin increased after blanching (p<0.05), and TPC true retention (TR) was measured with the highest NB. CON and NB were significantly higher in ?-carotene content (p<0.001). Lutein content in the blanching treatment groups was lower than that in the control group, but NB was the highest between the blanching groups (p<0.001). DPPH and ABTS+ radical scavenging activity assays revealed higher antioxidant activity in the NB groups among the blanching groups (p<0.001). The CON was 2.44 log colony-forming unit (CFU)/ g in the total bacterial count, but there were no microorganisms in the blanching groups. In conclusion, blanching with the addition of 2% NaCl can inhibit the growth of microorganisms and improve TR and antioxidant activities in sweet pumpkin.
