To develope a hull form of catamaran type dredging vessel, resistance characteristics is investigated to find the interaction effect of waves between the two hulls. Re fore body shape is simplified as two dimensional wedge shape for the maintenance and disassembly/assembly. Based on MAC method, numerical simulation is performed in staggered variable mesh system. Re conservation form of Euler equations and continuity equation are applied as governing equations. To verify numerical methods, the wive patterns along the hull surface are compared with the results of model tests. This study is performed as varying wedge shape of the bow and the distance between the two hulls. The wave interaction between two hulls are observed to investigate the relation the resistance performance and the flow characteristics. Suitable hull form and distance between two hulls are discussed.
Since the power capacity needed for the propulsion of large ships is very large, a multiphase AC induction propulsion mode is generally adopted to meet the higher requirements of reliability, redundancy and maintainability. This paper gives a detailed description of the development of a 20MW fifteen-phase PWM driver for advanced fifteen-phase propulsion induction motors with a special third-harmonic injection in terms of the main circuit hardware, control system design, experiments, etc. The adoption of the modular design method for the main circuit hardware design can make the enclosed mechanical structure simple and maintainable. It can also avoid the larger switch stresses caused by the multiple turn on of the IGBTs in conventional large-capacity converter systems. The use of the distributed controller design method based on a high-speed fiber-optic ring net for the control system can overcome such disadvantages as the poor reliability and long maintenance times arising from the conventional centralized controller which is designed according to point-to-point communication. Finally, the performance of the 20MW PWM driver is verified by experimentation on a new fifteen-phase induction propulsion motor.
This study is to develop database by an experimental method for the development of condition based maintenance for auxiliary equipment in marine engine systems. Existing ships have been performing regular maintenance, so the actual measurement data development is very incomplete. Therefore, it is best to develop a database on land tests. In this paper, a database developed by an experimental method is presented. First, failure case analysis and reliability analysis were performed to select a failure mode. For the failure simulation test, a test bed for land testing was developed. The failure simulation test was performed based on the failure simulation scenario in which the failure simulation test plan was defined. A 1.5TB failure simulation database has been developed, and it is expected to serve as a basis for ship failure diagnosis and prediction algorithm model development.
In recent practice a half round prismatic bar has fillet welded or formed through foundry work along the centerline on rear concave surface of the horn to mitigate gap flow between fixed and movable part of the rudder system. When the gap clearance has been blocked with this practice, numerical simulations indicate that the practices are not only effective in reducing the gap flow but also in mitigating the cavitation. The blocking effects are remarkably improved when a pair of blocking bar is bisymmetrically attached with respect to centerline on the opposite convex surface of the movable part. The blocking bar could be placed on the exposed surface under maximum rudder angle. This implies that the blocking bar could be easily adopted not only in a design stage but also in a maintenance stage for mitigating rudder cavitation. In addition, the numerical simulations imply that more improvements could be anticipated through the selection of section shape of prismatic bar for gap flow blocking.
Recently ships and ocean platforms are becoming increasingly technological, unmanned, and huge. Maintenance and safety monitoring of these products is very important for safety reasons. Therefore, real-time monitoring of safety regions, such as the engine room, and hull structure, and environmental states, like fire and pressure of LNG tanks, is required for the sustainable ships. In this paper, a ZigBee-based wireless sensor network is suggested to monitor ships and ocean platforms effectively. However, this causes some telecommunication problems because these products are made of steel. To resolve this problem, we use the mesh networking of Zig-Bee that can monitor the regions and environmental states consistently. The telecommunication of such a monitoring system is tested on a real container ship and its performance is verified. The real-time monitoring results are displayed on the users' smart devices.
Most real world design evaluation and risk-based decision support combine quantitative and qualitative (linguistic) variables. Decision-making based on conventional mathematics that combines qualitative and quantitative concepts always exhibit difficulty in modelling actual problems. The successful selection process for choosing a design/procurement proposal is based on a high degree of technical integrity, safety levels and low costs in construction, corrective measures, maintenance, operation, inspection and preventive measures. However, the objectives of maximising the degree of technical performance, maximising the safety levels and minimising the costs incurred are usually in conflict, and the evaluation of the technical performance, safety and costs is always associated with uncertainties, especially for a novel system at the initial concept design stage. In this paper, a design-decision support framework using a composite structure methodology grounded in approximate reasoning approach and evidential reasoning method is suggested for design evaluation of machinery space of a ship engine room at the initial stages. It is a Multiple Attribute Decision-Making (MADM) or Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) framework, which provides a juxtaposition of cost, safety and technical performance of a system during evaluation to assist decision makers in selecting the winning design/procurement proposal that best satisfies the requirement in hand. An illustrative example is used to demonstrate the application of the proposed framework.
The purpose of this study was to find the optimal arrangement of FPSO equipment in a module while considering the economic value and fire risk. We estimated the economic value using the pipe connections and pump installation cost in an HP (high pressure) gas compression module. The equipment risks were also analyzed using fire scenarios based on historical data. To consider the wind effect during a fire accident, fuzzy modeling was applied to improve the accuracy of the analysis. The objective functions consisted of the economic value and fire risk, and the constraints were the equipment maintenance and weight balance of the module. We generated a Pareto-optimal front group using a multi-objective GA (genetic algorithm) and suggested an equipment arrangement method that included the opinions of the designer.

In recent practices, a half circular prismatic bar protruding beyond the concave surface of the horn facing the gap has been formed along the centerplane of a rudder to lessen the gap flow between the horn and the movable portion of the rudder system. If a flow through the gap of a rudder is reduced considerably through this approach, previous numerical studies indicate that not only the gap flow but also the rudder cavitation can be noticeably diminished. In the present study, numerical simulations on two-dimensional rudder sections were performed to show that the blocking ability of the single centre bar can be improved by the proper choice of sectional shape. Moreover, a pair of blocking bars attached symmetric to the centerplane on the opposite convex surface of the movable portion is suggested in the study as well, to circumvent the difficulties arising from the practical application of the single centre bars. The bars are placed near the outer edges of the gap easily accessible at the maximum rudder angle to allow simple installation of the device during a maintenance period of a ship. It is found that the pair of blocking bars further improves the blocking effects and application to a practical three-dimensional rudder also backs up the fact.
The Boil-off gas (BOG) generation during the voyage is inevitable since Natural Gas (NG) in normally liquefied below -160 degree C in atmosphere condition and small heat ingress due to relatively hot outside keeps evaporating continuously. The one of major issue in LNG carriers is to handle generated BOG from cargo tank. The generated BOG affects to increase the cargo tank pressure and Gas Management System (GMS) for LNG carriers is closely related to cargo tank pressure maintenance. Economically, BOG is generally used as fuel in LNG carrier. Newly developed GMS for LNG carrier in boiler propulsion system, VaCo System, not only accomplish automatic control in GMS but also ensure safer operation.
Queueing system with scheduled arrivals is useful in many fields where both customers' waiting time and servers' operation time (utilization) are important, and arrival time of customers is possible to be controlled. In this paper, we analyzed the operation of ship maintenance with the queueing system with scheduled arrival. Based on the model presented by Pegden and Rosenshine [8], who dealt with exponential service time, we extended the service time distributions to phase-type distribution which is able to include a wide range of real stochastic phenomena. Since most activities in the military are carried out under tight control and schedule, scheduled arrival queue has quite good applicability in this area. In this context, we applied queue with scheduled arrival to the optimal booking time decision for the ship maintenance in the navy.
