  • Deck wetness phenomenon has long been considered as one of the factors that degrade the performance of a ship In waves. In rough weather, the frequent skipping of water may give rise to the capsizing of the ship. Therefore an appropriate above water bow shape design is an important asset to a ship of which successful performance in rough weather is a prerequisite such as a warship. In this paper an experimental technique for estimation of deck-wetness frequency is presented. The results of the model tests are compared with those of computations using Ochi's formula. Finally the applicability of Ochi's formula is discussed.

  • Springing and whipping are becoming increasingly important considerations in ship design as container ships increase in size. In this study, the springing and whipping characteristics of a large container ship were investigated through a series of systematic model tests in waves. A multi-segmented hull model with a backbone was adopted for measurement of springing and whipping signals. A conversion method for extracting torsion springing and whipping is described in this paper for the case of an open-section backbone. Higher-order springing, higher-mode torsion responses, and the effects of linear and nonlinear springing in irregular waves are highlighted in the discussion.

  • In this paper, the membrane and buckling analysis of beams with various shaped brackets is performed by using the finite element method. From the viewpoint of minimum structural weight, a optimum design method to determine the optimal shapes and scantling of brackets under design load is proposed by investigating the effects of beam depth, bracket length and aspect ratio on the structural weight. Also optimal design data and charts for the brackets to support transverse girders or web frames of actual ships are provided. By the present design method, it is possible to perform optimum design of brackets used in actual ships, which could result in considerable reduction of structural weight or cost, increase of dead weight and service speed of ships.

  • Exact solution on the anti-symmetric response of ships having uniform sectional properties in waves is derived. Boundary value problem consisted of Timoshenko beam equation and free-free end condition is solved analytically. The responses are assumed as linear and wave loads are calculated by using strip method. Horizontal bending moment, shear force and torsional moment are calculated. The developed analysis model is used for the benchmark test of the numerical codes in this problem. Also the application on the preliminary design of barge-like ships and VLFS (Very Large Floating Structure) is expected

  • This paper was intended to compare the relationship between sectional form of ships and wave making resistance by calculating the resistance value practically rather than theoretically. As the sectional form of ships, four types of quadratic ship forms was introduced and he wave making resistance was calculated by the Slender Ship Theory. The main result obtained in this paper is the following. The relationship between the displacement distribution of draught direction in the given sectional form of ships and the resistance value was shown. It was supposed that the resistance value will decrease with the increase of the displacement distribution of draught direction and it was proved by the numerical value.

  • The two most important tasks of icebreakers are first to secure a sailing route by breaking the thick sea ice and second to sail efficiently herself for purposes of exploration and transportation in the polar seas. The resistance of icebreakers is a priority factor at the preliminary design stage; not only must their sailing efficiency be satisfied, but the design of the propulsion system will be directly affected. Therefore, the performance of icebreakers must be accurately calculated and evaluated through the use of model tests in an ice tank before construction starts. In this paper, a new procedure is developed, based on model tests, to estimate a ship's ice breaking resistance during continuous ice-breaking in ice. Some of the factors associated with crushing failures are systematically considered in order to correctly estimate her ice-breaking resistance. This study is intended to contribute to the improvement of the techniques for ice resistance prediction with ice breaking ships.

  • Seakeeping performance of container ships is investigated in view of increase of their size in terms of TEU. Recent appearance of post Panamax class containers resulted in increase of GM, so increase of possibility of resonant motion in waves is expected accordingly. Ship motions of various classes of TEU containers were calculated for various sea states and heading angles in order to assess seakeeping characteristics according to increase of size of the ships. It was found that roll motion of post Panamax containers increase due to resonance as sea state becomes rougher. The possibility of controlling roll motion by changing main particulars such as L, B, and T is investigated as well.

  • In rough seas, bow-flare regions of the sea-going ships are subject to high impact pressures due to the bow-flare slamming and panting. And many ships suffer structural damages in that region, even though they were built under the bow structure strengthening rules of the ship classes. So, a new design method for bow-flare structure is highly required. In this paper, bow-flare damage analysis is performed for 17 ships (total number of damage/non-damage data is 782). Based on this analysis, a new design standard and method for bow-flare structure (shell plate, frame and web frame) is proposed. 80.4% of the present damage/non-damage data were well-explained by this new design standard.

  • In this paper, the mechanics of ships in grounding with a forward speed is analyzed. A raking damage estimate model in grounding of ships is proposed. The accuracy and applicability of the model are verified by a comparison of experimental results. The progressive collapse analysis of damaged gull sections under vertical bending moments is described by using the ALPS/ISUM computer code. The procedure is applied to grounding simulation of a double hull tanker with a transverseless system.
