Physical Properties of the Hardened Loess Using Natural Binding Materials (천연 결합재를 사용한 황토경화체의 물성에 대한 연구)

  • In this study, hardened loess bodies, which did not compose of cement or any chemical binder, were made and tested to evaluate the physical properties such as slump, air content, and compressive strength. Addition of a natural binding material to mixture of loess and lime showed better performance in physical properties. However a lime among natural binding materials is considered as a superior binder to improve the properties of the hardened bodies. According to the experimental results, mixing proportion with 45% of W/B ratio, $285kg/m^3$ of water content, and 60% lime substitution ratio was recommended to acquire the good performance of physical properties for the hardened loess bodies.

  • This paper reports an experimental investigation conducted to evaluate the durability performance of concrete mixtures prepared utilizing blends of Type I Portland cement (OPC) and natural pozzolans (NPs) obtained from three different sources in Saudi Arabia. The control concrete mixture containing OPC alone as the binder and three concrete mixtures incorporating NPs were prepared keeping water/binder ratio of 0.4 (by weight), binder content of $370kg/m^3$, and fine/total aggregate ratio of 0.38 (by weight) invariant. The compressive strength and durability properties that included depth of water penetration, depth of carbonation, chloride diffusion coefficient, and resistance to reinforcement corrosion and sulfate attack were determined. Results of this study indicate that at all ages, the compressive strength of NP-admixed concrete mixtures was slightly less than that of the concrete containing OPC alone. However, the concrete mixtures containing NP exhibited lower depth of water penetration and chloride diffusion coefficient and more resistance to reinforcement corrosion and sulfate attack as compared to OPC. NP-admixed concrete showed relatively more depth of carbonation than OPC when subjected to accelerated carbonation. The results of this investigation indicates the viability of utilizing of Saudi natural pozzolans for improving the durability characteristics of concrete subjected to chloride and sulfate exposures.

  • New photopolymers were designed and prepared using the photosensitive polymer binders. The photochemical reaction of the photosensitive polymer binder was studied by virtue of UV absorption and infrared spectroscopy. The holographic gratings were successfully fabricated in these photopolymer film samples by conventional optical interference method. We also investigated the effect of photocrosslink in the polymer binder on the diffraction behavior of the photopolymer. The dynamic behaviors of the grating formation were studied with the change of exposure intensity in terms of the diffraction efficiency. Particularly, we focused our efforts to observe the variation of the diffraction efficiency during post UV curing process.

  • This research was conducted to reduce the defect rate caused by nozzle clogging of printing heads used in binder jet 3D printers. The binder jet 3D printing technology may adhere to the printing head nozzle by dispersing powder due to mechanical operation such as transferring the printing head and supplying powder, and may cause nozzle clogging by natural curing at the nozzle end depending on the type of binder used. To solve this problem, this study created a cleaning module exclusively for printing heads to check whether the durability of printing heads is improved through analysis of printing results before and after using the cleaning module. To this end, this research used a thermal bubble jet printing head, and the used powder was studied using gypsum powder.

  • The microwave absorption properties of silicone, chloride polyethylene(CPE), and natural lacquer which is newly suggested in this study as a binder for composite microwave absorber were investigated to develop a superior microwave absorber. MnZn ferrite composite microwave absorbers mixed with them were prepared and their absorption property was investigated. A MnZn ferrite microwave absorber mixed with natural lacquer showed an excellent microwave absorption property in expanded frequency band.

We also investigated the effect of photocrosslink in the polymer binder on the diffraction behavior of a new photopolymer. The dynamic behavior of the grating formation was monitored by changing exposure intensity in terms of the diffraction efficiency. Particularly, we focused our efforts in observing the variation of diffraction efficiency during a post UV curing process. The surface topographical change of photopolymer layer before and after Vis/UV light exposure was observed by atomic force microscope (AFM). We inscribed the gratings of the glass diffuser on the surface of the photopolymer and investigated their diffusing properties. The diffusers with photopolymer with the main chain polymer binder showed relatively good viewing angle of around ${\pm}30{\circ}$. Two kinds of photopolymer showed similar uniformity of around 47-54%.

  • Generally, a silicone rubber and a chloride polyethylene(CPE) have been used as a binder for high-performance composite EM( Electromagnetic) wave absorbers. In this study, the EM wave absorption abilities for natural lacquer which is newly suggested as a binder were investigated MnZn ferrite composite EM wave absorbers mixed with the natural lacquer were prepared and their absorption ability was also investigated. The prepared MnZn ferrite composite EM wave absorbers mixed with natural lacquer showed an improved EM wave absorption characteristics compared with MnZn ferrite EM wave absorbers mixed with the conventional binders. such as a silicone rubber and a chloride polyethylene(CPE). The matching frequency and the absorption ability of EM wave absorbers varied with the thickness of them.

Diffraction Behaviors of New Photopolymers and their Diffuser Properties

  • Photopolymers are quite promising candidates for holographic data storage and diffusers because of their high sensitivity and high refractive index modulation. New photopolymers were prepared using the cellulose ester binder bearing different kinds of monomer. The holographic gratings were elaborated successfully in these photopolymer samples by conventional optical interference method. We investigated the dynamic behavior of the diffraction efficiency and the effect of the functionality of the monomer doped into the polymer binder. Triacrylate monomer doped photopolymer showed the highest diffraction efficiency of around 80-90 %, even under low intensity of writing beam (I=2 mW/$cm^2$). We inscribed the gratings of the glass diffuser on the surface of the photopolymer and investigated their diffusion properties.

  • The electrochemical behavior of binder-free carbon anode, comprising of only artificial and natural graphite (AG and NG) particles, for intercalation and deintercalation of lithium ion $(Li^+)$ in aluminum chloride (AICI_3)-I-ethyl­3-methylimidazolium chloride (EMIC)-lithium chloride (LiCl)-thionyl chloride $(SOCI_2)$ room-temperature molten salt (RTMS) was studied. Binder-free carbon electrodes were fabricated using electrophoretic deposition (EPD) method. The binder-free carbon anodes provided a relatively flat charge and discharge potentials $(0\;to\;0.2V\;vs.\;Li/Li^+)$ and current capabilities $(250-340mAh{\cdot}g^{-1})$ for the intercalation and deintercalation of $Li^+$. Stability of the binder-free carbon anodes for intercalation and deintercalation of 50 cycles was confirmed.

  • Past research efforts already established geopolymer as an environment-friendly alternative binder system for ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and recycled aggregate is also one of the promising alternative for natural aggregates. In this study, an effort was made to produce eco-friendly mortar mixes using geopolymer as binder and recycled fine aggregate (RFA) partially and study the resistance ability of these mortar mixes against the aggressive environments. To form the geopolymer binder, 70% fly ash, 30% ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and alkaline solution comprising of sodium silicate solution and 14M sodium hydroxide solution with a ratio of 1.5 were used. The ratio of alkaline liquid to binder (AL/B) was also considered as 0.4 and 0.6. In order to determine the resistance ability against aggressive environmental conditions, acid attack test, sulphate attack test and rapid chloride permeability test were conducted. Change in mass, change in compressive strength of the specimens after the immersion in acid/sulphate solution for a period of 28, 56, 90 and 120 days has been presented and discussed in this study. Results indicated that the incorporation of RFA leads to the reduction in compressive strength. Even though strength reduction was observed, eco-friendly mortar mixes containing geopolymer as binder and RFA as fine aggregate performed better when it was produced with AL/B ratio of 0.6.
