  • This paper aims to investigate the free vibration analysis of FG plates, taking into account the effects of even and uneven porosity. The study employs the Hellinger-Reisner functional and obtains the element's bending stress and membrane stress fields from the analytical solution of the governing equations of the thick plate and plane problem, respectively. The displacement field serves as the second independent field. While few articles on free vibration analysis of circular plates exist, this paper investigates the free vibration of both rectangular and circular plates. After validating the proposed element, the paper investigates the effects of porosity distributions on the natural frequency of the FG porous plate. The study calculates the natural frequency of thin and thick bending plates with different aspect ratios and support conditions for various porosity and volume fraction index values. The study uses three types of porosity distributions, X, V, and O, for the uneven porosity distribution case. For O and V porosity distribution modes, porosity has a minor effect on the natural frequency for both circular and rectangular plates. However, in the case of even porosity distribution or X porosity distribution, the effect of porosity on the natural frequency of circular and rectangular plates increases with an increase in the volume fraction index.

  • The natural frequencies of a long span bridge vary during its construction and it is thus difficult to apply traditional tuned liquid column dampers (TLCD) with a fixed configuration to reduce bridge vibration. The restriction of TLCD imposed by frequency tuning requirement also make it difficult to be applied to structure with either very low or high natural frequency. A semi-active tuned liquid column damper (SATLCD), whose natural frequency can be altered by active control of liquid column pressure, is studied in this paper. The principle of SATLCD with adaptive tuning capacity is first introduced. The analytical models are then developed for lateral vibration of a structure with SATLCD and torsional vibration of a structure with SATLCD, respectively, under either harmonic or white noise excitation. The non-linear damping property of SATLCD is linearized by an equivalent linearization technique. Extensive parametric studies are finally carried out in the frequency domain to find the beneficial parameters by which the maximum vibration reduction can be achieved. The key parameters investigated include the distance from the centre line of SATLCD to the rotational axis of a structure, the ratio of horizontal length to the total length of liquid column, head loss coefficient, and frequency offset ratio. The investigations demonstrate that SATLCD can provide a greater flexibility for its application in practice and achieve a high degree of vibration reduction. The sensitivity of SATLCD to the frequency offset between the damper and structure can be improved by adapting its frequency precisely to the measured structural frequency.

  • With increasing number construction of high-rise building which has about 40 to 60 floors there have been many kinds of problem which related with usage from vibration. To predict response acceleration, it is important to assess correct natural frequency. However, due to the noise of MEMS sensor, it is difficult to measure dynamic characteristic such as natural frequency when measuring ambient vibration using MEMS sensor within cell phone. Therefore, a comparative analysis on vibration measuring applications was performed after measuring ambient vibration of 2 skyscrappers which have height between 133.5~244.3m that are located in Seoul and Observation tower using I-jishin APP with noise reduction function of MEMS sensor in order to verify the effectiveness of low noise type vibration measurement APP.

  • A vibration in the building occurs by influences of the facility equipment and the structural system. As the building recently becomes higher and bigger, the vibration in the floor slab is issued. Specially, the vibration with $4{\sim}8Hz$ frequency is harder to control than any other range of frequency. This vibration easily affects human sensibility and often makes the resonance phenomenon by corresponding with the floor slab's natural frequency when people and heavy equipments move. Moreover, the permission regulations for the vibration of the building are established by building's purposes. However, it is not subdivided in detail and sometimes ambiguous to each client. Even though the vibration could cause negative influences in a research building, there is not the vibration criterion for a research building. Therefore, it is necessary to set up its own vibration criterion with the client before building and to keep checking this vibration criterion under the construction. This study proposes the reasonable control methods and the vibration criterion for floor slab's vibration which are adapted to the R4-project. The R4-project is a research building and a high-rise building also. Accordingly, this study could help to the next similar project in the design and the construction phase.

  • This paper presents the effectiveness of the dynamic vibration absorber consisting of a single mass, coil springs and oil damper on the resonance freauency ratio and amplitude ratio for damped linear systems, that is, primary vibration system with damping. The effects of the dynamic vibration absorber are investigated numerically and experimentally for values of mass ratio, natural frequency ratio, and damping ratio. The experimental results show good agreement with calculated ones. As a result, the characteristics shown by the present work are useful in optimal tuning the dynamic vibration absorber in practice.

  • This case study presents a practical method to reduce resonant vibration of generator-motor set. The generator is driven at 1800rpm by induction integral motor. The vibration is below alarm limits, but the dominant frequency of vibration is sub-synchronous and close to that of bearing fault signal in spite of new bearings. To find an mechanism of abnormal vibration, ODS and Modal analysis is carried out. The measured modal characteristics were compared with those of FE Analysis. The ODS mode at rated speed is consistent with system natural frequency mode that is excited by bearings. To reduce vibration level, the isolation mount at system base is changed with new rubber mount for lower natural frequency.

  • In this paper, vibration characteristics in terms of the airfoil cross-sectional shape was examined by using the EDISON co-rotational plane beam-transient analysis. Assuming aircraft wing as a cantilevered beam with a constant cross-sectional shape, natural frequencies of each airfoil shape was compared while varying airfoil maximum thickness and maximum camber length, using Fast Fourier Transformation(FFT). When the airfoil maximum thickness was varied, natural frequency showed peak value at 18% chord, and decreased afterwards. When the airfoil maximum camber length was varied, natural frequency either increased or decreased at 6% chord, while at 8% the natural frequency showed its maximum. Applying such trends to B-737 wing airfoil, an improved B-737_mod airfoil shape was obtained with regard to the vibration characteristics.

  • An industrial vibratory conveyor system is devised for large-scale feeding by the low-power, using natural frequency of the system. The important thing in this system is to determine the natural frequency and to drive by it. The purpose of this study is to build up reliance on the system with changing of element parameters for vibration characteristics of balancing type vibratory conveyor by using F.E.M. modeling. For investigating the natural frequency, modal testing is performed by using impact hammer, accelerometer and LMS/Vibration Analysis System. Experimental results are compared with F.E.M results. The results of the comparisons within the errors of less than 2 percent can verify the reliability of the F.E.M. analysis of the system. Also we can verify that the characteristics of natural frequency have linearly decreased(-6%) as adding the mass($50{\sim}600kg$). We can find that controlling driving frequency is necessary for triggering the natural frequency, but natural frequency is less affected by adding the mass on the balancing weight.

  • In the present study, according to the important of porosity in low specific weight in comparison of high stiffness of carbon nanotubes reinforced composite, buckling and free vibration analysis of sandwich composite beam in two configurations, of laminates using differential quadrature method (DQM) is studied. Also, the effects of porosity coefficient and three types of porosity distribution on critical buckling load and natural frequency are discussed. It is shown the buckling loads and natural frequencies of laminate 1 are significantly larger than the results of laminate 2. When configuration 2 (the core is made of FRC) and laminate 1 ([0/90/0/45/90]s) are used, the first natural frequency rises noticeably. It is also demonstrated that the influence of the core height in the case of lower carbon volume fractions is negligible. Even though, when volume fraction of fiber increases, the critical buckling load enhances smoothly. It should be noticed the amount of decline has inverse relationship with the beam aspect ratio. Investigating three porosity patterns, beam with the distribution of porosity Type 2 has the maximum critical buckling load and first natural frequency. Among three elastic foundations (constant, linear and parabolic), buckling load and natural frequency in linear variation has the least amount. For all kind of elastic foundations, when the porosity coefficient increases, critical buckling load and natural frequency decline significantly.

  • Recently, mixers are being widely used in the water purification plant in order to increase the filtration efficiency. It has been found that a severe vibration was being felt on a upper structure of a mixer facility during steady state operation. The cause of the excessive vibration of the structure to which the mixer's shaft is supported has been evaluated through modal analysis on the shaft and vibration measurements during operation. The fundamental natural frequency of the mixer's shaft is found to be around 1.8 Hz and the main vibratory frequency around 30 Hz. It has been tuned out that the main vibratory frequency, 30 Hz is coincident with the fundamental holding frequency of the upper structure, and that the acceleration signal of the upper structure and the displacement signal of the mixer's shaft showed highly coherent to each other. Accordingly, it reveals that the main cause of the excessive vibration is due not to the mixer's vibration but to the natural frequency of the upper structure excited by flow turbulence.
