  • Natural organic matter (NOM) is among the most common pollutant in underground and surface waters. It comprises of humic substances which contains anionic macromolecules such as aliphatic and aromatic compounds of a wide range of molecular weights along with carboxylic, phenolic functional groups. Although the concentration of NOM in potable water usually lies in the range of 1-10 ppm. Conventional treatment technologies are facing challenge in removing NOM effectively. The main issues are concentrated to low efficiency, membrane fouling, and harmful by-product formation. Ion-exchangers can be considered as an efficient and economic pretreatment technology for the removal of NOM. It not only consumes less time for pretreatment but also resist formation of trihalomethanes (THMs), an unwanted harmful by-product. This article provides a comprehensive review of ion exchange processes for the removal of NOM.

  • We prepared hybrids between layered double hydroxide (LDH) and natural plant extract such as Peaonia suffruticosa Andrews (PS) and Peaonia Japonica (PJ) which was confirmed anti-bacterial activity through paper disc diffusion assay. According to X-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscope, zeta-potential measurement and quantification of extract loading amount in hybrids, we confirmed that similar amount of PS and PJ loaded on inter-particle pore of LDH with partial adsorption on surface of LDH through reconstruction process. We also evaluated the bacterial colony forming inhibition of PS extract, PJ extract, PS-LDH and PJ-LDH hybrids against Escherichia coli as gram negative bacterium and Bacillus subtilis as gram positive bacterium, suggesting that both hybrids have enhanced anti-bacterial activity compared with extract itself.

  • Two different ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}-\overline{{\nu}{\nu}}-f$ turbulence models together with the two-layer model are evaluated for natural convection in a rectangular cavity. The numerical problem and accuracy of the turbulence models are discussed. The original $\overline{{\nu}{\nu}}-f$ model suffers from the numerical stiffness problem when used with the segregate solution procedure like the SIMPLE algorithm, and a remedy for this problem is proposed. It is shown that original $\overline{{\nu}{\nu}}-f$ model best predicts the mean velocity, Reynolds stresses and the turbulent heat flux while the modified $\overline{{\nu}{\nu}}-f$ model (N=6) overpredicts the turbulent quantities.

  • On account of Indoor Air Quality(IAQ) deterioration by reason of high insulation and air tightness for energy saving, absence of energy efficiency ventilation system development that can be domestic existing window system, the cost increase and the energy addition loss by mechanical ventilation for IAQ improvement, the ventilation obligation making design standard was prepared by a social and technical background and the necessity. In this study, an optimized design and simulation Analysis of natural ventilation window system classified by Apartment type was evaluated by CFD Computational analysis.

  • The CANDU 9 shield cooling system was designed and layout with the objective of promoting natural circulation on loss of forced flow. In the present study, the shield cooling natural circulation was analyzed using verified the thermal-hydraulic code when the coolant pump or the heat exchanger was lost. This study showed that thermosyphoning cooled the end shields and prevented the end shields and the reserve water tank from boiling for at least 8 hours on loss of the shield cooling pumps but the heat exchangers still operational. With the loss of both pumps and heat exchangers, the end shields remain subcooled for up to 4 hours. To enhance thermosyphoning, the bypass connection to the line from the reserve water tank should be relocated to a point as low as possible.

  • Transforming small ultrasonic energy into large mechanical energy is the essential feature of ultrasonic vibration in various application fields. This energy amplification can be obtained by achieving resonance condition between booster or tool horn and transducer. When it has uniform section with small sectional area, one dimensional analysis provides good estimation of the natural frequency of the horn. But, for arbitrary shape of horn, one dimensional analysis can no longer be applied. At present, designing tool horn whose natural frequency is identical to that of transducer requires serveral stages of trial and error in actual manufacturing process. In this paper, frequency analysis program is developed to easily predict the natural frequency of ultrasonic vibration cutting tool with axisymmetry and 3- dimensional shape using finite element method.

  • An efficient wave energy converter with new overtopping flow device on which spiral reefs are attached is proposed by Maritime and Ocean Engineering Research Institute in Korea and its candidate substructures such as monopile, tripod and jacket are designed. This study investigates modal characteristics of the substructures by analyzing natural frequencies and mode shapes. Based on the modal analysis results, relative strength, governing modes and some complementary design strategies of each candidate substructure are compared and discussed considering water depth conditions.

  • Photodissociation dynamics of cyanamide (NH2CN) at 212 nm has been investigated by measuring rotationally resolved laser induced fluorescence spectra of CN fragments exclusively produced in the ground electronic state. From the spectra, rotational population distributions of CN as well as translational energy releases in the products were obtained. The measured average rotational energies of CN were 12.4 ± 0.5 and 11.6 ± 0.5 kJ/ mol for v'' = 0 and v'' = 1, respectively and the center of mass average translational energy release among products was 41.8 ± 6.4 kJ/mol. The observed energy partitioning was well represented by statistical prior calculations, from which it was suggested that the dissociation takes place on the ground electronic surface after rapid internal conversion.

  • The band structures and the densities of states at the Fermi energy for rutile, anatase and brookite phases are investigated along with the structure-photocatlaytic relationship by using DFT method. Bands are less dispersive in anatase phase than in rutile phase, and they are almost flat in brookite phase. As a result, the DOS value near the Fermi energy for brookite is highest among three types of $TiO_{2}$, which means that the numbers of electrons near the Fermi energy are largest in brookite. The calculation shows that brookite phase may exhibit highest photocatalytic efficiency among three types of $TiO_{2}$.

  • Cooling the building by natural ventilation is one of the passive methods widely used from ancient times. It can be effectively applied especially in case of cooling load during the intermediate season of the year. In this study, the effect of 4 cases of window ventilation control mode which are 'Always Close', 'Temperature', 'Enthalpy' and 'Always Open' is simulated by Energyplus program and analyzed to improve the comfort of occupants and reduce energy consumption of the school classroom.
