Temporary Dominance of Exotic Plant Species on Overburden Coal Mines in South Kalimantan

  • Primary succession on bare rocks is a challenge for invaders, including one of which was plants. The invasion of bare rock by exotic species raises the question of whether their presence hinders or facilitates succession. This study aimed to determine the role of exotic species in primary succession in six overburden (OB) coal mines using a chronosequence approach. Vegetation analysis was undertaken using line transects. Measurements were carried out on the absolute and relative coverage of each species. Native and exotic species were identified and grouped using information from local communities, identification books, and websites. The relationship between time and number of species, time, and relative dominance of exotic and native species was analyzed using Pearson's correlation. Species number and dominance data were analyzed descriptively. The number of native species from the six OB heaps was higher (57) than that from exotic heaps (50). Neither the number of species nor the coverage showed a significant relationship with time. Exotic species predominated throughout the age of the embankment but tended to decrease over time. Temporary dominance by exotic species plays a role in assisting primary succession in the OB. This process might be prolonged without the temporary dominance of exotic species during early primary succession.

Distribution and Characteristics of Native and Exotic Plants on Cut Slopes and Rest Areas along Korean Highway Lines

  • Vegetation surveys were performed at 45 plots along 10 highways cut slopes in South Korea. Total floral inventory, species richness and exotic plant percentage were obtained within each plot. Life history and life form of each species appeared were analyzed. Community types were classified using hierarchical cluster analysis and detrended correspondence analysis and non-metric multidimensional scaling were conducted from vegetation matrix. 292 species of vascular plants were discovered and the number of natives and exotics were 226 and 66, respectively. There were no significant differences of species richness and exotic plant percentage between cut slopes and rest areas. Hierarchical cluster analysis indicated five clear vegetation associations in cut slopes and rest areas. Detrended correspondence analysis indicated that species composition of total and native plants were similar along the highway cut slopes whereas exotic plants were distributed differentially along the highway cut slopes. in non-metric multidimensional scaling, the studied sites were more separated from each other on the basis of their species composition than the results of detrended correspondence analysis with respect to total, native and exotic plants. The both ordination represented that exotic plants have not been made uniform yet on cut slopes and rest areas by highway corridor in spite of diverse chronosequences after highway construction termination (1 to 22 years). This study showed that the distribution of species composition in exotic plants was different and localized on cut slopes and rest areas of highway in this representative peninsula area of North East Asia and the invasion of exotic plants can retard the process of plant species homogenization.

사면 녹화용 외래초종과 재래 목·초본식물의 적정 파종량 및 혼파비에 관한 연구(II) (Optimal Amount and Mixture Ratio of Seeding of the Exotic and Native Plants for Slope Revegetation(II))

  • This study was carried out to verify results of the nursery seedbeds. From November of 1997 to September of 1998, the artificial banking slopes in the greenhouse of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Seoul National University were seeded with the mixtures of those species. Most of exotic species showed relatively poor development of root as short as 30cm. Also the green weight of root biomass of the native species was more than two times than that of the exotic species. On the other hand, it was found that the exotic species have relatively well-developed fine roots. Thus, it was concluded that the seed-mixture of the native species with long and thick roots and the exotic species with fine roots be the most effective method for topsoil erosion control on banking-slopes. The artificial rainfall system treatment(30mm/hr, 60mm/hr, 100mm/hr) on $30^{\circ}$ banking-slopes did not cause any significant change in the amount of soil loss by erosion. The root system was best developed in the plot of 1,000 seedlings per square meter and it performed well for soil erosion control. Consequently, in the case of seeding of single herbaceous species without mixing any woody seeds, the expected seedlings were 1,000 to 2,000 per square meter.

Exotic Mahogany Leaf Litter Hinders Growth of Philippine Native Tree Seedlings

  • With continuous decline of Philippine forest cover, sustainable forest management and restoration are essential to restore destroyed forest ecosystems. Unfortunately, of ten most planted trees in reforestation projects in the Philippines, eight are exotic species, with large leaf mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) being the most dominant. In this study, effect of Swietenia macrophylla in reforestation projects on native tree species was evaluated. Effects of S. macrophylla leaf litter, frequency, and canopy closure on the growth of the Philippine native species Pterocarpus indicus were investigated. Results showed that S. macrophylla leaf litter significantly inhibited the growth of P. indicus seedlings based on root collar-to-shoot height. The standardized growth rate of seedlings in plots without S. macrophylla leaf litter was significantly higher than the growth rate of seedlings in plots with leaf litter. Furthermore, there was no significant difference in the standardized growth rate of seedlings between plots without leaf litter and a control plot. On the contrary, S. macrophylla tree frequency and canopy closure showed no significant effect. These results attest to the negative effect of widely planted S. macrophylla to a valuable Philippine native tree P. indicus. With accumulating scientific evidence about negative effects of S. macrophylla on native trees, discontinued use in tree planting and reforestation efforts with active management of restoration sites previously planted with large leaf mahogany are needed.

Potential risky exotic fish species, their ecological impacts and potential reasons for invasion in Korean aquatic ecosystems

  • Background: Due to the rapidly changing climatic conditions, South Korea faces the grand challenge of exotic species. With the increasing human movement, the influx of alien species to novel regions is prevalent across the globe. The latest research suggests that it is easy to prevent the introduction and establishment of alien species rather than controlling their spread and eradication. Like other countries, the Korean Ministry of Environment released a list (in 2018) of 45 potential risky exotic fish species considered likely to be invasive candidate fish species if they ever succeed in entering the Korean aquatic ecosystems. Results: The investigation into the invasion suitability traits showed that potential risky fish species could utilize those features in becoming invasive once they arrive in the Korean aquatic ecosystems. If the novel species establish viable populations, they are likely to incur higher economic costs, damage the native aquatic fauna and flora, and jeopardize the already perilled species. Furthermore, they can damage the installed infrastructure, decline overall abundance and biodiversity, and disturb the ecosystem services. Here we reviewed the list of fish species concerning their family, native origin, preferred aquatic biomes, main food items, current status in Korea, and potential threats to humans and the ecosystems. Data shows that most species are either already designated as invasive in the neighboring counties, including Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, and China, or originate from these countries. Such species have a higher climate match with the Korean territories. Conclusions: Therefore, it is exceptionally essential to study their most critical features and take regulatory measures to restrict their entry. The incoming fish species must be screened before letting them in the country in the future. The regulatory authorities must highlight the threatening traits of such species and strictly monitor their entrance. Detailed research is required to explore the other species, especially targeting the neighboring countries fish biodiversity, having demonstrated invasive features and matching the Korean climate.

조경수목 가격의 10년간(1985-1994) 변화에 관한 연구 (A study on the prices trends of landscape woody plants(1985-1994) in Korea)

  • This study was conduced out to analyze the price trends of landscape woody plants during the past ten years. The method of this study was applied to secendary data analysis and the data were collected from "Government Specified Monthly Price Book" and "Monthly Price Book" The results of this study were as follows : 1. The annual average increasing rate of the GSP price was 3.9% while the KPRC price was 8.9% for the past ten years. The ratio of the KPRC price by GSP price was 94.7% in 1985 and it increased by 147.3% in 1994. This increase indicates a large price margin between two prices. The GSP price should be readjusted to a realistic level. 2. For the same period, the prices of native Korean tree were raised by 3.8% and 9.5% in annual average rate. Meanwhile, the exotic tree prices were raised by 3.6% for and 7.8% for in annual average rate. The prices of native Korean tree were raised more than those the exotic tree. 3. The annual average increasing rates of the twenty for species prices which were high ranked among all species prices were 12% for and 21.5% for . These top twenty species drove to markup trend of tree prices. 4. The annual average price increasing rate of major species which are used frequently for landscaping was higher than total increasing rate of all species. This result shows that the prices of the major species markup more than others. 5. From 1985 to 1994, the prices of 29 new species were listed on "The government specified monthly price book" and the prices of 40 species were newly listed on "Monthly price book". On the contrary, 3 species from "The government specified Monthly Book" and 10 species from "Monthly Price Book" were eliminated. The number of new listed on the native Korean species were twice as many as the exotic species. In addition, there is a need to study and explain reaon of the elimination.

도시의 벽면녹화를 위한 벽면식생 조사연구 -서울시를 중심으로- (A Study on the Wall Plants for the Improvement of the Urban Environment -With Special References to Seoul-)

  • This study was surveyed the vegetation on the 2∼3 walls at 22 districts in Seoul to get basic data for wall planting in urban environment. The results were as follows: 1. 45 families, 90 genera and 113 species were grown on the walls in Seoul and woody wall plants were 30 species(26.5%) and herbaceous plants were 83 species(73.5%). 2. Of 30 woody species, evergreen species were 7(23.3%) and deciduous species were 23(76.7%). 3. Of 83 herbaceous species, annuals were 43(51.8%), biennials 12(14.5%), and perennials 28(33.7%). 4. Climbing wall plants were 28 species(24.8%). 5. 35 species(31.0%) were planted artificially and 78 species(69.0%) were self-grown plants. 6. Of 138 planted walls, 46 walls were covered with Parthenocissus tricuspidata(33.3%), 11 walls Forsythia koreana(8.0%), 9 walls Pharbitis nil(6.5%), 9 walls Wisteria floribunda(6.5%), and 8 walls Rosa multiflora var. platyphlla(5.8%). 7. In the comparison of native and exotic plants on the walls in Seoul, native species were 84(74.3%) and exotic were 29(25.7%).

Exotic Seeds on the Feathers of Migratory Birds on a Stopover Island in Korea

  • Migratory birds, by crossing significant ecological barriers, carry and may subsequently introduce exotic seeds into new ecological zones during period of migration. The study of epizoochory, which includes seed dispersal by adhesion to bird feathers, has been relatively neglected compared to the study of seed dispersal by frugivores. To determine whether exotic seeds are being imported to stopover islands by migrating birds, and to estimate the quantity of seeds of exotic species being introduced, we examined migratory birds that were captured in mist nets for attached exotic plant diaspores in 2008 and 2009 on Hongdo Island, Korea. From a total of 3,947 birds examined, we found exotic seeds of Japanese Chaff Flowers (Achyranthes japonica) attached to three species of migratory birds (0.08%; Eurasian Bittern Botaurus stellaris, Swinhoe's Rail Coturnicops exquisitus and Oriental Turtle Dove Streptopelia orientalis). Despite the low occurrence of A. japonica seeds on the external parts of birds, the results suggest that migratory birds may be potential dispersing agents for A. japonica, a species that is currently threatening native ecosystems on many islands in Korea.

강원도 지역의 조경식물의 식재현황 분석 (Analysis of Landscape Planting in Gangwon-do)

  • 강원도내 초 중 고 총 632개교의 교화와 교목을 조사한 결과, 교목의 종수는 45종이었으며, 이 중 자생종이 35종이고, 외래종이 10종이었다. 영서지방에서 가장 많이 이용되고 있는 교목은 향나무, 잣나무, 소나무, 전나무, 은행나무, 느티나무, 주목 순이었다. 영동지방에서도 향나무, 소나무, 전나무, 주목, 은행나무, 해송의 순이었다. 교화는 총 43종이었으며, 이 중 자생종이 22종이고, 외래종이 21 종이었다. 영서지방에서 많이 지정하고 있는 교화는 장미, 개나리, 철쭉, 목련, 진달래의 순이었으며, 영동지역에서는 개나리, 장미, 목련, 백일홍, 철쭉, 국화, 해당화의 순이었다. 강원도 시 군에서 지정한 꽃과 나무는 총 19종으로 꽃은 12종이고, 나무는 7종이었다. 종별로는 은행나무가 7개 시 군에서, 도화인 철쭉이 5개 시 군에서, 도목인 잣나무가 5개 시 군에서, 주목은 3개 시 군에서 지정되었고, 개나리, 함박꽃나무, 살구나무 등이 각각 2개 시 군에서 지정되었다. 강원도 영서지역에 식재된 수목은 87종에 약 619,835주였으며, 많은 시 군에서 선호하는 수종으로는 소나무, 왕벚나무, 산벚나무, 산수유, 돌배나무, 산철쭉, 단풍나무, 잣나무, 주목, 무궁화, 개나리, 느티나무, 복자기 등이었다. 단일종으로 가장 많이 심겨진 수종은 개나리, 무궁화, 산철쭉, 자작나무, 자산홍, 쥐똥나무 등의 순이었다. 전체 87종 중에서 자생종이 56종이고, 외래종이 31종이었다. 영동지방에 심겨진 목본류는 총 77종에 914,668주였으며, 이 중 52종이 자생종이고, 외래종이 25종이었다. 시 군에서 선호하는 주요 수종은 곰솔, 영산홍, 철쭉, 무궁화, 왕벚나무, 소나무, 수수꽃다리, 산철쭉, 해당화, 산벚나무, 장미, 향나무, 사철나무, 개나리, 이팝나무, 단풍나무, 모과나무 등이었다. 단일종으로 가장 많이 심겨진 수종으로는 해당화, 무궁화, 영산홍, 개나리, 산철쭉, 벚나무, 사철나무 등의 순이었다.

수 종의 한국자생식물과 귀화식물 추출액이 토양미생물에 미치는 항균활성 (Antimicrobial Activities of Extracts from Several Native and Exotic Plants in Korea)

  • 수 종의 한국자생식물과 귀화식물의 서식지 토양 pH를 측정한 결과 자생식물의 토양 pH범위는 5.33∼7.20인 반면 귀화식물의 토양 pH는 3.95∼6.10으로 자생종에 비하여 귀화종의 토양 pH가 낮았다. 자생식물과 귀화식물의 에탄올 추출액이 토양미생물인 Bacillus sphiaericus 2362, Bacillus thuringiensis var. subtilis, Bacillus thuringiensis var. cereus, Actinomycetes에 미치는 항균활성 은 자생식물보다 귀화식물이 전반적으로 활성이 높게 나타났다. 돼지풀의 추출액은 4개의 균주 모두에서 항균활성이 크게 나타났고 특히 방선균에서 clear zone 이 48mm로 가장 크게 형성되었다. 8종류의 phenolic compound와 benzoic acid의 항균활성은 caffeic acid가 각 균주 에서 clear zone을 가장 크게 형성하였고 다음은 benzoic acid, ρ-coumaric acid의 순이였다. 즉 방선균에 대한 돼지풀의 항균활성은 phenolic compound들 간의 상승효과에 의하여 형성된 것임을 알 수 있었다.
