  • Uniformity and leveled distributions of soil chemicals across paddy fields are critical to manage optimal crop yields, reduce environmental risks and efficiently use water in rice cultivation. In this study, an investigation of spatial distributions on soil chemical properties was conducted to evaluate the effect of land leveling on mitigation of soil chemical property heterogeneity from a remodeled paddy field. The spatial variabilities of chemical properties were analyzed by geostatistical analyses; semivariograms and kriged simulations. The soil samples were taken from a 1 ha paddy field before and after land leveling with sufficient water. The study site was located at Bon-ri site of Dalseong and river sediments were dredged from Nakdong river basins. The sediments were buried into the paddy field after 50 cm of top soils at the paddy field were removed. The top soils were recovered after the sediments were piled up. In order to obtain the most accurate spatial field information, the soil samples were taken at every 5 m by 5 m grid point and total number of samples was 100 before and after land leveling with sufficient water. Soil pH increased from 6.59 to 6.85. Geostatistical analyses showed that chemical distributions had a high spatial dependence within a paddy field. The parameters of semivariogram analysis showed similar trends across the properties except pH comparing results from before and after land leveling. These properties had smaller "sill" values and greater "range" values after land leveling than ones from before land leveling. These results can be interpreted as land leveling induced more homogeneous distributions of soil chemical properties. The homogeneous distributions were confirmed by kriged simulations and distribution maps. As a conclusion, land leveling with sufficient water may induce better managements of fertilizer and water use in rice cultivation at disturbed paddy fields.

  • Background: Studies of the prognostic role of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are still limited. This study investigated the prognostic power of CTCs from the pulmonary vein (PV), peripheral blood (PB), and bone marrow (BM) for postoperative recurrence in patients who underwent curative resection for NSCLC. Methods: Forty patients who underwent curative resection for NSCLC were enrolled. Before resection, 10-mL samples were obtained of PB from the radial artery, blood from the PV of the lobe containing the tumor, and BM aspirates from the rib. A microfabricated filter was used for CTC enrichment, and immunofluorescence staining was used to identify CTCs. Results: The pathologic stage was stage I in 8 patients (20%), II in 15 (38%), III in 14 (35%), and IV in 3 (8%). The median number of PB-, PV-, and BM-CTCs was 4, 4, and 5, respectively. A time-dependent receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that PB-CTCs had excellent predictive value for recurrence-free survival (RFS), with the highest area under the curve at each time point (first, second, and third quartiles of RFS). In a multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression model, PB-CTCs were an independent risk factor for recurrence (hazard ratio, 10.580; 95% confidence interval, 1.637-68.388; p<0.013). Conclusion: The presence of ≥4 PB-CTCs was an independent poor prognostic factor for RFS, and PV-CTCs and PB-CTCs had a positive linear correlation in patients with recurrence.

  • Most outlet fires occur around plug pins and plug pin receivers. However, no research has been conducted on ignitions at power connection points. This study confirms the possibility of ignition after incomplete connection, using a stranded wire, to the power connection point of an outlet. The experiment was divided into basic and reproducing experiments. The basic experiment confirmed the possibility of ignition according to the number of wire strands connected to the power connection point, and it identified the characteristics of the residue after the fire. In the reproducing experiment, lamps, vacuum cleaners, and heaters were connected to an outlet to check if the ignition at the connection advanced into a fire. The fire advanced due to the heat and arc generated at the connection point, and partial losses were identified in the U-type holder and clip. Accordingly, the results demonstrate that a fire may occur when the stranded wire is incompletely connected to the outlet. Moreover, it was confirmed that the cause of a fire can be determined based on the characteristics of the residue.

  • This study was carried out to compare stand structure and dynamics in Abies koreana forest in Yeongsil area of Mt. Hallasan between 2011 and 2017 by analysing DBH distribution, tree vitality, importance value (IV) and species diversity through the national long-term ecological research project conducted by National Institute of Environmental Research. As a result of DBH distribution, A. koreana decreased in all DBH class except 20-25 cm and the number of individual decreased by 16.3 percent from 780 to 655. As a result of tree vitality of A. koreana, the number of standing alive (AS) decreased by 16.2 percent from 652 to 546, while that of standing dead (DS) increased by 15.8 percent from 106 to 126 and that of fallen dead (DF) increased by 193.7 percent from 16 to 47, respectively. Importance value of A. koreana decreased by 2.4 percent point from 45.9 % to 43.5 %. Species diversity increased by 0.006 from 0.513 to 0.519. The weakening of the A. koreana in the Yeongsil area of Mt. Hallasan could be considerably supported by many aspects such as DBH distribution, tree vitality and importance value. Therefore, Long-term ecological monitoring and continuously research in that area should be conducted to clarify the effects of ecosystem changes.

  • This study describes the accuracies of position fixes observed by the DGPS systems for the purpose of obtaining the utility basic data in the fishery and oceanography observation field. The circling sail experiments around a reterence point using the DGPS were made in water level point of National Fisheries University of Pusan and on the sea in Yongho day located on the southeast of that university. The main results are as follows ; 1) The number of the usable satellites in position fixing were all eighteen, SV 2, 3, 11-21, 23-26 and SV 28 etc. Each satellites could be observed for average seven hours a day, and position fixing was found to be always possible except about thirty minutes a day. 2) In the standard fixed position, the radius of 95% probability circle and the shifted distance between the position fixes by the DGPS and true position were respectively 5.7m, 0.9m. In the above case those of ordinary GPS was respectively 48.8, 54.2m. Therefore, the accuracy of the position fixes by DGPS was shown much higher the ordinary GPS. 3) At land, the shifted distance between the center of traces in the circling sail experiment of 15m ra-dius by DGPS and the reference position amounted to 5.5m and observed radius of circling traces was 17.5m. other than 15m. At sea, that distance the center of traces in circling experiment of 20m radius by the DGPS and the reference position amounted to 3.6m and observed radius of circling traces was 19.7m, other than 20m. Therefore, the utility of the circling experiment to obtain the accurate position fixes by the DGPS was found to be very high.

  • This study examined the differences in the improvement of walking ability between treadmill training with fast-tempo auditory stimulation (FTAS group) and the general treadmill training (control group) in hemiplegia. The subjects were allocated randomly into both groups. Eleven patients of the FTAS group and 11 patients of the control group underwent training for 30 minutes per day for 6 weeks. Before and after intervention, the walking ability was measured by the 10m gait-evaluation and the number of steps in 20m walking. The gait velocity was improved further in the FTAS group than the control group (p<.05). This study provides evidence of the efficacy of treadmill training with FTAS in improving the gait ability when compared to the general methods in patients with chronic hemiplegia.

  • This paper evaluates the equalization algorithm of FC-MMA (Fast Convergence-Multi Modulus Algorithm) and RMMA (Region based Multi Modulus Algorithm) for the compensation of intersymbol interference which is due to the distortion of communication channel. In order to obtain the error signal for adaptive equalization, the FC-MMA use the modified dispersion constant considering the number of signal symbol, the RMMA separates the 4 region which every symbol points are located, then reduce the symbol point based on this region into constant modulus symbol point. By applying the different principle in order to get the error signal for the updating the tap coefficient of adaptive equalizer, it has the different equalization performance by these error signal. The computer simulation was performed in order to compare the different equalization performance in this paper. The performance index includes the output signal constellation, the residual isi and maximum distortion that is for the convergence characteristics, the SER. As a result of computer simulation, RMMA has more good performance in the residual isi, maximum distortion after in steady state and SER performance than FC-MMA, but not in convergence speed to reach the steady state.

  • This study reviews studies that used skin temperature in order to establish an emotion evaluation protocol based on skin temperature for home appliances. A survey of skin temperature evaluation papers was conducted by the following five stages: (1) keyword search, (2) title screening, (3) abstract screening, (4) full paper screening, and (5) relevance evaluation. Selected papers were reviewed for: purpose, recruitment criteria of participants, the number of participants, apparatus, procedure, measures, analysis methods, and major findings. Thermistor sensors and thermography are used for the measurement of skin temperature. Skin temperature sensors are attached to 4 - 10 locations on the body and their mean of skin temperature is calculated by Ramanatan's 4-point or Hardy & Dubois's 7-point method. Semantic differential (SD) method and thermography measuring facial surface temperature have been used for emotion evaluation. The SD method provides a set of adjective pairs related to a product and evaluates changes in emotion from the use of the product. The range of facial surface analyzed is defined in the thermal image and temperature changes before and after the evaluation are analyzed. The evaluation items of home appliances include form, color, material, aesthetics, satisfaction, novelty, convenience, pleasantness, and excellence. Many existing emotion studies using skin temperature do not apply physiological and psychological methods. This study provides basic data to establish a skin temperature and emotion evaluation protocol by examining literature for skin temperature and evaluation of sensitivity.

  • Recently, 3D-reconstruction for geographic information and study of geospatial information is progressing in various fields through national policy such as R&D business and pilot project. LiDAR system has a advantage of acquisition the 3D information data easily and densely so that is used in many different fields. Considering to characterist of the point data formed with 3D, it need a high specification CPU because it requires a number of processing operation for 2D form expressed by monitor. In contrast, 2D grid structure, like DEM, has a advantage on costs because of simple structure and processing speed. Therefore, purpose of this study is to solve the problem of requirement of more storage space, when LiDAR data stored in forms of 3D is used for 3D-geographic and 3D-buliding representation. Additionally, This study reconstitutes 2D-gird data to supply the representation data of 3D-geographic and presents the storage method which is available for detailed representation applying tree-structure and reduces the storage space.

  • This work studies the reliability analysis of a slope that considers multiple failure modes. The analysis consists of two parts. First, significant failure modes that contribute most to system reliability are determined. The so-called barrier method proposed by Der Kiureghian and Dakessian to identify significant failure modes successively is employed. Second, the failure probability for the slope is estimated on the basis of the identified significant failure modes and corresponding design points. For reliability problems entailing multiple design points, failure probability can be estimated by the multi-point first-order reliability method (FORM), Ditlevsen's bounds method, and Monte Carlo simulation. In this paper, a comparative study between these methods has been made through example problems. Analysis results showed that while a soil slope may have a large number of potential slip surfaces, its system failure probability is usually governed by a few significant slip surfaces. Therefore, the most important step in the system reliability analysis for a soil slope is to identify all the significant failure modes in an efficient way.
