  • This paper introduces a conservation treatment for silver diadem ornaments with flower design and the types of corrosive chemical compounds. Twelve silver diadem ornaments with flower design from the Baekje period excavated thus far have been classified into four types. This classification is made more specific in this paper. Each of the silver diadem ornaments was compared with one another. The comparison showed that the same production technique had been used for all of them, but they differed in size and thickness. This suggests that only a few pieces were produced whenever needed, rather than many pieces being produced at the same time.

  • Analysis of Flat board-shaped Lacquer ware excavated from Daho-ri was conducted. The result of species identification is identifed as Pinus spp. As a result of microscopic observation, lacquer fragment is consist of 5 layers and its thickness is about 100 ㎛. Infrared spectroscopy of the lacquer ware revealed that they had a very similar absorption band as refined lacquer, confirming that they were painted with lacquer. Result of Analysis for Circular metal ornament is alloy smelted by tin and lead. It is called Pewter. While The species of wooden objects investigated until now is broad-leaved tree; the species of flat board-shaped lacquer ware is conifer.

  • The Conservation Science Team at National Museum of Korea has Reproduced the silk wrapper that was used the sarira reliquary found from Pagoda in the Bonginsa, in order to use it in the process of alternating the relics on display in the Hangeul(the Korean language) of the Historical Gallery. Silk fabric of the same texture as the original was used for reproduction. As for the process of dyeing silk fabric, fermented Indigo deposits was used for bluish color, while fruits of the alder trees were used to express the parts that have been faded into yellowish. The Korean characters(court style hangeul) written on the wrapper have been replicated through the use of Ink-stick.

  • For exhibition, conducted conservation treatment for a variety of collections acquired at home and abroad such as metallic objects, wooden-ware, paintings and lacquer-ware. Conservation treatment methods for 42 metallic objects were introduced for material types. X-ray and microscopic method were used to identify the current state of the collections and in some case if necessary, various foreign particle removing and stabilization method were used depending on material type. Historical data were stored and exhibited to public.

  • This study examined characteristics and structure of earthen Janggu that were excavated from Jeollabuk-do and other regions, and it described conservation process of earthen Janggu that were excavated from Samsanyujeok Jeonju. Earthen Janggu that were excavated from Samsanyujeok were destroyed and lost by more than one third, and they were thought to make use of them at living lives. We take an x-ray of center of the Janggu for inspect production technique and, destroyed area of the Janggu was recovered by making recovery frame made by plaster and using epoxy series CDK-520. After recovery, acrylic paint was used to do color matching and to get rid of sense of difference of the area that was recovered and remained.

  • The copper incense burner inlaid with gold and silver and purchased by the National Museum of Korea in 2002 was to be corroded severely throughout the surface. It was difficult to recognize the part with silver inlaying. Using the abrasive method with alumina, however, its splendid inlaying patterns were restored. Prior to applying the abrasive method, the quality was examined, and a material that could help bring out the patterns without causing too much damage to the artifact, selected. The overall condition of the incense burner was also checked through X-ray equipment to know the condition of the gold and silver inlaying, and by x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy to confirm the composition of the incense burner and gold and silver inlaying. The result of this process is expected to serve as valuable data in future research on incense burners inlaid with gold and silver.

  • The National Museum of Korea has a collection of various materials. In particular, items made from organic materials such as wood, paper, and leather are vulnerable to the influence of insects and germs, requiring fumigation as well as pesticides and bactericides. The influence of pesticides and bactericides on the change in dyed paper was examined by applying the oddy test used to confirm the toxicity of various materials used in museums. Results revealed that the products of B and H companies had the least influence on the change in dyed paper. On the other hand, the result of the examination of cochineal and curcuma dyed paper revealed a significant change in the control group compared to the one exposed together with dyed paper, probably because of humidity rather than the sample.

  • Among many artifacts donated by Yoo Chang-jong, we duplicated and performed conservation treatment for a colored brick(J3432), a roof tile with monster-mask design(J1886) and a mould for roof tiles with monster-mask design(J1882). We focused on the restoration of the paint layer for the colored brick. As for the roof tile with monster-mask design, we cleared the existing poorly repaired part and then performed a complete conservation treatment. We would like to present the process to duplicate a roof tile with monster-mask design using a real mould, for the special exhibition entitled "Donated Tiles of Yoo Chang-jong".

  • In this paper, key features of an excavated submarine article and general process of its conservation will be introduced. First, the conservation process of removing salt from an excavated submarine article was done by desalting stage, and the X-Ray photographing was done for its inner and outer damage detection. The process of making a restoration mold with the beeswax for the broken part, making restoration material with fillers and grinded broken pieces of earthen ware have similar color and quality, and color matching distinguishable for the naked eye after the whole conservation process have been finished.
