  • Radio pulsars are highly magnetized, rapidly rotating neutron stars that emit synchrotron radiation along the magnetic axes at their spin frequencies. Traditionally, pulsar observations have been done at low frequencies (MHz up to a few GHz), since radio pulsar spectrum is known to a power-law with a steep negative spectral index. More recently, high-frequency pulsar observations (several GHz and above) have been made as a broadband spectrometer and fast computers became available. High-frequency pulsar observations will provide information on radio emission mechanism of pulsars in the vicinity of the neutron star surface. There is also huge interest from gravitational-wave and astrophysics community to find a pulsar in the center of our Galaxy. The Korean VLBI Network has three 21-m single dishes in the Korean peninsula. Using KVN's lowest observational frequency of 22-GHz, we performed test observations with the KVN targeting a few selected known, bright pulsars. In addition, we have been developing pulsar pipelines that can be utilized with a VLBI facility using Mark-V. We present a brief introduction of radio pulsars and show data obtained with the KVN.

  • Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) is the first optical survey system of its kind in a way that three KMTNet observatories are longitudinally well-separated, and thus have the benefit of 24-hour continuous monitoring of the southern sky. The wide-field and round-the-clock operation capabilities of this network facility are ideal for survey and the physical characterization of small Solar System bodies. We obtain their orbits, absolute magnitudes (H), three dimensional shape models, spin periods and spin states, activity levels based on the time-series broadband photometry. Their approximate surface mineralogy is also identified using colors and band slopes. The automated observation scheduler, the data pipeline, the dedicated computing facility, related research activity and the team members are collectively called 'DEEP-South' (DEep Ecliptic Patrol of Southern sky). DEEP-South observation is being made during the off-season for exoplanet search, yet part of the telescope time is shared in the period between when the Galactic bulge rises early in the morning and sets early in the evening. We present here the observation mode, strategy, software, test runs, early results, and the future plan of DEEP-South.

  • As the demand for broadband multimedia including the Internet explosively increases, the advancement of the subscriber network is becoming the biggest issue in the telecommunication industry due to the surge of data traffic caused by the emergence of new services such as smart phone, IPTV, VoIP, VOD and cloud services. In this paper, we have developed WDM(Wavelength Division Multiplexing)-PON(passive optical network) based on the 1-Gigabit Reach Externder (RE) technique to reduce optical core. Particularly, in order to strengthen the market competitiveness, we considered low cost, miniaturization, integration technique, and low power of optical parts. In addition, we have developed a batch system by integrating all techniques for reliability, remote management through the development of transmission distance extension and development of capacity increase of optical line by using RE technology in existing PON network. Based on system interworking with existing commercial 1G PON devices, it can be worthy of achievement of wide nationalization and optical core reduction by using this developed system. Based on these results, we are studying development of 10G PON technology.

  • A low-cost, high-performance 40 Gb/s clock recovery module using a phase-locked loop(PLL) for a 40 Gb/s optical receiver with the clock-hold function has been designed and implemented. It consists of a clock extractor circuit, an RF mixer and a frequency discriminator for phase/frequency detection, a VC-DRO, a phase shifter, and a clock-hold circuit. The extracted 40 GHz clock is synchronized with a stable 10 GHz VC-DRO. The clock stability and jitter characteristics of the implemented PLL-based clock recovery module are significantly improved as compared with those of the conventional open-loop type clock recovery module with a DR filter. The measured peak-to-peak RMS jitter is about 230 fs. When an input signal is dropped, the 40 GHz clock is maintained continuously by the hold circuit.

  • The international society under the internet technology have been declining boundaries of the global economy. After this step, a social revolution will be happen from the ubiquitous technology which fives objects intelligence to serve people. And then it is expected that every part of a city competitive power is defined by both in qualify and in quantify of the ubiquitous information unit in the future. On this score, now each nation is trying to set relative services and broadband networks to lead the ubiquitous industry. Therefore this paper analyzed about the progress and prospect of a local U-city plan in our nation Especially we propose a new city development model which use U-city and self-communication network to Improve a city competitive power.

  • Today, as various access technologies appear, for example WiMax, WiBro, the demand for spectrum is increasing rapidly. Spectrums are a national resource with scarcity value so that we need to a]locate them effectively for the national economy and industry. Accordingly, In the paper, we proposed several factors and new model for estimating spectrum requirements of a next generation mobile network with multimedia data services. These are self-similarity characteristics of data traffic, engineered capacity considering QoS, structure of FA increase, asymmetry of data traffic between uplink and downlink, handoff traffic, and uneven traffic pattern among base stations. It can applied mobile WiMax or other wireless broadband systems in general.

  • As the performance of the next-generation broadband wireless networks is dramatically enhanced, various services (i.e., education, Live video streaming, Live video conferencing, online games, etc.) have been provided to users through a smart mobile platform. Those services are usually provided by using the centralized communication server. However, since all multimedia traffic is exchanged through a communication server, it often has the scalability problem with regard to traffic management. Our main purpose is for group smart users to provide scalable live multimedia streaming service based on P2P network. To do this, we have designed an architecture of P2P-based service management for mobile group communication management and service management protocol. In order to verify the performance of the proposed scheme, we have mathematically analyzed the performance in terms of the average transmission delay and bandwid th utilization.

  • In this paper, we propose active queue management mechanism (Active-WRED) to guarantee quality of the high priority service class in multi-class traffic service environment. In congestion situation, this mechanism increases drop probability of low priority traffic and reduces the drop probability of the high priority traffic, therefore it can improve the quality of the high priority service. In order to analyze the performance of our mechanism we introduce the stochastic analysis of a discrete-time queueing systems for the performance evaluation of the Active Queue Management (AQM) based congestion control mechanism called Weighted Random Early Detection (WRED) using a two-state Markov-Modulated Bernoulli arrival process (MMBP-2) as the traffic source. A two-dimensional discrete-time Harkov chain is introduced to model the Active-WRED mechanism for two traffic classes (Guaranteed Service and Best Effort Service) where each dimension corresponds to a traffic class with its own parameters.

  • We analyze the demand and supply in contents for platform differentiation in this paper. The contents provided by new platforms such DMB, IPTV which are introduced by the digital techniques and broadband network are almost same, so it is definitely necessary to differentiate the broadcasting contents for the development of telecommunication industry. To forecast the contents demand needed for each media, we assume 3 scenarios such as maximum, medium and minimum demand for contents considering deregulation of media policy. Also, we include the expected number of channels according to the changeover of policies as a variable for scenario. To predict the supply of contents of each media, we analyze 3 scenarios according to operating rates of production facilities as 100%, 70%, 50% and first-run ratio/rerun ratio of both terrestrial broadcastings and major program providers. The result shows that in case of scenario A, new contents for 453,484 hours are required every year and maximum contents that can be produced in present production facilities are just for 72,852 hours even in condition of 100% operating rate. This means that the unbalance of demand and supply of contents is extremely big and implies that the policies of focusing only on the development of platform and network industry are inadequate. It is time to foster contents business for differentiation of multiplatforms.
