  • Lamb waves have been a promising candidate for quantitative damage identification for various engineering structures, taking advantage of their superb capabilities of traveling for long distances with fast propagation and low attenuation. However, the application of Lamb waves in damage identification so far has been hampered by the fact that the characteristic signals associated with defects are generally weaker compared with those arising from boundary reflections, mode conversions and environmental noises, making it a tough task to achieve satisfactory damage identification from the time series. With awareness of this challenge, this paper proposes a time reversal-based technique to enhance the strength of damage-scattered signals, which has been previously applied to bulk wave-based damage detection successfully. The investigation includes (i) an analysis of Lamb wave propagation in a plate, generated by PZT patches mounted on the structure; (ii) an introduction of the time reversal theory dedicated for waveform reconstruction with a narrow-band input; (iii) a process of enhancing damage-scattered signals based on time reversal focalization; and (iv) the experimental investigation of the proposed approach to enhance the damage identification on a composite plate. The results have demonstrated that signals scattered by delamination in the composite plate can be enhanced remarkably with the assistance of the proposed process, benefiting from which the damage in the plate is identified with ease and high precision.

  • MIRIS (Multi-purpose Infrared Imaging System) is the primary payload on the Korean science and technology satellite, STSAT-3, which was launched on 2013 November 21. It is designed to observe the near-infrared sky with a $3.67^{\circ}{\times}3.67^{\circ}$ field of view and a $51.6^{{\prime}{\prime}}{\times}51.6^{{\prime}{\prime}}$ pixel resolution. Using two narrow-band filters at $1.88{\mu}m$ (Pa ${\alpha}$ line) and $1.84+1.92{\mu}m$ (Pa ${\alpha}$ dual continuum), the Paschen ${\alpha}$ Galactic plane survey has been carrying out, and the area for the Galactic longitude from $+280^{\circ}$ to $+100^{\circ}$ (with the width of $-3^{\circ}$ < b < $+3^{\circ}$) has been covered by 2014 August 31. In this contribution, we present the preliminary results of the MIRIS Paschen ${\alpha}$ emission maps and compare them with other wavelength maps such as $H{\alpha}$ and dust maps. Many of the Paschen ${\alpha}$ features have been detected along the plane, and some of them are weak or invisible in the $H{\alpha}$ map and coincide well with dense cloud regions.

  • The ultra hard X-ray band (14-195 keV) provides an important and unbiased way to understand black hole growth and relationship to the host galaxy. The Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) instrument on the Swift satellite has surveyed sky to unprecedented sensitivity, improving the number of known hard X-ray sources by more than a factor of 20 to 836 nearby AGN. The BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS) is a study for the first large (N>600) and complete sample of ultra hard X-ray selected AGN with optical spectroscopy. In this talk, I present the observed relationship between black hole mass, bolometric luminosity, and Eddington ratio with optical emission line ratios. We show that [NII]/Ha ratio exhibits a significant correlation with Eddington ratio. We propose that the [NII]/Ha ratio is a useful indicator of Eddington ratio with 0.6 dex of scatter, and that it can be used to measure Eddington ratio and thus black hole mass from the measured bolometric luminosity, even for high redshift obscured AGN.

  • After permission for utilization of TV white space by FCC, a lot of attentions are focused on spectrum sensing, and various spectrum sensing methods have been proposed. However, they do not consider real environment, thus they are hard to achieve the required performance. In this paper, we propose resolutions for the problem which could be occurred in implementation of spectrum sensing module and verify performance of the proposed methods with computer simulation. The first proposed method utilizes channel status information to separate received signal and spurious for reducing false alarm probability caused by system internal spurious. The another proposed scheme is subband normalization method to prevent miss detection caused by multiple narrow band signals with different received signal strength. The simulation results verify that we can prevent false alarm cause by spurious components with the proposed system internal spurious cognition. Moreover, the proposed subband normalization method shows that it could overcome performance degradation caused by received signal strength difference.

  • In this paper, a microstrip balun-BPF of slotted-square-patch type is proposed. The conventional balun-BPF has some drawbacks of narrow bandwidth and high insertion loss. In order to improve these weak points, we used a square patch in designing balun-BPF on which two slots intersecting perpendicularly and one corner-edge perturbation are adopted. This structure allows one of the most effective use of the patch space so that the insertion loss can be decreased. Changing the slot lengths is use to control the operating frequency and the bandwidth of the balun-BPF. A fabricated balun-BPF shows wide bandwidth of 300 MHz(12.7 %), small insertion loss of 0.56 dB, phase difference of $184^{\circ}{\pm}15^{\circ}$ and amplitude imbalances of within 1 dB between two output ports at 2.4 GHz band.

  • In this paper, we have made the component-based development of observational software for KASI solar imaging spectrograph (KSIS) that is able to obtain three-dimensional imaging spectrograms by using a scanning mirror in front of the spectrograph slit. Since 2002, the KASI solar spectrograph has been successfully operated to observe solar spectra for a given slit region as well as to inspect the response functions of narrow band filters. To improve its capability, we have developed the KSIS that can perform sequential observations of solar spectra by simultaneously controlling the scanning mirror and the CCD camera via Visual C++. Main task of this paper is to introduce the development of the component-based software for KSIS. Each component of the software is reusable on the level of executable file instead of source code because the software was developed by using CBD (component-based development) methodology. The main advantage of such a component-based software is that key components such as image processing component and display component can be applied to other similar observational software without any modifications. Using this software, we have successfully obtained solar imaging spectra of an active region (AR 10708) including a small sunspot. Finally, we present solar $H{\alpha}$ spectra ($6562.81{\AA}$) that were obtained at an active region and a quiet region in order to confirm the validity of the developed KSIS and its software.

  • Background : It has been established that the fundamental frequency(Fo) of the vowels varies systemically as a function of vowel height. Specifically, high vowels have a higher Fo than low vowels. Two major explanations or hypotheses dominate contemporary accounts of fired to explain the mechanisms underlying intrinsic variation in vowel Fo, source-tract coupling hypothesis and tongue-pull hypothesis. Objectives : Total laryngectomy surgery necessiates removal of all structures between the hyoid bone and the tracheal rings. Therefore, the assumption that no direct interconnection exists between the tongue and pharyngoesophageal segment that would mediate systematic variation in vowel Fo appears quite reasonable. If tongue-pull hypothesis is correct, systemic differences in Fo between high versus low vowels produced by esophageal speakers would not Or expected. We analyzed the Fo in the vowels of esophageal voice. Materials and method : The subjects were 11 cases of laryngectomee patients with fluent esophageal voice. The five essential vowels were recorded and analyzed with computer speech analysis system(Computerized Speech Lab). The Fo was measured using acoustic waveform, automatically and manually, and narrow band spectral analysis. Results : The results of this study reveal that intrinsic variation in vowel Fo is clearly evident in esophageal speech. By analysis using acoustic waveform automatically, the signals were too irregular to measure the Fo precisely. So the data from automatic analysis of acoustic waveform is not logical. But the Fo by measuring with manually calculated acoustic waveform or narrowband spectral analysis resulted in acceptable results. These results were interpreted to support neither the source-tract coupling nor the tongue-pull hypotheses and led us to offer an alternative explanation to account for intrinsic variation of Fo.

  • Wideband speech communications with 7㎑ bandwidth can provide high-quality speech services that are almost impossible with current narrow-band speech communications with 3.4 ㎑ bandwidth, and AMR wideband codec was recently developed for these services. The performance of AMR wideband codec is excellent due to its wideband information and partially to ACELP structure, but it requires high computational complexity especially in codebook search. In this paper, to solve this problem, an efficient codebook search method for AMR wideband codec is proposed. The proposed method first determines the coarse initial codevector, then improves the performance of codevector by replacing a poor pulse in codevector with better one iteratively. Simulations show that AMR wideband codec with proposed codebook search method has higher performance with much less computational cost than conventional AMR wideband codec.

  • Formation of nanocrystalline ferrite was investigated using milled powders obtained by planetary ball milling of chips, which were made by high speed mechanical cutting of a low carbon steel(0.15%C-1.1%Mn-0.01%Ti). After 4 hour milling the chips were changed to powders of $50{\mu}m$ in average size, and with increasing milling time the powders were refined to about $3{\mu}m$ for 128 hour and showed more equiaxed shapes. Nanocrystalline(nc) region appeared in the surfaces of powders milled for 1 hour, and the 4 hour milled powders were almost filled with nc region. Hardness of nc region was much higher than that of work-hardened(WH) region. With increasing milling time, ferrite and cementite in pearlite were severely deformed and lamellar spacing was decreased, and then cementites began to disappear after 4 hour milling due to dissolution into ferrite. Deformation bands formed in lightly work-hardened region showed large width and similar crystallographic orientations. Spacing of deformation bands was decreased with deformation and the layered microstructure consisting of narrow deformation bands subdivided into variously oriented small grains was formed by more deformation, and eventually this structure seemed to be evolved to the nc structure by further deformation. It is also conjectured the growth of nc ferrite grains occurred through the coalescence of nanocrystalline ferrites rather than the nucleation and growth of recrystallized grains.

  • In this paper, we propose ATM switch architecture including ALL type 2 switch which can efficiently transmit low-bit rate data, even if the network has many endpoints. We simulate the architecture of ATM switch fabric that is modeled in computer program and analyze the performance according to offered loads. ATM switch proposed in this paper can support cell switching for all types of m cells which consist of ALL type 1. ALL type 2, ALL type 3/4 and ALL type 5 cells. We propose two switch fabric methods; One supports the ALL type 2 cell processing per input port, the other global ALL type 2 cell processing for every input port. The simulation results show that the latter is superior to the former. But the former has a merit for easy implementation and extensibility. In this paper, the AAL Type 2 switch module which adapts the former method is designed using VHDL language and implemented in FPGA chip. The designed AAL Type 2 switch module operates at 52MHz. The proposed ATM switch fabric is widely applicable to mobile communication, narrow band services over ATM network and wireless ATM as well as general ATM switching fabric.
