  • Nanostructures on Graphene surface receive highly attraction for many applications ranging from sensing technologies to molecular electronics. Recently J. Jasuja et al. reported the electrical property tailoring and Raman enhancement by the implantation and growth of dendritic gold nanostructures on graphene derivatives [ACSNANO, 3, 2358, 2013] Here, we introduced Si vapor on the graphen to induce the nanostructure. The surface property change of graphene by controlling the amount of Si and the thickness of graphene were investigated using high resolution photoemission spectroscopy (HRPES), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The Si nanostructures on graphene show the thickness dependency of graphene, and the size of Si nano-structure reached to 7 nm and 15 nm on the mono and the multilayered graphene after $30{\AA}$ Si evaporation.

  • Even if transmissions through normal channel between ubiquitous devices and terminal readers are encrypted, any extra sources of information retrieved from encrypting module can be exploited to figure out the key parameters, so called side channel attack. Since side channel attacks are based on statistical methods, making side channel signal weak or complex is the proper solution to prevent the attack. Among many countermeasures, shielding the electromagnetic signal and adding noise to the EM signal were examined by applying different thicknesses of thin films of ferroelectric (BTO) and conductors (copper and gold). As a test vehicle, chip antenna was utilized to see the change in radiation characteristics: return loss and gain. As a result, the ferroelectric BTO showed no recognizable effect on both shielding and adding noise. Cu thin film showed increasing shielding effect with thickness. Nanometer Au exhibited possibility in adding noise by widening of bandwidth and red shifting of resonating frequencies.

  • Scanning probe microscopes (SPMs) such as the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and the atomic force microscope (AFM) were used for surface modification tools at the nanometer scale. Material surfaces, i. e., titanium, hydrogen-terminated silicon and trimethylsilyl organosilane monolayer on silicon, were locally oxidized with the best lateral spatial resolution of 20nm. The principle behind this proximal probe oxidation method is scanning probe anodization, that is, the SPM tip-sample junction connected through a water column acting as a minute electrochemical cell. An SPM-nanolithogrphy process was demonstrated using the organosilane monolayer as a resist. Area-selective chemical modifications, i. e., etching, electroless plating with gold, monolayer deposition and immobilization of latex nanoparticles; were achieved in nano-scale resolution. The area-selectivity was based on the differences in chemical properties between the SPM-modified and unmodified regions.

  • A synthesized 21-mer single-stranded DNA(ss DNA) was covalently immobilized onto a self-assembled aminoethanethiol monolayer modified gold electrode onto QCM. The covalently immobilized ssDNA was hybridized with complementary ssDNA. The interaction between surface immobilized ssDNA and complementary 21-mer DNA in solution was also examined. Each step was followed by monitoring changes in the QCM frequency with time. Also, PBS with pH 7.0 was selected as a supporting electrolyte in order to get maximum sensitivity and good bioactivity.

  • Here, the rapid detection of Salmonella typhimurium by a portable surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor in which the beam from a diode laser is modulated by a rotating mirror is reported. Using this system, immunoassay based on lipopolysaccharides (LPS)-specific monoclonal anti-Salmonella antibody was performed. For the purpose of orientation-controlled immobilization of antibodies on the SPR chip surface, the cysteine-mediated immobilization method, which is based on interaction between a gold surface and a thiol group (-SH) of cysteine, was adopted. As a result, using the portable SPR-based immunoassay, we detected S. typhimurium in the range from 10^7 CFU/mL to 10^9 CFU/mL within 1 hour. The results indicate that the portable SPR system could be potentially applied for general laboratory detection as well as on-site monitoring of foodborne, clinical, and environmental agents of interest.

  • Redox complexes to transport electrodes from bioreactors to electrodes are very important part in electrochemical biosensor industry. A novel osmium redox complexes were synthesized by the coordinating pyridine group having different functional group at 4-position with osmium metal. Newly synthesized osmium complexes are described as ${[Os(dme-bpy)}_2{(ap-im)Cl]}^{+/2+}$, ${[Os(dme-bpy)}_2{(ap-im)Cl]}^{+/2+}$, ${[Os(dmo-bpy)}_2{(ap-im)Cl]}^{+/2+}$, ${[Os(dcl-bpy)}_2{(ap-im)Cl]}^{+/2+}$. We have been studied the electrochemical characteristics of these osmium complex with electrochemical techniques such as cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperommetry. Osmium redox complexes were immobilized on the screen printed carbon electrode(SPE) with deposited gold nanoparticles. The electrical signal converts the osmium redox films into an electrocatalyst for glucose oxidation. Each catalytic currents were related with the potentials of osmium complexes.

  • Recently, there have been several studies on the inspiration and application of optimized natural structures. One study introduced a new adhesion method that was inspired by the feet of geckos because of their superior features such as high adhesion strength, ease-of-removal, and they are environmentally friendly. Various micro- or nano-structures were fabricated and tested for gecko-like dry adhesives, but gecko-like dry adhesives that were developed became easily worn from frequent use. In this study, we propose a metal-coating method to improve the durability of gecko-like dry adhesives. We evaluate the initial adhesion strength and durability by performing repeated adhesion tests on a glass plate. The initial adhesive strength of gold-coated micro-structures was 60% of that for non-coated ones. However, the adhesive strength of gold-coated micro-structures was kept as 58% of their initial adhesion strength, while that of non-coated ones was only 40%.

  • Redox complexes to transport electrons from enzyme to electrodes are very important part in glucose sensor. Pentacyanoferrate-bound aniline ($Fe(CN)_5$-aminopyridine), was prepared as a potential redox mediator in a glucose dehydrogenase (GDH)-glucose sensor. The synthesized pyridyl-$NH_2$ to pentacyanoferrate was characterized by the electrochemical and spectroscopic methods. A amperometric enzyme-linked electrode was developed based on GDH, which catalyses the oxidation of glucose. Glucose was detected using GDH that was co-immobilized with an $Fe(CN)_5$-aminopyridine and gold nano-particles (AuNPs) on ITO electrodes. The $Fe(CN)_5$-aminopyridine and AuNPs immobilized onto ITO electrodes provided about a two times higher electrochemical response compared to that of a bare ITO electrode. As glucose was catalyzed by wired GDH, the electrical signal was monitored at 0.4 V versus Ag/AgCl by cyclic voltammetry. The anode currents was linearly increased in proportion to the glucose concentration over the 0~10 mM range.

  • Purpose: TiN films were deposited on sus304 by unbalanced magnetron sputtering system which was designed and developed as unbalancing the strength of the magnets in the magnetron electrode. The color and hardness of deposited TiN films was investigated. Methods: The cross sections of deposited films on silicon wafer were observed by SEM to measure the thickness of the films, the components of the surface of the films were identified by XPS, the components of the inner parts of the films were observed by XPS depth profiling. XPS high resolution scans and curve fittings of deposited films were performed for quantitative chemical analysis, Vickers micro hardness measurements of deposited films were performed with a nano indenter equipment. Results: The colors of deposited films gradually changed from light gold to dark gold, light violet, and indigo color with increasing of the thickness. It could be seen that the color change come from the composite change of three compound,$TiO_{x}N_{y}$, $TiO_2$, TiN. Especially, the composite change of$TiO_{x}N_{y}$ compound was thought to affect the color change with respect to thickness. Conclusions: Deposited films had lower than the value of general TiN film in Vickers hardness, which was caused by mixing three TiN, $TiO_2$,$TiO_{x}N_{y}$ compound in the deposited films. The increasing and decreasing of micro hardness with respect to thickness was thought to have something to do with the composite of TiN in the films.
