  • Nano composite materials were multi-constituent combinations of nano dimensional phases with distinct differences in structure, chemistry and properties. Nano particles were less likely to create large stress concentrations and thereby can avoid the compromise of the material ductility while improve other mechanical properties. Corona discharge was an electrical discharge. The ionization of a fluid surrounding a conductor was electrically energized. This discharge would occur when the strength of the electric field around the conductor was high enough to form a conductive region, but not high enough to cause electrical breakdown or arcing to nearby objects. This paper shows all the studies done on the preparation of nano fillers. Special attention has given to the ACSR transmission line conductor, TiO2 nano fillers and also to the evaluation of corona resistance on dielectric materials discussed in detail. The measurement of the dielectric properties of the nano fillers and the parameters influencing them were also discussed in the paper. Corona discharge test reveals that in 0%N ACSR sample corona loss was directly proportional to the applied line voltage. No significant change in corona loss between 0%N and 1%N. When TiO2 nano filler concentration was increased up to 10%N fine decrement in corona loss was found when compared to base ACSR conductor, corona loss was decreased by 40.67% in 10%N ACSR sample. It was also found from the surface conditions test that inorganic TiO2 nano filler increases the key parameters like tensile strength and erosion depth.

  • A novel application of nano-technology in the field of engineering, called colloidal damper, is investigated. This device is complementary to the hydraulic damper, having a cylinder-piston construction. Particularly for colloidal damper, the hydraulic oil is replacedby a colloidal suspension, which is consisted from a nano-porous matrix with controlled architecture and a lyophobic fluid. In this experimental work, the porous matrix is composed from silica gel, with labyrinth architecture, coated by organo-silicones substances in order to achieve a hydrophobic surface. Water is considered as associated lyophobic fluid. The colloidal damper test rig and the measuring technique of the hysteresis are described. the influence of the hydrophobicity level upon the colloidal damper hysteresis is investigated, for silica gels with similar pores distribution. A certain desired shape of the hysteresis can be achieved by employing mixture of silica gels with different level of hydrophobicity and/or architecture. With these results, it is believed that the proposed damper can be designed and be applied to the desired structure.

  • Many studies have been conducted to increase heat transfer in fluid. One of the various heat transfer enhancement techniques is suspending fine metallic or nonmetallic solid powder in traditional fluid. Nanofluid is defined as a new kind of heat transfer fluid containing a very small quantity of nanometer particles that are uniformly and stably suspended in a liquid. This study investigates the effect of nanofluid containing diamond, CuNi and CuAg nanometer particles, and proposes the heat transport mechanism of nanofluid. The test result shows that the thermal conductivity of nanofluid is much higher than that of traditional fluid, and the increasing rate of the conductivity is dependent on the conductivity of the solid metal.

  • In this study, the characteristics and sinterablities of TiO2 powders which were fabricated on sol-gel process and supercritical fluid process were examined. The powders fabricated on sol-gel process were amorphous. The particle size and shape were changed with the amount of water used for hydrolysis of titanium ethoxide. The powders were changed from amorphous to crystalline by heating at 400℃. The crystalline anatase TiO2 powders were directly prepared in ethanol supercritical fluid condition that temperature was 270±3℃ and pressure was 7.3 MPa. It's primary crystalline size was 20 nm and agglomerated as spherical shape whose size was 0.7∼1㎛. The powders prepared on sol-gel process were not sintered densely at 900℃ because of abnormal grain growth. However, the powders which prepared on supercritical fluid process were sintered densely at the comparatively low temperature of 800℃ by ideal growth of grain, which are fired at 900℃.

  • Shear thickening is an intriguing phenomenon in the fields of chemical engineering and rheology because it originates from complex situations with experimental and numerical measurements. This paper presents results from the numerical modeling of the particle-fluid dynamics of a two-dimensional mixture of colloidal particles immersed in a fluid. Our results reveal the characteristic particle behavior with an application of a shear force to the upper part of the fluid domain. By combining the lattice Boltzmann and discrete element methods with the calculation of the lubrication forces when particles approach or recede from each other, this study aims to reveal the behavior of the suspension, specifically shear thickening. The results show that the calculated suspension viscosity is in good agreement with the experimental results. Results describing the particle deviation, diffusivity, concentration, and contact numbers are also demonstrated.

  • The micron or nano-sized lysozyme as a model protein drug was prepared using solution enhanced dispersion by supercritical fluid (SEDS) process at various conditions (e.g., solvent, temperature and pressure) to investigate the feasibility of pulmonary protein drug delivery. The lysozyme particles prepared were characterized by laser diffraction particle size analyzer, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and powder X-ray diffractometry (PXRD). The biological activity of lysozyme particles after/before SEDS process was also examined. Lysozyme was precipitated as spherical particles. The precipitated particles consisted of 100 - 200 nm particles. Particle size showed the precipitates to be agglomerates with primary particles of size $1\;-\;5 \;{\mu}m$. The biological activity varied between 38 and 98% depending on the experimental conditions. There was no significant difference between untreated lysozyme and lysozyme after SEDS process in PXRD analysis. Therefore, the SEDS process could be a novel method to prepare micron or nano-sized lysozyme particles, with minimal loss of biological activity, for the pulmonary delivery of protein drug.

  • Rotating fluid induced vibration and instability of embedded piezoelectric nano-composite separators subjected to magnetic and electric fields is the main contribution of present work. The separator is modeled with cylindrical shell element and the structural damping effects are considered by Kelvin-Voigt model. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are used as reinforcement and effective material properties are obtained by mixture rule. The perturbation velocity potential in conjunction with the linearized Bernoulli formula is used for describing the rotating fluid motion. The orthotropic surrounding elastic medium is considered by spring, damper and shear constants. The governing equations are derived on the bases of classical shell theory (CST), first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and sinusoidal shear deformation theory (SSDT). The nonlinear frequency and critical angular fluid velocity are calculated by differential quadrature method (DQM). The detailed parametric study is conducted, focusing on the combined effects of the external voltage, magnetic field, visco-Pasternak foundation, structural damping and volume percent of SWCNTs on the stability of structure. The numerical results are validated with other published works as well as comparing results obtained by three theories. Numerical results indicate that with increasing volume fraction of SWCNTs, the frequency and critical angular fluid velocity are increased.

  • This work experimentally explored the influence of nano-fouling on CHF, flow boiling heat transfer coefficient, contact angle, and surface roughness. In this study, the flow velocity conditions are established at 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 m/s. Also, the nanoparticles of oxidized MWCNT were deposited on a heat transfer surface for 0, 120, 180, and 240 sec. As the results, it was found that CHF and superheated temperature were increased in case of nano fouling on the heat transfer surface in oxidized MWCNT fluid. Also, the contact angle and surface roughness decreased when flow velocity and nano coating increased.

  • Nano imprint lithography(NIL) is a cost-efficient, high-throughput processing technique to transfer nano-scale patterns onto thin polymer films. Polymers used as the resist include UV cured resins as well as thermoplastics such as polymethyl-methacrylate(PMMA). In this study, an analytic investigation was performed for the NIL process of transferring nano scale patterns onto polymeric films. Process optimization calls for a thorough understanding of resist flow during the process. We carried out 2D and 3D numerical analyses of resist flow during NIL process. The simulation incorporated continuum-hypothesis and the effects of surface tension were taken into account. For a more effective prediction of free surface, fixed grid scheme with the volume of fluid (VOF) method were used. The simulation results were verified with experimental results qualitatively. And the parametric study was performed for various process conditions.
