  • Two dimensional (2D) arrays of noble metal nanoparticles are widely used in the sensing of nanoscale biological and chemical events. Research in this area has sparked considerable interest in many fields owing to the novel optical properties, e.g., the localized surface plasmon resonance, of these metallic nanoarrays. In this paper, we report successes in fabricating 2D arrays of gold nano-islands using nanosphere lithography. The reproducibility and the effectiveness of the nano-patterning method are tested by means of spin coating and capillary force deposition. We found that the capillary force deposition method was more effective for nanospheres with diameters greater than 600 nm, whereas the spin coating method works better for nanospheres with diameters less than 600 nm. The optimal deposition parameters for both methods were reported, showing about 80% reproducibility. In addition, we characterize gold nano-island arrays both geometrically with AFM as well as optically with UV-VIS spectrometry. The AFM images revealed that the obtained nano-arrays formed a hexagonal pattern of truncated tetrahedron nano-islands. The experimental and theoretical values of the geometric parameters were compared. The 2D gold nano-arrays showed strong LSPR in the absorption spectra. As the nano-islands increased in size, the LSPR absorption bands became red-shifted. Linear dependence of the plasmon absorption maximum on the size of the gold nano-islands was identified through the increment in the plasmon absorption maximum rate for a one nanometer increase in the characteristic length of the nano-islands. We found that the 2D gold nano-arrays showed nearly seven-fold higher sensitivity of the absorption spectrum to the size of the nano-islands as compared to colloidal gold nano-particles.

  • The photoluminescence (PT) properties of Al-doped ZnO thin films grown by the sol-gel dip-coating method have been investigated. At 12 K, nine distinct PL peaks were observed at 2.037, 2.592, 2.832, 3.027, 3.177, 3.216, 3.260, 3.303, and 3.354 eV. The deep-level emissions (2.037, 2.592, 2.832, and 3.027 eV) were attributed to native defects. The near-band-edge (NBE) emission peaks at 3.354, 3.303, 3.260, 3.216, and 3.177 eV were attributed to the emission of the neutral-donor-bound excitons ($D^0X$), two-electron satellite (TES), free-to-neutral-acceptors (e,$A^0$), donor-acceptor pairs (DAP), and second-order longitudinal optical (2LO) phonon replicas of the TES (TES-2LO), respectively. According to Haynes' empirical rule, we calculated the energy of a free exciton (FX) to be 3.374 eV. The thermal activation energy for $D^0X$ in the nanocrystalline ZnO thin film was found to be ~25 meV, corresponding to the thermal dissociation energy required for $D^0X$ transitions.

  • ZnO nano-fibrous thin films with various precursor concentrations ranging from 0.2 to 1.0 mol (M) were grown by spin-coating method and effects of the precursor concentration on surface and optical properties of the ZnO nano-ribrous thin films were investigated by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and photoluminescence (PL). ZnO nuclei were formed at the precursor concentration below 0.4 M and the ZnO nano-fibrous thin films were grown at the precursor concentration above 0.6 M. Further increase in the precursor concentration, the thickness of the ZnO nano-fibrous thin films is gradually increased. The intensity and the full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of the near-band-edge emission (NBE) is increased as the precursor concentration is increased. The deep-level emission (DLE) is red-shifted as the precursor concentration is increased.

  • Recently nanoscience and nanotechnology have been studied intensively, and many plants, insects, and animals in nature have been found to have nanostructures in their bodies. Among them, lotus leaves have a unique nanostructure and microstructure in combination and show superhydrophobicity and a self-cleaning function to wipe and clean impurities on their surfaces. Coating films with combined nanostructures and microstructures resembling those of lotus leaves may also have superhydrophobicity and self-cleaning functions; as a result, they could be used in various applications, such as in outfits, tents, building walls, or exterior surfaces of transportation vehicles like cars, ships, or airplanes. In this study, coating films were prepared by dip coating method using polypropylene polymers dissolved in a mixture of solvent, xylene and non-solvent, methylethylketon, and ethanol. Additionally, attempts were made to prepare nanostructures on top of microstructures by coating with the same coating solution with an addition of carbon nanotubes, or by applying a carbon nanotube over-coat on polymer coating films. Coating films prepared without carbon nanotubes were found to have superhydrophobicity, with a water contact angle of $152^{\circ}$ and sliding angle less than $2^{\circ}$. Coating films prepared with carbon nanotubes were also found to have a similar degree of superhydrophobicity, with a water contact angle of 150 degrees and a sliding angle of 3 degrees.

  • A.C. impedance properties of HA/Ti compound layer coated Ti-30Ta-($3{\sim}15$)Nb alloys have been studied by electrochemical method. Ti-30Ta binary alloys contained 3, 7, 10 and 15 wt% Nb were manufactured by the vacuum furnace system. And then specimen was homogenized at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 24 hrs. The sample was cut and polished for corrosion test and coating. It was coated with HA/Ti compound layer by magnetron sputter. The non-coated and coated morphology of Ti alloy were analyzed by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), energy X-ray dispersive spectroscopy (EDX) and filed emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). The corrosion behaviors were investigated using A.C. impedance test (PARSTAT 2273, USA) in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. Ti-30Ta-($3{\sim}15\;wt%$)Nb alloys showed the ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ phase, and $\beta$ phase peak was predominantly appeared in the case of increasingly Nb contents. The microstructures of Ti alloy were transformed from needle-like structure to equiaxed structure as Nb content increased. From the analysis of coating surface, HA/Ti composite surface uniformed coating layer with 750 nm thickness. The growth directions of film were (211), (112), (300) and (202) for HA/Ti composite coating on the surface after heat treatment at $550^{\circ}C$, whereas, the growth direction of film was (110) for Ti coating. The polarization resistance ($R_p$) of HA/Ti composite coated Ti-alloys were higher than those of the Ti and HA coated samples in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. Especially, corrosion resistance of Ti-Ta-Nb system increased as Nb content increased.

  • Micron size Co-alloy 800 (T800) powder is coated on the high temperature, oxidation and corrosion resistant super alloy Inconel 718 substrate by the optimal high velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) thermal spray coating process developed by this laboratory. For the study of durability improvement of high speed spindle operating without lubricants, friction and sliding wear behaviors of the coatings are investigated both at room and at an elevated temperature of $1000^{\circ}F(538^{\circ}C)$. Friction coefficients, wear traces and wear debris of coatings are drastically reduced compared to those of non-coated surface of Inconel 718 substrate both at room temperature and at $538^{\circ}C$. Friction coefficients and wear traces of both coated and non-coated surfaces are drastically reduced at higher temperature of $538^{\circ}C$ compared with those at room temperature. At high temperature, the brittle oxides such as CoO, $Co_{3}O_{4}$, $MoO_2$ and $MoO_3$ are formed rapidly on the sliding surfaces, and the brittle oxide phases are easily attrited by reciprocating slides at high temperature through oxidation and abrasive wear mechanisms. The brittle solid oxide particles, softens, melts and partial-melts play roles as solid and liquid lubricants reducing friction coefficient and wear. These show that the coating is highly recommendable for the durability improvement coating on the machine component surfaces vulnerable to frictional heat and wear.

  • Silicon carbide ceramics are used for oxidation resistive coating films due to their excellent properties like high strength, good oxidation resistance, and good abrasion resistance, but they have poor formability and are prepared by vapor process which is complicated, costly, and sometimes hazardous. In this study, preparation of silicon carbide coating film by liquid process using polymer precursor was attempted. Coating film was prepared by dip coating on substrate followed by heat treatment in argon at $1200^{\circ}C$. By changing the dipping speed, the thickness was controlled. The effects of plasticizer, binder, or fiber addition on suppression of crack generation in the polymer and ceramic films were examined. It was found that fiber additives was effective for suppressing crack generation.

  • The advantages of nano-scale materials (size 1-99 nm in at least in one dimension) could be realized with their potential applications in diversified avenues. Herein, we report for the first time on the successful synthesis of homogeneous epoxy coatings containing phytogenic silver nanoparticles (Ag) on PVC and glass substrates by room-temperature curing of fully mixed epoxy slurry diluted by acetone. Alstonia scholaris bark extract was used to reduce and stabilize the silver ions. The surface morphology and mechanical properties of these coatings were characterized using the techniques like, UV-Vis (UV-Visible) spectrophotometry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry (FT-IR), Epifluorescence microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effect of incorporating Ag nanoparticles on the biofilm (scale) resistant epoxy-coated PVC was investigated by total viable counts ($CFU/cm^2$) from epoxy coating from (Initial) $1^{st}$ day to $25^{th}$ days. The phytogenic Ag nanoparticles were found to be significantly improving the microstructure of the coating matrix and thus enhanced the anti-biofilm performance of the epoxy coating. In addition, the antimicrobial mechanism of Ag nanoparticles played an important role in improving the anti-biofilm performance of these epoxy coatings.

  • To produce stable polymer coating layer using the interaction between metal stent and polymer layer, Ahx-HSAB was synthesized by coupling 6-aminoheanoic acid (Ahx) with N-Hydroxy succinimidyl 4-azidobenzonate (HSAB) containing photo reactive group. Then, Ahx-HSAB was applied to self·assembled monolayer (SAM) on $TiO_2$-coated surface, since one end of Ahx-HSAB was carboxyl acid which was known to be able to interact with $TiO_2$ surface. That SAM layer was incubated in 1% polycaprolacton (PCL) solution and photoreacted by ultraviolet light (254 nm) to produce the chemical bond between SAM and polymer layer, followed by PCL polymer coating ({\sim}5\;{\mu}m$) by the method of spray coating. The surface change was investigated by measuring of contact angle of the surface. The contact angle values of stainless steel (SS) surface, $TiO_2$-coated surface, SAM layer by Ahx-HSAB, photoreacted surface with PCL and PCL layer by spray coating were 70.48${\pm}$1.89, 38.57${\pm}$3.31, 60.14${\pm}$2.21, 54.91${\pm}$2.70 and 56.47${\pm}$2.12, respectively. The stability of polymer layers was tested by incubation of PCL-coated plates in 0.1M PBS buffer (pH 7.4, 0.05%, Tween 80) with vigorous shaking (200 rpm). While the poiymer layer prepared by these processes showed the intact surface morphology over 3 days, the polymer layers prepared by spray coating of PCL onto SS plate (control 1) and $TiO_2$-coated SS plate (control 2) were Peeled off in 3 days. Thus, the polymer coating method using SAM and photoreaction seems to be a effective method to obtain the stable polymer layer onto SS surface.
