  • In this study, using a tin chloride solution as the raw material, a nano-sized tin oxide powder with an average particle size below 50 nm is generated by a spray pyrolysis process. The properties of the tin oxide powder according to the nozzle tip size are examined. Along with an increase in the nozzle tip size from 1 mm to 5 mm, the generated particles that appear in the shape of droplets maintain an average particle size of 30 nm. When the nozzle tip size increases from 1 mm to 2 mm, the average size of the generated particles is around 80-100 nm, and the ratio of the independent particles with a compact surface structure increases significantly. When the nozzle tip size is at 3 mm, the majority of the generated particles maintain the droplet shape, the average size of the droplet-shaped particles increases remarkably compared to the cases of other nozzle tip sizes, and the particle size distribution also becomes extremely irregular. When the nozzle tip size is at 5 mm, the ratio of droplet-shaped particles decreases significantly and most of the generated particles are independent ones with incompact surface structures. Along with an increase in the nozzle tip size from 1 mm to 3 mm, the XRD peak intensity increases, whereas the specific surface area decreases greatly. When the nozzle tip size increases up to 5 mm, the XRD peak intensity decreases significantly, while the specific surface area increases remarkably.

  • In this study, surface characteristics of dental implant fixture with various manufacturing process have been researched using electrochemical methods. The dental implant fixture was selected with 5 steps by cleaning, surface treatment and sterilization with same size and screw structure; the 1st step-machined surface, 2nd step-cleaned by thinner and prosol solution, 3th step-surface treated by RBM (resorbable blasting media) method, 4th step-cleaned and dried, 5th step-sterilized by gamma-ray. The electrochemical behavior of dental implant fixture has been evaluated by using potentiostat (EG&G Co, 2273A) in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The corrosion surface was observed using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The step 5 sample showed the cleaner and rougher surface than step 3 sample. The step 5 sample of implant fixture treated by RBM and gamma sterilization showed the low corrosion current density compared to others. Especially, the step 3 sample of implant fixture treated by RBM was presented the lowest value of corrosion resistance and the highest value of corrosion current density. The step 3 sample showed the low value of polarization resistance compared to other samples. In conclusion, the implant fixture treated with RBM and gamma sterilization has the higher corrosion resistance, and corrosion resistance depends on the step of manufacturing process.

  • The effects of conductive additives in a $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}MnO_3$ perovskite bifunctional electrode for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) were investigated in an alkaline solution. Highly porous carbon black (CB) and Ni powder were added to the bifunctional electrodes as conductive additives. The surface morphologies of electrodes containing CB and Ni were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The current densities for both ORR and OER were changed by the addition of CB. The conductive additive changed physical properties of bifunctional electrodes such as the sheet conductance, gas permeability and contact angle. It was observed that the air permeability of electrode was most effective to enhance the currents for ORR and OER.

  • MANPADS (man-portable air defense system) is a counterweapon system against enemy aircraft, tracking the MWIR (mid-wavelength of infrared) signature of the plume. Under foggy conditions, however, multiple scattering phenomenon caused by the particles affects the MWIR transmittance, and the MANPADS detection performance. Therefore, in this study we analyzed the lock-on range of MANPADS with varying fog conditions and plume characteristics. To analyze the optical extinction properties and transmittance in fog, Mie scattering theory and analytic solution of the radiative-transfer equation are utilized. In addition, we used flare signature as an alternative MWIR light source. We confirmed that the lock-on range could be noticeably reduced under conditions of mist, and proportional to the flare temperature.

  • This work was performed to characterize the electrochemical behavior of AZ31 Mg alloy in neutral aqueous solutions where Cl-, SO42-, PO43-, and F- ions were present and pH was adjusted to 6 to exclude the contribution of H+ and OH- ions. Open-circuit potential (OCP) transient, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potnetiodynamic polarization curves were employed. The OCP value appeared to decrease in the order of F- > Cl- > SO42- > PO43- ions while corrosion current density increased in the same order. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) data showed two capacitive arcs in all the solutions and one more inductive arc appeared in PO43--containing solution. By fitting of two capacitive arcs, capacitance of dense film (Cdf), resistance of porous film (Rpf) and double layer capacitance (Cdl) and charge transfer resistance (Rct) beneath the porous films were obtained. A simplified model in which various thicknesses and coverages of dense and porous films are assumed to be present on the AZ31 Mg alloy surface, is suggested to explain the effects of four different anions on the electrochemical behavior of AZ31 Mg alloy.

  • In this study, nano-sized indium oxide powder with the average particle size below 100 nm is prepared from the indium chloride solution by the spray pyrolysis process. The effects of the concentration of raw material solution, the nozzle tip size and the air pressure on the properties of powder were studied. As the indium concentration of the raw material solution increased from 40 g/l to 350 g/l, the average particle size of the powder gradually increased from 20 nm to 60 nm, yet the particle size distribution appeared more irregular, the intensity of a XRD peak increased and specific surface area decreased. As the nozzle tip size increased from 1 nm to 5 nm, the average particle size of the powder increased from 40 nm to 100 nm, the particle size distribution was much more irregular, the intensity of a XRD peak increased and specific surface area decreased. As the air pressure increased from 0.1 kg/cm$^2$ to 0.5 kg/cm$^2$, the average particle size of the powder varies slightly upto 90~100 nm. As the air pressure increased from 1 kg/cm$^2$ to 3 kg/cm$^2$, the average particle size decreased upto 50~60 nm, the intensity of a XRD peak decreased and the specific surface area increased.

  • To develop chemical and biosensors, this paper studies sensing characteristics of bulk carbon nanotube (CNT) electrodes by means of their electrical impedance properties due to their large surface area and excellence chemical absorptivity. The sensors were fabricated in the form of film and nano web style by using composite process for mass production. The bulk composite electrodes were fabricated with singlewall and multi-wall carbon nanotubes based on host polymers such as Nafion and PAN, using a solution-casting and an electrospinning technique. The resistance and the capacitance of electrodes were measured with LCR meter under the various amounts of buffer solution to study the electrical impedance change properties of them. On the experimental of sensor electrode, impedance characteristics of the composite electrode are affected by its host polymer and nanofiller and its sensing response showed saturated result after applying some amounts of buffer solution for test chemical. Especially, the capacitance values showed drastic changes while the resistance values only changed within few percent range. It is deduced that the ions in the solution penetrated and diffused into the electrodes surface changed the electrical properties of the electrodes much like a doping effect.

  • In this study, waste ITO target is dissolved into hydrochloric acid to generate a complex indium-tin chloride solution. Nano sized ITO powder with an average particle size below 30 nm are generated from these raw material solutions by spray pyrolysis process. Also, in this study, thermodynamic equations for the formation of indium-tin oxide (ITO) are established. As the reaction temperature increased from $800^{\circ}C$ to $900^{\circ}C$, the proportion and size of the spherical droplet shape in which nano sized particles aggregated gradually decreased, and the surface structure gradually became densified. When the reaction temperature was $800^{\circ}C$, the average particle size of the generated powder was about 20 nm, and no significant sintering was observed. At a reaction temperature of $900^{\circ}C$, the split of the droplet was more severe than at $800^{\circ}C$, and the rate of maintenance of the initial atomized droplet shape decreased sharply. The average particle size of the powder formed was about 25 nm. The ITO particles were composed of single solid crystals, regardless of reaction temperature. XRD analysis showed that only the ITO phase was formed. Remarkably, the specific surface area decreased by about 30% as the reaction temperature increased from $800^{\circ}C$ to $900^{\circ}C$.

  • Lead sulfide (PbS) Colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) are promising material for the photovoltaic device due to its various outstanding properties such as tunable band-gap, solution processability, and infrared absorption. More importantly, PbS CQDs have large exciton Bohr radius of 20 nm due to the uniquely large dielectric constants that result in the strong quantum confinement. To exploit desirable properties in photovoltaic device, it is essential to fabricate a device exhibiting stable performance. Unfortunately, the performance of PbS NQDs based Schottky solar cell is considerably degraded according to the exposure in the air. The air-exposed degradation originates on the oxidation of interface between PbS NQDS layer and metal electrode. Therefore, it is necessary to enhance the stability of Schottky junction device by inserting a passivation layer. We investigate the effect of insertion of passivation layer on the performance of Schottky junction solar cells using PbS NQDs with band-gap of 1.3 eV. Schottky solar cell is the simple photovoltaic device with junction between semiconducting layer and metal electrode which a significant built-in-potential is established due to the workfunction difference between two materials. Although the device without passivation layer significantly degraded in several hours, considerable enhancement of stability can be obtained by inserting the very thin LiF layer (<1 nm) as a passivation layer. In this study, LiF layer is inserted between PbS NQDs layer and metal as an interface passivation layer. From the results, we can conclude that employment of very thin LiF layer is effective to enhance the stability of Schottky junction solar cells. We believe that this passivation layer is applicable not only to the PbS NQDs based solar cell, but also the various NQDs materials in order to enhance the stability of the device.
