  • Titanium carbides are widely used for cutting tools and grinding wheels, because of their superior physical properties such as high melting temperature, high hardness, high wear resistance, good thermal conductivity and excellent thermal shock resistance. The common synthesizing method for the titanium carbide powders is carbo-thermal reduction from the mixtures of titanium oxide($TiO_2$) and carbon black. The purpose of the present research is to fabricate nano TiC powders using titanium salt and titanium hydride by the mechanochemical process(MCP). The initial elements used in this experiment are liquid $TiCl_4$(99.9%), $TiH_2$(99.9%) and active carbon(<$32{\mu}m$, 99.9%). Mg powders were added to the $TiCl_4$ solution in order to induce the reaction with Cl-. The weight ratios of the carbon and Mg powders were theoretically calculated. The TiC and $MgCl_2$ powders were milled in the planetary milling jar for 10 hours. The 40 nm TiC powders were fabricated by wet milling for 4 hours from the $TiCl_4$+C+Mg solution, and 300 nm TiC particles were obtained by using titanium hydride.

  • We report the wet etching of titanium nickel (TiNi) films for the production of nano-electro-mechanical (NEM) device. $SiO_2$ and $Si_3N_4$ have been selected as sacrificial layers of TiNi metal and etched with polyethylene glycol and hydrofluoric acid (HF) mixed solution. Volume percentage of HF are varied from 10% to 35% and the etch rate of the $SiO_2$, $Si_3N_4$ and TiNi are reported here. Within the various experiment results, 15% HF mixed polyethylene glycol solution show highest etch ratio between sacrificial layer and TiNi metal. Especially $Si_3N_4$ films shows high etch ratio with TiNi films. Wet etching results are measured with SEM inspection. Therefore, this experiment provides a novel method for TiNi in the nano-electro-mechanical device.

  • We describe the fabrication and characterization of a doubly clamped multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT). The device was assembled by an application of electric field in solution. The MWNT was clamped on end of metal trench electrodes in solution and deposited with additional platinum (Pt) on edge of electrode for firmly suspending the MWNT by focused ion beam (FIB). The MWNTs range of diameter and length were 100 to 150 nm and 1.5 to $2{\mu}m$, respectively. Electrical characteristics of fabricated devices were measured by I-V curve and impedance analysis. The mechanical deformation was observed by resistivity in high air pressure. Resonant frequency around 6.8 MHz was detected and resistivity was linearly varied according to the magnitude of air pressure. This device could have potential applications in nanoelectronics and various sensors.

  • It has been known that the synthesis of the cathode materials for the lithium rechargeable batteries by the sol-gel process has many advantages over the conventional solid-state method. It has been, however, a continuing issue that new additional steps should be introduced to commercialize this process. In this work, spray drying was introduced to the existing sol-gel process as a continuous mass production method of the pre-heat treatment precursor materials. The precursors of $LiCoO_2$ and $LiNi_{0.8}Co_{0.2}O_2$ were continuously produced through spray drying from the solution containing stoichiometric amount of lithium, cobalt, and nickel sources as well as a chelating agent. The process variables, such as pH of the starting solution, spray drying conditions, and calcination conditions were optimized. The XRD pattern for the synthesized material indicated a good crystallinity with a layered structure.

  • AlO(OH) nano gel is used in precursor of ceramic material, coating material and catalyst. For use of these, not only physiochemical control for particle morphology, pore characteristic and peptization but also studies of synthetic method for preparation of advanced application products were required. In this study, AlO(OH) nano gel was prepared through the aging and drying process of aluminum hydroxides gel precipitated by the hydrolysis reaction of dilute NaOH solution and aluminum sulfate solution. In this process, optimum synthetic condition of AlO(OH) nano gel having excellent pore volume as studying the effect of water and aluminum sulfate mole ratio on gel precipitates has been studied. Water and aluminum sulfate mole ratio brought about numerous changes on crystal morphology, surface area, pore volume and pore size. Physiochemical properties were investigated as using XRD, TEM, TG/DTA, FT-IR, and $N_2$ BET method.

  • Poly(ethylene glycol) end-capped with pentafluorophenyl group(s) in ABA (FP-PEG-FP) and AB (mPEG-FP) types were prepared. Even though they were similar in composition, the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of FP-PEG-FP was observed at $23^{\circ}C$, whereas that of mPEG-FP was observed at $65^{\circ}C$. To understand the large difference in solution behaviour of the two polymers, UV-VIS spectroscopy, microcalorimetry, 1H-NMR spectroscopy, and dynamic light scattering were used. FP-PEG-FP has two hydrophobic pentafluorophenyl groups at the ends of hydrophilic PEG (1000 Daltons), whereas mPEG-PF has a highly dynamic PEG (550 Daltons) block that are anchored to a hydrophobic pentafluorophenyl group. PF-PEG-PF not only has a smaller conformational degree of freedom than mPEG-PF but also can form extensive intermolecular aggregates, therefore, PF-PEG-PF exhibits a significantly lower LCST than mPEG-PF. This paper suggests that topological control is very important in designing a temperature-sensitive polymer.

  • Purine catabolite screening enables reliable diagnosis of certain diseases. In this regard, the development of a facile detection strategy with high sensitivity and selectivity is demanded for point-of-care applications. In this work, the simultaneous detection of uric acid (UA), xanthine (XA), and hypoxanthine (HX) was carried out as model purine catabolites by surface-enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS). The detection assay was conducted by employing high-aspect ratio Au nanopillar substrates coupled with in-situ Au electrodeposition on the substrates. The additional modification of the Au nanopillar substrates via electrodeposition was found to be an effective method to encapsulate molecules in solution into nanogaps of growing Au films that increase metal-molecule contact and improve substrate's sensitivity and selectivity. In complex solutions, the approach facilitated ternary identification of UA, XA, and HX down to concentration limits of 4.33 𝜇M, 0.71 𝜇M, and 0.22 𝜇M, respectively, which are comparable to their existing levels in normal human physiology. These results demonstrate that the proposed platform is reliable for practical point-of-care analysis of biofluids where solution matrix effects greatly reduce selectivity and sensitivity for rapid on-site disease diagnosis.

  • The uniform and highly smooth nanofibers of biocompatible poly(${\varepsilon}$-caprolactone) (PCL) composited with different contents of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were successfully prepared by electrospinning. Experimental parameters were MWCNTs addition to a PCL solution and applied voltages. The topographical features of the composite nanofibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and its electrical properties were measured by a four-point probe method. The surface resistance gradually decreased with an increasing content of MWCNTs in PCL fibers because of the excellent electrical conductivity of MWCNTs. The nanofiber diameter could be regulated by varying the solution viscosity and voltages. Our results establish that this kind of electrospinning PCL/MWCNTs nanofibers with the control of fiber diameter and electrical conductivity may be a promising candidate for the application of scaffolds in tissue engineering.

  • The main goal of the coordinated project development of therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals of Y-90 and Re-188 is to exploit advancements in radionuclide production technology. Here, direct and indirect production methods with medium reactor and cyclotron are compared to evaluate derived neutron flux and production yield. First, nano-sized 186W and 89Y specimens are suspended in water in a quartz vial by FLUKA simulation. Then, the solution is irradiated for 4 days under 9E+14 n/cm2/s neutron flux of reactor. Also, a neutron activator including three layers-lead moderator, graphite reflector, and polyethylene absorbent- is simulated and tungsten target is irradiated by 60 MeV protons of cyclotron to generate induced neutrons for 188W and 90Sr production via neutron capture. As the neutron energy reduced, the flux gradually increased towards epithermal range to satisfy (n/2n,γ) reactions. The obtained specific activities at saturation were higher than the reported experimental values because the accumulated epithermal flux and nano-sized specimens influence the outcomes. The beta emitters, which are widely utilized in brachytherapy, appeal an alternative route to locally achieve a rational yield. Therefore, the proposed method via neutron activator may ascertain these broad requirements.

  • The rheological properties of highly concentrated Ag nano sol depending on particle size were studied. The Ag nano sol was prepared by reducing the Ag ion in aqueous solution. The size of Ag nano particle was controlled by two steps of nucleation and growth, and the thickness of adsorption layer was varied by molecular weight of polyelectrolytes. The polyelectrolytes acted as not only ionic complex agent in ionic state and but also dispersant after formation of Ag nano sol. The effective volume was controlled by combination of varying the molecular weight of polyelectrolytes and the size Ag nano sol. The particle size and the viscosity of nano sol were characterized by particle size analyzer, HR-TEM and cone & plate viscometer. It was found that the 10 nm and 40 nm-sized Ag nano sols were prepared by controlling the nucleation and growth steps, respectively. Finally, we could prepare highly concentrated Ag nano sol over 50 wt%.
