  • A technique for measuring the thermal diffusivity of nanofluids is proposed in this study. In theory, it has been well known that the transient hot-wire method can be used to measure the thermal conductivity and diffusivity of fluids simultaneously. However, when traditional methods were employed, the accuracy of the calculated thermal conductivity was considerably higher than that of diffusivity. The proposed method has two advantages for practical use: it only needs a simple data-conversion process for calculating the diffusivity, and it can skip the tedious calibration process involved in the case of a wire sensor. A validation experiment for the new system has been performed with the basic fluids, and the comparison experiment to compare the change in diffusivity of the base oil and the change in diffusivity of the nano oil has been carried out. It is expected that the present system will provide numerous methods for investigating the variation in the thermal properties other than thermal conductivity.

  • Hydrated liquid crystalline vesicles containing a high content of ceramide were prepared by constituting an optimal composition in which ceramides can be mutually self-associated with phospholipid and cholesterol. From the result of manufacturing various vesicles with different component composition, when the edge activator sodium deoxycholate (SDOC) and the solubilizer PEG-60 hydrogenated castor oil (HCO 60) were mixed to form vesicles, the smallest nano-sized particles were produced and the vesicle dispersion solution was weakly acidic and maintained the most stable state. In addition, it was confirmed through polarized light microscopy and thermal analysis that the addition of SDOC and HCO 60 had an effect on the inhibition of crystallinity of lipid components such as ceramide. The stability of the vesicle dispersion solution was maintained without change in appearance and viscosity even after long-term storage at high temperature for eight weeks.

  • This study examined the convective heat transfer characteristics of nanofluids flowing over a heated fine wire. Convective heat transfer coefficients were measured for four different nano-engine-oil samples under three different temperature boundary conditions, i.e., both or either variation of wire and fluid temperature and constant film temperature. Experimental investigations that the increase in the convective heat transfer coefficients of nanofluids in the internal pipe flow often exceeded the increase in thermal conductivity were recently published; however, the current study did not confirm these results. Analyzing the behavior of the convective heat transfer coefficient under various temperature conditions was a useful tool to explain the relation between the thermal conductivity and the boundary layer thickness of nanofluids.

  • Interest and demand for hydrogen sensors are increasing in the field of H2 leakage detection during storage/transport/use and detection of H2 dissolved in transformer oil for safety issues as well as in the field of breath analysis for non-invasively diagnosing a number of disease states for a healthy life. In this study, various ZnO-based sensors were synthesized by controlling the reduction in crystallite size, decoration of Pt nanoparticles, doping of electron donating atoms, and doping of various atoms with different ionic radii. The sensing response of the various prepared ZnO-based nanoparticles and quantum dots (QDs) for 10 ppm H2 was investigated. Among the samples, the smallest-sized (3.5 nm) In3+-doped ZnO QDs showed the best sensing response, which is superior to those in previously reported hydrogen sensors based on semiconducting metal oxides. The higher sensing response of In-doped ZnO QDs is attributed to the synergic effects of the increased number of oxygen vacancies, higher optical band gap, and larger specific surface area.

  • The electrorheoloRical (ER) fluids are composed of a colloidal dispersion of polarizable particles in insulating oil, and it's the rheological property changes by the applied electric field. These changed are reversible and occur fast within a fewmilliseconds. The ER properties of the ER fluid such as increment of viscosity and yield stress come from the particle chain structure induced by electric fleld. When formulating the ER fluid for a speciflc application, some requirement must besatisfled, which are high yield stress under electric field, rapid response, and dispersion stability. While this characteristic makes valuable ER fluids in valious industrial applications, their lung term and quiescent application has been limited because ofproblems with particle sedimentation. In an effort to overcome sedimentation problem of ER fluids, the anhydrous ER materials of monodispersed hollow polyaniline (PANI) and adipate derivative respectively with submicron-sized suspension providing wide operating temperature range and other advantage were synthesized in a four-step procedure. The ER fluidswere characterized by FT-lR, TGA, DLS, SEM, and TEM. Stability of the suspensions was examined by an UV spectroscopy. The rheological and electrical properties of the suspension were investigated Couette-type rheometer with a high voltagegenerator, current density, and conductivity. And the behavior of ER suspensions was observed by a video camera attached toan optical microscope under 3kV/mm. The suspensions showed good ER properties, durability, and particle dispersion.

  • The objective of this study is to prepare a stable delivery systems containing polyethoxylated retinamide(PERA) - derivatives of retinoic acid, effective anti-wrinkle and anti-acne agent. Cubic liquid crystalline phase gel (CLCPG) and cubosomes containing various concentrations of PERA were prepared to investigate the physicochemical properties. Furthermore, stability and transdermal absorption efficacy of the CLCPG containing PERA were investigated in comparison with oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions which are predominantly used as a topical formulation. CLCPG increase the stability of PERA in comparison with O/W emulsion. For tropical application, CLCPG containing PERA shows higher moisturizing effect than that of O/W emulsion. In skin permeation test, CLCPG shows higher PERA deposit on epidermis. With its specific physicochemical property caused by the glyceryl oleate, CLCPG itself could be used for stabilizer of various actives and applied as an effective delivery system for topical application. Cubosome, nano-sized dispersed CLCPG, is also expected to be applied in a various field of industry like food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

  • Purpose: To improve the quality of basic gluten-free rice bread composed of white rice flour, salt, sugar, yeast, skim milk powder, olive oil, and water, the effects of transglutaminase (TGase), whey protein (WP), propylene glycol alginate (PGA), and hydroxypropylmethylcelluose (HPMC) were investigated. Methods: TGase, WP, PGA, and HPMC were added to rice flour cumulatively. The pasting properties of rice flour blends as well as volume, shape, color value, textural properties and sensory evaluation of basic rice bread (RB1) RB1+TGase (RB2), RB1+TGase+WP (RB3), RB1+TGase+WP+PGA (RB4), and RB1+TGase+WP+PGA+HPMC (RB5) were compared. Results: Consistency of rice batter increased upon addition of TGase, WP and PGA, and RB3 and RB4 had higher specific volumes than others. PGA improved volume, crumb air cell uniformity, and resilience but lowered elasticity and moistness of RB. HPMC increased, hardness, moistness and softness, and slightly reduced volume. Conclusion: Therefore, it is suggested that hydrocolloids, PGA and HPMC may be necessary to improve volume, crumb structure, textural properties and overall eating quality of gluten-free rice bread.

  • Solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) have been regarded to behave similar to the vegetable oil emulsions because emulsions of lipid melts are formed before lipid droplets being solidified to turn into SLNs. Compared to lipid emulsion, however, it has been more difficult to obtain stable SLNs and needs more extensive considerations on stabilizer and manufacturing process. In the present study, we tried to prepare phosphatidylcholine-based trymyristin (TM) SLNs using high pressure homogenization method and optimize the manufacturing variables such as homogenization pressure, number of homogenization cycles, cooling temperature, co-stabilizer and freeze-drying with cryoprotectants. Nano-sized TM particles could be Prepared using egg Phosphatidylcholine and pegylated phospholipids ($PEG_{2000}$PE) as stabilizers. Based on the optimization study, the dispersion was manufactured by homogenization under the pressure of 100 MPa for more than 5 cycles, and solidifying the intermediately formed lipid melt droplets by dipping in liquid nitrogen followed by thawing at room temperature. In addition, TM SLNs could be freeze-dried and then redispersed easily without significant particle size changes after freeze drying with 10% and 12.5% sucrose or trehalose. The TM SLNs established in this study can be used as delivery system for drugs and cosmetics.

  • Effective use of available energy sources is of general concern along with the issues of global warming and unstable oil price. As one of the effort to recover waste heat from industrial facilities effectively, researchers have interest in a technology called organic Rankine cycle(ORC), in which the working fluid is some organic liquid instead of water. Known to have poor efficiency already, this old technology is considered to give an innovative solution to utilizing low grade energy sources, by improving the efficiency. Nano fluidics, coatings and the use of additives are the examples of these efforts. In the present study, we present simulated performance of a horizontal tube type condenser geometry. N-hexanr and isopentane are compared to water vapor case under 1 atm and the inet cooling water temperature of $20^{\circ}C$. EES(Engineering Equations Solver) is used for the present work.
