In this work, AlON-$Al_2O_3$ coatings were prepared on Al2021 alloy by the electrolytic plasma processing (EPP) method. The experimental electrolytes include: 2 g/l NaOH as the electrolytic conductive agent, 10 g/l $Na_2AlO_2$ as the alumina formative agent, and 0.5 g/l $NaNO_2$, $NaNO_3$, and $NH_4NO_3$ as the nitride inducing agents. The effects of different nitrogen inducing agents were studied by a combined compositional and structural analyses of the ceramic coatings carried out by Xray diffractometry (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for the specimens EPP-treated at room temperature for 15 min under a hybrid voltage of 260 DC along with an AC 50 Hz power supply (200 V). Microhardness tests and wear tests were carried out to correlate the evolution of the microstructure and the resulting mechanical properties. Potentiodynamic polarizations and immersion corrosion tests were carried out in 3.5wt% NaCl water solutions under static conditions in order to evaluate the corrosion behavior of the coated samples. The results demonstrate that $NaNO_2$ is proven to be a good nitrogen inducing agent to produce high quality AlON-$Al_2O_3$ ceramic coatings.

We have demonstrated that textured $Al_2O_3-mullite-SiC$ nanocomposites can be fabricated by slip casting followed by partial oxidation - reaction sintering of mixed suspensions of $Al_2O_3$ and SiC powders in a high magnetic field. The sintered density was changed by the degree of oxidation at 1200C and 1300C. The degree of orientation of alumina in the nanocomposite was examined on the basis of the X-ray diffraction patterns and scanning electron micrographs. It is confirmed that alumina-oriented nanocomposites were fabricated. The three-point bending strength at room temperature was observed for the nanocomposites.

Aluminum nitride was synthesized using a carbothermal method from mesoporous alumina having a high surface area (> $1,000m^2/g$) as an aluminum source and CNTs (carbon nano tubes) as a carbon source. In this case the mesoporous alumina was used as the starting material instead of ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ with the expectation that the mesopores in mesoporous alumina act as channels for N2 gas and elimination of CO generated as by-product. It is also expected that the synthetic temperature should be lower compared to the use of ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ as a starting material due to its high surface area. The crystallinity of the produced aluminum nitride was studied by XRD and FT-IR, and the microstructure was investigated by FE-SEM. Also the purity of the aluminum nitride was analyzed through N/O determinator and ICP analysis.
Nano-sized a-alumina with a narrow distribution was prepared by using Flame Spray Pyrolysis (FSP). The microemulsion of water in oil (W/O) was prepared to make ultrafine droplets for FSP process. Kerosene (fuel) as a continuos phase and Al(NO$_3$)$_3$$.$9$H_2O$ (oxidizer) aqueous solution as a dispersed phase were prepared for microemulsification. The microemulsion with dispersion stability was obtained by adjusting the composition of 80 vol% kerosene, 10 vol% aqueous solution, and 10 vol% emulsifying agent. Microemulsion was sprayed onto the flame by using two-fluid nozzle spray gun under the condition of 0.03 ㎫ air pressure. The synthesized products were $\alpha$-alumina phase with the size of 20 to 30 nm.

In this study, nanoscale Al2O3 ceramic particles were used due its exceptionally high hardness characteristics, chemical stability, and wear resistance properties. These nanoparticles will be used to investigate the optimal process conditions for the electro co-deposition of the Ni-Al2O3 composite coatings. A Watts bath electrolytic solution of a controlled composition along with a fixed agitation speed was used for this study. Whereas the current density, the pH value, temperature and concentration of the nano Al2O3 particles of the electrolyte were designated as the manipulative variables. The experimental design method was based on the orthogonal array to find the optimum processing parameters for the electro co-deposition of Ni-Al2O3 composite coatings. The result of confirmation experimental based on the optimal processing condition through the analysis of variance ; EDX analysis found that the ratio of alumina increased to 8.65 wt.% and subsequently the overall hardness increased to 983 Hv. Specially, alumina were evenly distributed on Nickel matrix and particles were embedded more firmly and finely in Nickel matrix.
Nanostructured Cu-$Al_2O_3$ composite powders were synthesized by thermochemical process. The synthesis procedures are 1) preparation of precursor powder by spray drying of solution made from water-soluble copper and aluminum nitrates, 2) air heat treatments to evaporate volatile components in the precursor powder and synthesis of nano-structured CuO + $Al_2O_3$, and 3) CuO reduction by hydrogen into pure Cu. The suggested procedures stimulated the formation of the gamma-$Al_2O_3$, and different alumina formation behaviors appeared with various heat treating temperatures. The mean particle size of the final Cu/$Al_2O_3$ composite powders produced was 20 nm, and the electrical conductivity and hardness in the hot-extruded bulk were competitive with Cu/$Al_2O_3$ composite by the conventional internal oxidation process.

In this research, some mechanical properties of Al2O3-based composites containing nanoSiC and nanoMgO additives, including elasticity modulus, hardness, and fracture toughness, have been evaluated. Micron-sized Al2O3 powders containing 0.08 wt.% nanoMgO particles have been mixed with different volume fractions of nanoSiC particles (2.5 to 15 vol.%). Untreated samples have been sintered by using hot-press technique at temperatures of 1600 to 1750℃. The results show significant increases in the mechanical characteristics with increases in the sintering temperature and amount of nanoSiC particles, with the result that the elasticity modulus, hardness, and fracture toughness were obtained as 426 GPa, 21 GPa, and 4.5 MPa.m1/2, respectively.
The dependence of the IR optical properties of PMMA/$Al_2O_3$ nanocomposite on the alumina content was investigated in the wavelength range of $3500-2800cm^{-1}$. The samples were prepared via emulsion polymerization technique using oleic acid as a coupling agent. Grafting density calculations were carried out by means of elemental analysis CHN to yield the best coupling agent content. FTIR analysis confirmed the existence of a chemical bond between aluminum oxide and oleic acid. The outcomes of XRD analyses showed the presence of cubic gamma aluminum oxide in the nanocomposite, in contrast to the amorphous nature of PMMA. TEM images showed the core-shell morphology of the particles other than pristine PMMA. Optical constants of the nanocomposite were calculated based on FTIR spectra and the Kramers-Kronig equations. The presence of nano alumina modified some of the optical indexes in IR region.

Optical amplificator have been used to compensate the losses in the optical signal transmission and processing. Today, there has been increasing demand for the very low cost optical amplifier. Sol-gel offers considerable potential both low cost manufacture, and for great flexibility in materials composition and structure. In addition, the sol-gel process is a very attractive method for producing porous materials with controlled structure. In this work, we present the potoluminescence properties of Er doped A1$_2$O$_3$/SiO$_2$ films. Erbium doped alumina nano sol was prepared by Al(NO$_3$)$_3$.9$H_2O$ and Er(NO$_3$)$_3$.5$H_2O$ through hydrolysis and peptization, and then GPS (3-Glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane) was added into Er doped alumina nano sol for organic- inorganic hybridization. Er doped A1$_2$O$_3$/SiO$_2$ film was obtained by spin coating, dip coating and thermal treatment from 30$0^{\circ}C$~120$0^{\circ}C$, and there were crack-free after thermal treatment. The thickness of film was measured SEM, and the porosity of film was characterized by BET and TGA. The crystal phase of Er doped A1$_2$O$_3$/SiO$_2$ were determined by XRD. Finally, the photoluminescence properties of Er doped A1$_2$O$_3$/SiO$_2$ films will be discuss with the consideration of porosity and crystallity.

Composite ceramics of alumina-TZP(3Y) have good mechanical and electrical properties. So, They have been used as high strength refractory materials and thick film substrates, etc. In this study, Composite ceramics of alumina-TZP(3Y) were fabricated by uniaxial pressing and sintering at 1,400, 1,500, and $1,600^{\circ}C$, and their microstructures and mechanical properties were investigated. As the TZP(3Y) content in composite ceramics increases from 20 wt.% to 80 wt.%, the fracture toughness increases monotonically, which seems to be related to the higher relative density and/or toughening mechanism by means of stabilized tetragonal zirconia phase at room temperature. In contrast to the fracture toughness, Vickers hardness of the composite ceramics shows maximum value (1,938 Hv) at a 40 wt.% of TZP(3Y). The result of Vickers hardness is likely to be due to more dense sintered microstructure of composite ceramics than pure alumina and reinforcement of composite ceramics with TZP(3Y), considering that Vickers hardness of pure $Al_2O_3$ is greater than that of TZP(3Y). It is also shown that the $ZrO_2$ particles are $l^{\circ}Cated$ between $Al_2O_3$ grains and suppress grain growth each other.
