  • $Mg(OH)_2$ particles were prepared by precipitation and a hydrothermal treatment to examine the effect of $MgCl_2$ concentration, alkali type and concentration, temperature, hydrothermal treatment on the formation of $Mg(OH)_2$ particles using full factorial design, as one of DOE (Design of experiment) methods. The primary particle size is similar to the secondary particle size for the samples after the hydrothermal treatment, where the average particle size of $Mg(OH)_2$ increased with increasing the concentration of $MgCl_2$ and hydrothermal temperature and decreasing alkali/Mg molar ratio. On the other hand, for the samples prepared from precipitation, the secondary particle size is larger than the primary particles due to aggregation. The difference in alkaline source is that the particles prepared from $NH_4OH$ exhibit the larger size with better dispersion than those from NaOH. Low density polyethylene and ethylene-co-vinyl acetate (LDPE-EVA) resin composed of the smaller secondary particle size of $Mg(OH)_2$ shows a higher limited oxygen index (LOI) at 50 and 55% loading, but the smaller primary particle size may result in a better grade in UL-94 tests. At the high loading of 60%, all samples with any preparation methods exhibit V-0 grade but the LOI value depends on not only primary particle size but also dispersion state.

  • $Al(OH)_3$ is added to the silicone rubber for improvement of its resistance against surface discharge. In this paper, four kinds of $Al(OH)_3$ were added to the SIR during compounding. SIR was deteriorated by a corona treatment. Hydrophobicity recovery rate after corona treatment and arc resistance of SIR were investigated. Hydrophobicity recovery rate of SIR was evaluated by the measurement of contact angle. Arc resistance was evaluated by measuring weight loss of SIR after arc resistance test.

  • Background : The aim of the present study was to identify an effective physicochemical control method to reduce Fusarium species infestation in adlay (Coix lacryma-jobi L.) before and after harvesting. Methods and Results : We observed that prochloraz emusifiable concentrate and hexaconazol prochloraz emusifiable concentrate strongly inhibited the mycelial growth of 10 Fusarium species. Strong growth inhibitions and cell lysis were observed following treatment with 4% NaOCl solution. The total number of fungi detected were lower follwing treatment with thiophanatemethyl triflumizole wettable powder ($1.1{\times}10^4CFU/g$), hexaconazol prochloraz emulsifiable concentrate ($1.2{\times}10^4CFU/g$), carboxin thiram dustable powder ($1.6{\times}10^4CFU/g$) and prochloraz emulsifiable concentrate ($1.7{\times}10^4CFU/g$) than in the non-treated control ($7.7{\times}10^4CFU/g$). The reduction of Fusarium fungi varies with the concentration and soaking time of NaOCl solution. Fungal detection was not observed after soaking in NaOCl solution for 24 h and harmful effects were not observed for plant growth by NaOCl after soacking for 6 - 12 h. Conclusion : Soaking seed for 6 - 12 h in 4% NaOCl could be an effective method of disinfectant treatment for the control of Fusarium fungi in adlay seeds.

  • Using a Pinus koraiensis and Pinus rigida which are normally being discarded in South Korea, optimal conditions of producing activated carbons have been studied to recycle as a higher value-added product. This study consists of two processes, the production process of charcoals from waste timbers by low temperature pyrolysis and the production process of activated carbons from the charcoals by chemical activation reaction. This paper deals with the production process of activated carbons from the charcoals by chemical activation reaction. As an alkali has been generally used as an activating agent, KOH and NaOH which react well with a carbon were used in this study. As a result of the experiments, it is confirmed that activated carbons made with KOH treatment had superior values in physicochemical properties to NaOH, showing that there was no remain of KOH at the surface of the charcoals while there was $3{\sim}4%$ of NaOH remaining after the experiments. Thus, it is concluded that KOH reacted more actively with a charcoal than NaOH. Moreover, it was also found that values in physicochemical properties when using a Pinus koraiensis are superior to the ones when using a Pinus rigida. The optimal mixing ratio of an activating agent to a charcoal was 400 wt.%. To improve the physicochemical properties, activated carbons were washed out by distilled water after neutralization with SM hydrochloric acid solution. When activated carbons were produced from a Pinus koraiensis in this optimal conditions, value of BET surface area was found to be approx. $2400\;m^2/g$.

  • The crystalline character of NaOH and KOH-cellulose complex having different tension ratio was studied using X-ray diffraction analysis. Cellulose crystalline lattices in tension alkali treatment cotton were identified by measuring and indexing the 101, 101, and 002 reflections. According as alkali treatment tension ratio increased on, cellulose gave rise to the formation of I rather than cellulose II. It seemed that a part of the fine structure of cellulose increased orientation with antiparaell and parallel chain crystal structure. The high tension ratio alkali treatment cotton resulted in lower dye sorption and in higher breaking strength and crease recovery.

  • A hydrothermal process was used to synthesize dioctahedral smectite from dickite [$A1_2$$Si_2$$O_{5}$ $(OH)_4$], Dickite was previously activated by heating at $800^{\circ}C$ far 4 hours with $Na_2$$CO_3$. After the heat-treatment, $SiO_2$ was added for stoichiometry, The autoclaving was carried out in closed stainless steel vessel (about 1 liter) at the condition of various temperature, pressure, time etc. High quality smectite could be obtaind by heating at $290^{\circ}C$ under the pressure of 60 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ for 48 hours. This experiment reveals that pH of the solution was an important factor and should be maintained at 10 to 11 for the formation of dioctahedral smectite. The synthesized smectite was identified as Na-beidellite by the treatment of ethylene glycol and Greene-Kelly test.

  • Cellular senescence causes cell cycle arrest and promotes permanent cessation of proliferation. Since the senescence of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) reduces proliferation and multipotency and increases immunogenicity, aged MSCs are not suitable for cell therapy. Therefore, it is important to inhibit cellular senescence in MSCs. It has recently been reported that metabolites can control aging diseases. Therefore, we aimed to identify novel metabolites that regulate the replicative senescence in MSCs. Using a fecal metabolites library, we identified nervonic acid (NA) as a candidate metabolite for replicative senescence regulation. In replicative senescent MSCs, NA reduced senescence-associated 𝛽-galactosidase positive cells, the expression of senescence-related genes, as well as increased stemness and adipogenesis. Moreover, in non-senescent MSCs, NA treatment delayed senescence caused by sequential subculture and promoted proliferation. We confirmed, for the first time, that NA delayed and inhibited cellular senescence. Considering optimal concentration, duration, and timing of drug treatment, NA is a novel potential metabolite that can be used in the development of technologies that regulate cellular senescence.

  • Effects of alkali swelling of HwBKP (hardwood bleached kraft pulp) at a low concentration below 2 percent (based on the oven-dried weight of pulp) on handsheet properties were investigated. Swelling treatment of HwBKP was performed at various low NaOH concentrations with/without beating. Then, the changes in handsheet properties were evaluated in terms of bulk, optical and strength properties. It was found that bulk was slightly increased when the alkali concentration was increased. When the pulp was only swollen without beating, paper optical and strength properties was slightly decreased or not changed with alkali concentration. When the pulp was alkali-swollen after beating, paper strength and opacity showed almost no changes while brightness was increased. When the pulp was beaten after NaOH swelling, alkali concentration showed almost no effect on brightness and opacity of paper. Paper strength was slightly decreased with alkali concentration, suggesting that alkali pretreatment before refining could adversely affect refining efficiency.

  • The study was performed to investigate the biological activity of Enteromorpha intestinalis. In order to examine its blood anti-coagulant effects, Enteromorpha intestinalis was extracted with cold water, methanol, hot water, HCl and NaOH. In general, the alkali extract of Enteromorpha intestinalis was approximately 17 times stronger than the control. The anti-cancer effects of select extracts(methanol, hot water, 0.1 N NaOH, 1 N NaOH) were determined in human melanoma cells(Bl6/F10), fibrosarcoma cells(HTl080) and breast cancer cells(MCF7) by MTT assay. With the treatment of 250 ${\mu}g/m{\ell}$ of methanol extracts. HT1080, B16/F10 and MCF7 cell viabilities significantly decreased to 8.06%, 3.62% and 10.10%, respectively. Thus these results strongly support the possibie use of Enteromorpha intestinalis as a functional materials.

  • This study, which was tarried out to investigate the characteristics of permeation rates and fouling phenomena in drinking-water treating processes with MF membrane, showed that pressure drop was dependent on the length of membrane module and operating pressure; the pressure drop increased with the length of membrane module and operating pressure, operation at a relatively low pressure(0.5kg/$cm^2$) is better than that at a relatively (2.0kg/$cm^2$), since high operating pressure accelerates the clogging. In case of out-in permeation type, almost same flux was obtained after a certain operating time regardless of membrane length and operating pressure. In order to understand, the microbial fouling, chemical cleaning was carried out to the forced contaminated hollow-fiber membrane with chemicals($H_2O_2$, NaOCl, and NaOH). Chemical cleanings with $H_2O_2$and NaOCl, which are oxidizing agents, are better for sterilizing and desorbing the microbes than those with NaOH.
