Hydrolysis of soda-lime waste glass was investigated to test the feasibility for use of waste glass as feed material in the production of foamed glass. The soda-lime glass, such as plate glass and various bottle glasses, was effectively hydrolyzed by steam and water under high pressure. The proper condition for the hydrolysis was found to be reaction temperature of $250^{\circ}C$ and reaction time of 2 h. Under this condition, the water content of hydrated glass through hydrolysis was 7.85~10.04%, allowing successful foaming process for production of foamed glass. Using Na as the modifying agent of glass was effective in the hydrolysis by water. The highest water content of hydrated glass was obtained when weight ratio of NaOH to the glass was 0.04.

Dissolving part of xylan and lignin in lignocellulosic biomass by base can be used as pretreatment technique. Cork oak was pretreated with sodium hydroxide solution and the pretreatment effects were evaluated with two critical factors - NaOH concentration and pretreatment temperature. Some of xylan and lignin were removed by base pretreatment. At $90^{\circ}C$ and 13% NaOH pretreatment, 22.0% of lignin and 78.8% of xylan removed by base treatment. Enzymatic hydrolysis of cork oak which was pretreated at higher temperature or concentration was further improved. After pretreatment of cork oak with 13% NaOH at $90^{\circ}C$, the conversion rate of cellulose to fermentable sugars were reached up to 91.3%. At ethanol fermentation with enzymatic hydrolysate from different pretreatment conditions, all enzymatic saccharification liquids were well fermented by Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
Co/Al2O3 nanopowder was used as a catalyst to investigate the effect of catalyst support, reduction temperature, sodium borohydride (NaBH4) concentration, sodium hydroxide (NaOH) concentration, and reaction temperature on the characteristics of NaBH4 hydrolysis. The Co/Al2O3 nanopowder showed a high catalytic activity among various catalysts. Catalyst reduction at 250℃ exhibited a relatively good activity. The activity decreased with an increase in the NaBH4 concentration. Conversely, the activity increased and then decreased with an increase in the NaOH concentration. Additionally, the activity increased with an increase in the reaction temperature. The value of apparent activation energy was 40.81 kJ/mol, which was lower than the other Co-based catalysts. Thus, Co/Al2O3 nanopowder catalyst can be widely used for NaBH4 hydrolysis owing to its superior catalytic activity.
In order to give a silk-like touch to PET fabrics, the PET fabrics were treated with NaOH alkaline solution in various conditions. In alkaline treatment, the liquor flow type pilot weight reduction apparatus with magnetostrictive ultrasonic transducer was used for the study. The weight loss of PET fabrics hydrolyzed in 4% and 6% NaOH solution, at $95^\circ{C}$ and $99^\circ{C}$ for 60min. with ultrasonic application showed 3.7~4.6% higher than that of treated fabric without ultrasonic application. From the difference of specific weight loss, the treatment condition of the maximum of hydrolyzation effect appeared at $95^\circ{C}$ in $4^\circ{C}$ and at $90^\circ{C}$ in 6% NaOH solution, respectively. During the alkali hydrolysis of PET fabrics, the decomposition rate constant(k) increased exponentially with the treatment temperature and were not related with ultrasonic cavitation. The activation energy$(E_a)$ in decomposition of PET fabrics were 21.06kcal/mol with ultrasonic application and 21.10kcal/mol without ultrasonic application. The ultrasonic application gave a little higher value of the activation entropy$(\Delta{S}^\neq)$ and a little lower value of Gibbs free energy$(\Delta{S}^\neq)$ compared with not used ultrasonic apparatus.
Alkaline treatment gives Sea-Island type yam to produce microfiber and silk-like touch. But this treatment have some problems in dyeing and finishing process. To solve some problem occurred in dyeing and finishing of polyester fabric, the ultrasonic treatment technique was used recently. This study was carried out to confirm the effect of the ultrasonic treatment on alkaline weight loss finishing of polyester fiber under general alkaline treatment conditions; NaOH concentration 2, 3, 4, and 5%, treatment time 5, 10, 15, and 20 minutes, treatment temperature 70, 80, 90, and 99'E, respectively. On the other hand, the three way lay out method was used to test of significant obtained data from alkaline treatment. It was found that weight loss increased with increasing the NaOH concentration, temperature, and time. Also, in case of PET/Co-PET fabrics by ultrasonic, weight loss and dissolution of microfiber were superior to PET/Co-PET fabrics without ultrasonic. Tensile strength and modulus decreased with increasing NaOH concentrations and hydrolysis time. Therefore, the effect of alkali hydrolysis by ultrasonic application was better than that of the conventional method.

A procedure for the surface hydrolysis of an electrospun poly(${\epsilon}$-caprolactone) (PCL) fibrous scaffold was developed to enhance the adhesion and proliferation of osteoblasts. The surface hydrolysis of fibrous scaffolds was performed using NaOH treatment for the formation of carboxyl groups on the fiber surfaces. The hydrolysis process did not induce deformation of the fibers, and the fibers retained their diameter. The cell seeding density on the NaOH-treated PCL fibrous scaffolds was more pronounced than on the non-treated PCL fibers used as a control. The alkaline phosphatase activity, osteocalcin and a mineralization assay strongly supported that the surface-hydrolyzed PCL fibrous scaffolds provided more favorable environments for the proliferation and functions of osteoblasts compared to the non-treated PCL fibrous scaffolds use as a control.
The hydrolysis of gallium(III) has been studied using potentiometric techniques under physiological conditions of temperature 37 C and ionic strength 0.15 moldm-3 NaCl and at different metal ion concentrations. Changes in pH were monitored with a glass electrode calibrated daily in hydrogen ions concentrations. The titration data within the pH range of 2.5-9.99 were analyzed to determine stability constants of hydroxide species using the SUPERQUAD program. Several different species were considered during the calculation procedure and the following hydroxides have been characterized: Ga(OH)3, Ga(OH)4- Ga3(OH)112-, Ga4(OH)11+ and Ga6(OH)153+. Speciation calculations based on the determined constants were then used to simulate the species distribution.
Sodium borohydride, NaBH4, has many advantages as hydrogen source for portable proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). When PEMFC is used outdoors as a transport type, it is economical to hydrolyze NaBH4 using fresh water instead of distilled water. Therefore, in this study, hydrogen was generated using fresh water instead of distilled water during the NaBH4 hydrolysis process. The properties of NaBH4 hydrolysis were studied using an activated carbon-supported Co-P-B/C catalyst. Fresh water did not generate tetrahydrate during the NaBH4 hydrolysis process, and distilled water produced tetrahydrate by-products, which consumed a lot of water during the hydrolysis process, indicating that at the end of the reaction at a high concentration of 25% or more of NaBH4, dry by-products and unreacted NaBH4 remained. As a result, when fresh water was used, the hydrogen yield and hydrogen generation rate were higher than that of distilled water at a high concentration of 25% or more of NaBH4, indicating that it is suitable for use in transport-type fuel cells such as unmanned aerial vehicles.

To examine the possibility of protein recycling of shaving scraps containing chromium generated from manufacturing process of leather, the optimum hydrolysis conditions and the withdrawal methods of low molecular weight protein for using the liquid fertilizer sources by investigation of solubilities of hydrolyzed protein, inorganic nutrients contents and molecular weight distributions of hydrolyzed protein from shaving scraps treated with mixed alkaline inducing agents and mixed alkaline proteolytic enzymes including MgO were investigated. In hydrolysis of shaving scraps treated with mixed alkaline inducing agents, the solubility of shaving scraps were clearly different with 65~85% according to the sorts of the inducing agents, and the degree of hydrolysis was high in the order of NaOH, $Ca(OH)_2$ and KOH. The average molecular weights of withdrawal hydrolyzed protein were 10, 40 and 80 KD treated with NaOH, $Ca(OH)_2$ and KOH, respectively. And the chromium contents was about 15 ppm. In hydrolysis of shaving scraps treated with mixed alkaline proteolytic enzymes, the bility of shaving scraps were high in the order of alcalase, esperase and savinase. In c of treating 0.5% alcalase, the low molecular weight of hydrolyzed protein could be withdrawn. The solubility of the hydrolyzed protein was about 85%, the average molecular weight of the protein was below 1 KD and chrome content of the protein was below 10 ppm.
Neutral salts have negative or positive effects on the rates of many chemical reactions and also on the rates of acidic and alkaline hydrolysis of carboxylic esters. The direction of neutral salt effects on the hydrolysis of ester depends on the charge of esters. Neutral salts accelerate alkaline hydrolysis of esters with negative charge, but decelerate alkaline hydrolysis of esters with positive charge, and have little effect on the alkaline hydrolysis of neutral esters. It is expected that the rate of the alkaline hydrolysis of Poly(ethylene terephthalte) (PET), polymeric solid carboxylic polyester with carboxyl end group at the polymer end, is also influenced positively by neutral salts. In the present work, to clarify the mechanism of the neutral salt effect on the alkaline hydrolysis of PET, many salts with different anions like NaF, NACl, NaBr, NaI were added to the aqueous alkaline solutions. Then PET was hydrolyzed with aqueous solutions of many salts in alkali metal hydroxides under various conditions. Some conclusions obtained from the experimental results were summarized as follows. The reaction rate of the alkaline hydrolysis of PET was increased by the addition of neutral salts and In k was increased nearly linearly with the square root of ionic strength of reaction medium. This fact suggested that the ionic strength effect by Debye-Huckel and Bronsted theory was exerted on the reaction. The specific salt effect was also observed. The reaction rate was increased with the decrease in the nucleophilicity of anions of neutral salts, i.e., in the order of $F^-$ <$Cl^-$<$Br^-$<$I^-$. It was thought that the reaction rate was increased in the order of $F^-$ <$Cl^-$<$Br^-$<$I^-$. because the completion of anions with $OH^-$ for carbonyl carbon became weaker with the decrease in the nucleophilicity and with the increase in the size of anions.
