  • Shallow groundwater in rural areas is primarily polluted by agricultural activities. Nitrate-nitrogen is an indicator of artificial pollution. In this study, the hydrochemical characteristics and nitrate-nitrogen pollution of shallow groundwater were examined in two agricultural villages (Hyogyo-ri and Sinan-ri) in Chungcheongnam-do Province, Korea. Physicochemical quality analysis of shallow groundwater and stream water in the field, and chemical analysis in the laboratory were conducted from July 2020 to October 2021. In Hygyo-ri and Sinan-ri villages, shallow groundwater mainly belonged to the Ca-Cl, Ca-H CO3, Na-HCO3, and Na-Cl types, whereas stream water predominantly belonged to the Ca-HCO3 type. The nitrate-nitrogen concentration in shallow groundwater varied depending on the season, displaying an increased concentration of nitrate-nitrogen in the dry season compared to the rainy season. Stream water may be influenced by runoff into villages from the surrounding area, although both shallow groundwater and stream water are affected by artificial pollution. In addition, the nitrate-nitrogen concentration in stream water was lower than that in shallow groundwater.

  • The ionic equilibira in mixed solutions of cuprous and cupric chloride were analyzed by considering chemical equilibria, mass and charge balance equations. The activity coefficients of solutes were calculated by using Bromley equation. Required thermodynamic constants and interaction parameters were evaluated from the data reported in the literature. The effect of NaCl and CuCl concentrations on the pH and potential of the mixed solutions was explained in terms of the variation in the concentration of solutes and in the activity of hydrogen ion. The calculated pH values of the mixed solutions agreed well with the measured values. However, the calculated values for the potential of the mixed solutions were lower than the measured values, indicating the necessity of considering the complex formation between cuprous and chloride ion, such as $Cu^2Cl{_4}^{2-}$ and $Cu_3Cl{_6}^{3-}$.

  • The effects of prolactin and vasopressin on the regulation of amniotic fluid (AF) volume and its $Na^{+}$ concentration $([Na^{+}])$ through the membrane surrounding the AF during increase in AF volume due to fetal urination were studied. About 70% of AF volume was replaced with normal isotonic saline solution. Isotonic saline solution (0.5 ml) containing Censored and LiCl was introduced into each amniotic sac. Vasopressin (25 ng/ml) or prolactin (1 mg/ml) of AF was then injected into experimental amniotic sac. The concentrations of Congored, $Li^{+}$, and $Na^{+}$ were measured at 30 and 60 min intervals after injection. Af samples with decreased Censored concentration ([CR]) during the period of 30 - 60 min were analyzed. The percentage change of $[Na^{+}]$ and the rate of $Li^{+}$ movement during this period were calculated, and the effects of vasopressin and prolactin on them were evaluated. Fellowing results were obtained: 1. The rate of reduction of [CR] in the AF was retarded by vasopressin or prolactin injection. 2. The rate of reduction of $[Li^{+}]$ in the AF was also retarded by vasopressin or prolactin injection. 3. The rate of reduction of $[Li^{+}]$ in the AF was less retarded by vasopressin than that of [CR]. 4. $[Na^{+}]$ changed to approach to the normal level, but this was markedly retarded by prolactin injection. 5. Direction of $Li^{+}$ movement was correlated with the change in $[Na^{+}]$ but it always moved out of the amniotic sac even when the $[Na^{+}]$ increased in vasopressin injected AF. From the above results, it is suggested that vasopressin in the AF triggers the fetus to urinate, and then the membranes surrounding the AF regulate osmolarity by efflux of $Na^{+}$. We suggest that prolactin facilitates water outflow across the amniotic membrane during increase in AF volume, in contrast to a constant volume, whereas regulation of $[Na^{+}]$ is partly restricted by prolactin.

  • In present study, the effects of various factors including the solvent concentration, extraction time and temperature, the ratio of sample vs extraction solvent, (w/v) and pH upon the extractability of the NaCl and alcohol soluble proteins of marine algae were investigated. Eight species of fresh algae, the major ones in consumption as food, namely Porphyra suborbiculata, Undarie pinnatifida, Hizikia fusiforme, Sargassum, fulvellum, Enteromorpha linza, Sargassum kjellmanianum, Codium coarctatum, and Ulva pertusa were used for the extraction of NaCl soluble protein and dried materials of four species, Perphyra suborbiculata, Undaria pinnatifida, Enteromorpha linza and Sargassum fulvellum were used for the extraction of alcohol soluble protein. The frozen and mascerated samples were prepared by the same method described in previous paper (Ryu, 1977). And the dried materials were moistened with alcohol solution before freezing. The effect of solvent concentration on the extractability of NaCl soluble protein differed from species. The extractability of Undaria Pinnatifide, Hizikia fusiforme, Perphyra suborbiculata, Enteromorpha linza, and Ulva pertusa reached maxima at 0.25M NaCl solution while the 1.0M for Sargassum fulvellum, Saygassum kjellmanianum and Codium coarctatum. In case of alcohol soluble proteins, it was shown at $20\%$ ethanol solution for Porphyra suborbiculata, Undaria pinnatifida, Enteromorpha linza, and Sargassum fulvellum. Variation of the ratio of sample vs solvent gave slight effect upon the extractability, but the ratio of 1:30(w/v) seemed most efficient for the extraction of NaCl soluble proteins and 100 ml solvent added to 1 g dried sample was effective in case of alcohol soluble proteins. Extraction time has a minimal effect upon the extraction of alcohol soluble protein, and approximately 21 to $43\%$ of algal protein was extracted within 1 hour. But in case of NaCl soluble protein extraction, the effect of time revealed differently from species to species resulting in that the extraction for 1 hour gave a maximum extractability in Ulva pertusa and Enteromorpha linza, 2 hours in Porphyra suborbiculata, Codium coarctatum and 3 hours in Undaria pinnatifica, Hizikia susiforme, Sargassum fulvellum and Sargassum kjellmanianum. When the NaCl soluble protein of Undaria pinnatifida and Enteromopha linza was extracted at various temperature, the most effective extraction temperature was $40^{\circ}C$ while the temperature was $50^{\circ}C$ for Undaria pinnatifida and $60^{\circ}C$ for Hixikia fusiforme, Sargassum fulvellum, Sargassum kjellmanianum and Codium coarctatum. Bus in case of alcohol soluble extraction, the optimum temperature was $30^{\circ}C$ for Enteromorpha linza and $40^{\circ}C$ for Undaria pinnatifida, Sargassum fulvellum and Porphyra suborbiculata. In the effect of pH on extractability, the maximum extractability of NaCl soluble proteins was obtained at pH 7to 8 and pH 8 to 9 for alcohol soluble protein.

  • Saline conditions invoke oxidative stress attributed to the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Changes in quantum efficiency and antioxidative enzyme activity upon salt treatment were examined in a salt-tolerant plant, Atriplex gmelini, to test the hypothesis that salt tolerance of A. gmelini is due to the increased activity of antioxidative enzymes. A. gmelini showed optimum growth at 100 mM NaCl producing 116% of the shoot dry weight over control plants in 0 mM NaCl treatment. Healthy growth persisted up to 300 mM NaCl treatment maintaining normal internal water content and dry weight. No photochemical stress or damages on antioxidative defense system was obvious in plants of 2 and 4 day salt treatment which was indicated by increased quantum efficiency (Fv/Fm value), decreased stress index (Fo/Fm value), and increased activity of antioxidative enzymes such as SOD, APX, GR. However, the plants treated with 400 mM NaCl showed decrease in growth and in antioxidative enzyme activity although the enzyme activity was still higher than that of the 0 mM NaCl treated plants (l31%, 114%, and 134% of the SOD, APX, and GR activity, respectively). Interestingly, another important antioridative enzyme that scavenges H₂O₂ in plant cells, CAT, showed rapid decrease in its activity as salt concentration increased; 38%, 22%, 15% of the 0 mM NaCl treated plants at 200, 300, 400 mM NaCl treatments, respectively. It appears that the enzymes in ascorbate-glutathione cycle such as APX and GR play the major roles in scavenging ROS produced by salt stress in A. gmelini. After 6 days of salt treatment, the damage in photochemical and antioxidative defense system was indicated by decreased Fv/Fm value and increased Fo/Fm value. A. gmelini appears to cope with short term salt treatment by enhanced activity of the antioxidative defense system, whereas long term stress invoke oxidative stress by increased ROS due to the damages in photochemical and antioxidative system.

  • This study evaluated the evolution stage and origin of chemical components of 12 boreholes at crystalline bedrock using multivariate statistical and groundwater quality analyses. Groundwater types are mostly belonged to Na(Ca)-$HCO_3$ and Ca-$HCO_3$ types, indicating that directly reaction of cation exchange ($Ca^{2+}{\rightarrow}Na^+$) prevailed. The degree of groundwater evolution is included the range from low to intermediate stage based on field and laboratory analytical conditions. As a result of multivariate statistical analysis, a typical indicator of groundwater contamination, $NO_3$-, has the positive correlation with $Na^+$ and $Cl^-$. The origin of sea spary ($Cl^-$) has the positive correlation with $Na^+$, $SO{_4}^{2-}$, $Mg^{2+}$, and $K^+$, while not correlation with $Ca^{2+}$, $Fe^{2+}$, $HCO_3{^-}$, $F^-$, and $SiO_2$. The concentration of $Cl^-$ and $NO_3{^-}$ belongs to general quality of groundwater and not exceeds over the Korean standard for drinking water. And the negative values of saturation index of minerals are calculated with chemical components in groundwater. Therefore, most of chemical components of groundwater in the study area are originated from natural process between rock and groundwater, whereas some of components are derived from sea spary and anthropogenic sources related to agricultural activities.

  • Electrochemistry of 1.0 mM bis(1,10-phenanthroline)copper(II) $(Cu(ph){_2}^{2+})$ in 100 mM NaCl solution including 27 mM $MgCl_2$ with and without sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is studied. In the presence of SDS, $E_{pa}$ and $E_{1/2}$ of $Cu(ph){_2}^{2+}$ by adding $Mg^{2+}$ shifts to a positive direction compared to the SDS free. The intersection of two lines on ${\Delta}E_p$ vs -log[SDS] plot is determined as a critical micelle concentration (CMC). When $Mg^{2+}$ is added, it seems that the double layer became more compact. And the formation of micelles is retarded.

  • The aim of this study was to measure the suprathreshold taste intensity for NaCl, sucrose, citric acid, and quinine HCl in elderly Korean women using a whole-mouth, sip-and-spit procedure, employing the method of magnitude matching. The results were analysed in terms of aging, menopause, and salivary flow rate. 31 elderly women (mean age; $50.8{\pm}5.1$ years) and 30 young women (mean age; $25.1{\pm}1.71$ years) were included for the study. Subjects were instructed to give nonmodulus magnitude estimates to the intensities of five concentrations each of sucrose, NaCl, citric acid, and quinine HCl; distilled water; 6 loudness level of a 1,000-Hz tone, using the same 9-point intensity scale. Each of the 21 taste stimuli and 6 auditory stimuli are presented in random order twice. The auditory function is used to assess the absolute intensity function of the subject's taste system. The results were as follows; 1. Comparing to young women, elderly women showed decreased taste intensities for lower concentration solutions of NaCl and sucrose. However, other solutions didn't show any difference in taste intensities between young and elderly women. 2. There were not significant difference in perceived taste intensities for NaCl, sucrose, citric acid, and quinine HCl between menopause and pre-menopause women in elderly women group. 3. There were not significant difference in perceived taste intensities for NaCl, sucrose, and quinine HCl between low salivation women and high salivation women in elderly women group. 4. The low salivation women in elderly group showed higher taste intensity for low concentration citric acid than high salivation women.
