This study was performed to assess the influences of liquid pig manure (LPM) on the rice growth and nutrient behavior in soil under two different drainage comditions. Soils of paddy field were Jeonbuk and Gangseo series, and drainage conditions of the soils were imperfectly drained and moderate well drained, respectively, Application of LPM was based on nitrogen, and the treatments included 110 (LPM-N100%), 165 (LPM-N150%) and $220(LPM-N200%)kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$. In the LPM-N150% treatment, rice growth and yield were similar to the control treatment of conventional chemical fertilizer application. Rice yield of moderately well drainedfield were 3-11% higher than that of imperfectly drained field. Loss of nitrogen through $NH_3$ gas after application of LPM was higher in no plowing than in rotary plowing field. Losses of $NO_3-N$, $NH_4-N$, $SO_4$, Ca and K through runoff water were increased as the amount of LPM application increased. Losses of $NO_3-N$ and K through infiltration were higher in LPM-150% and LPM-N200% treatments compared to the chemical fertilizer treatment. Contents of $NO_3-N$ in infiltration water measured from trasplanting to tillering stage was higher at the moderately well drained condition than imperfectly drained condition. Contents of $P_2O_5$ and K in soil were accumulated by application of LPM compared to the chemical fertilizer plot.

Antioxidative capacities of Stachys sieboldii MIQ and 6-year-old ginseng powder were assessed after extraction with 80% ethanol, and their addition effects on quality characteristics of cookies were determined. Stachys sieboldii MIQ showed 3.12-fold higher total phenol content (TPC) and higher antioxidative capacities than ginseng based on higher values of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging capacity, ferric reducing antioxidant capacity, and Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (P<0.05). The 80% ethanol extract was then fractionated with $H_2O$ (Fr. I), 30% (II), 50% (III), 70% (IV), and 100% ethanol (V). Fractions of Stachys sieboldii MIQ extract showed 2.2-fold (Fr. I)~6.1-fold (III) higher TPC and higher antioxidative capacities than ginseng extract fractions. TPC was in the order of fractions III> II> I> IV> V for Stachys sieboldii MIQ extract while in the order of fractions I~III> IV~V for ginseng extract, assuming that Stachys sieboldii MIQ contained more phenolic compounds with higher polarity than ginseng. Addition of 5% and 10% Stachys sieboldii MIQ and ginseng powder increased spread ratio in cookies compared to 100% wheat flour, and 10% addition of Stachys sieboldii MIQ resulted in the darkest and most reddish cookies. In the sensory evaluation, cookies with 5% and 10% Stachys sieboldii MIQ received higher scores for taste preference and higher overall acceptability than ginseng or control cookies. Therefore, powder of Stachys sieboldii MIQ could impart more favorable sensory characteristics as well as higher antioxidative capacity than ginseng in bakery products.
This pot experiment was conducted to find out the optimal fertilization ratio of the cations(K: Ca: Mg) in various soil conditions. Soil samples were collected from uncultivated mountains and hills where development for grass lands is under consideration. The optimum ratios were computed by the Homes systematic variation technique. The results were summarized as follows : 1. The optimum fertilization ratios of the cations (K : Ca : Mg) for the high yields of grass-clover mixed sward at various areas were obtained (Table 4) 2. The relatively high optimum fertilization ratios of K in Daegu and Taegwalryong, Ca in Unbong, and Mg in Cheju district gave the high yields of clover in mixed sward. They were positively related to the low contents of the above cations in the soils or the relatively low content ratio comparing with other cations. 3. The yields of clover in mixed sward were seriously affected by the changes in both the fertilization ratio and total concentration of cations comparing to those of the grass yields. As a consequence, total yields, quality, and botanical composition of the mixed sward were also affected. 4. The antagonis among the cations K, Ca, and Mg was known from the point of mineral contents of grass and clover. 5. The equivalent ratio K/(Ca+Mg) or grass was greatly increased by the range of 2.4 and 3.3 in the K-group treatment, which was higher than the critical level 2.2 of grass tetany, otherwise that. of clover by the range of 0.9 and 1.2. Therfore, it may be concluded that if the botanical composition of grass/legume sward is optimum, the incidence of grass tetany can be eliminated.

Background: The causes of the pleural effusion are remained unclear in a the substantial number of patients with exudative effusions determined by an examination of the fluid obtained via thoracentesis. Among the various tools for diagnosing exudative pleural effusions, thoracoscopy has a high diagnostic yield for cancer and tuberculosis. Medical thoracoscopy can also be carried out under local anesthesia with mild sedation. The aim of this study was to determine diagnostic accuracy and safety of medical thoracoscopy. Methods: Twenty-five patients with exudative pleural effusions of an unknown cause underwent medical thoracoscopy between October 2005 and September 2006 in Konyang University Hospital. The clinical data such as age, gender, preoperative pulmonary function, amounts of pleural effusion on lateral decubitus radiography were collected. The vital signs were recorded, and arterial blood gas analyses were performed five times during medical thoracoscopy in order to evaluate the cardiopulmonary status and acid-base changes. Results: The mean age of the patients was 56.8 years (range 22-79). The mean depth of the effusion on lateral decubitus radiography (LDR) was 27.49 mm. The medical thoracoscopic pleural biopsy was diagnostic in 24 patients (96.0%), with a diagnosis of tuberculosis pleurisy in 9 patients (36%), malignant effusions in 8 patients (32%), and parapneumonic effusions in 7 patients (28%). Medical thoracoscopy failed to confirm the cause of the pleural effusion in one patient, who was diagnosed with tuberculosis by a pericardial biopsy. There were no significant changes in blood pressure, heart rate, acid-base and no major complications in all cases during medical thoracoscopy (p>0.05). Conclusions: Medical thoracoscopy is a safe method for patients with unknown pleural effusions with a relatively high diagnostic accuracy.
This study was carried out to compare the physicochemical characteristics and sensory quality of Sogokju (Korean traditional rice wine) prepared with waxy rice varieties. Among tested waxy rice varieties, highest protein contents (8.11%) was observed in cv. Sangjuchal, and highest whiteness and L-value were observed in cv. Hwaseonchal, while no significant differences in gelatinization temperature could be observed among tested varieties, and cv. Boseokchal and Sinseonchal exhibited higher breakdown viscosity compared to the others. The alcohol contents of Sogokju with waxy rice varieties ranges from 13.0 to 13.4%, and the brix degree and turbidity were within the range of 20.5 to 24.6 $^{\circ}Bx$, and 0.0344 to 0.0530, respectively. The highest L-value (6.90), b-value (l.45), pH (4.79), total acidity (0.8384%), and glucose content (10.843 g/100 ml) could be observed in Sogokju made with cv. Sangjuchal. The organic acids such as succinic acid, malic acid, citric acid and oxalic acid could be detected in Sogokju. Although no variety-dependant differences in appearance, aroma, and taste could be found in sensory evaluation, Sogokju made with cvs. Sinseonchal, Haepyeongchal, and Hwaseonchal showed higher overall quality than Sogokju made with cv. Dongjinchal, which is most widely used for Sogokju used for Sogokju production nowadays.
Purpose: To evaluate the feasibility and usefulness of the waist circumference-to-height ratio (WHTR) in screening for obesity in Korean children and adolescents. Methods: Data, including body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and height, were obtained from the national growth surveys for children and adolescents in 2005. The WHTR was calculated dividing WC by height in subjects 2~18 years of age. Overweight and obese were defined by BMI percentiles for age and gender. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed to find out the optimal cutoff values of WHTR that matched BMI-determined overweight and obesity using the STATA program. The area under the curve (AUC), a measure of diagnostic power, of WHTR was compared to WC. The influence of age on WHTR was analyzed by the SAS program. Results: The WHTR significantly decreased with age, and had less correlation with age in the 6~18-year-old age group than the 2~5-year-old age group. Furthermore, the WHTR also had less correlation with age than WC in the 6~18-year-old age group. The AUC of WHTR in identifying overweight and obesity was significantly higher than the AUC of WC in the 6~18-year-old age group. The optimal cutoff values were 0.51 in boys and 0.49 in girls for obesity, and 0.48 in boys and 0.47 in girls for overweight, with all having the AUC>0.9. The optimal cutoff values of WHTR had a higher sensitivity for diagnosing obesity than WC${\geq}$90th percentiles. Conclusion: The WHTR is an easy, accurate, and less age-dependent index with high applicability in screening for obesity in children and adolescents.
This study examined the benthic diatom community distribution, land cover/use and water quality in relation to stream shape complexity (SSC) in the Seom River watershed. SSC showed a significant relation to the riparian land cover/use pattern and also water quality variables of the studied streams. Streams with high stream shape complexity (HSC) appeared to have a high proportion of forest and farmland, while streams having a low stream shape complexity (LSC) appeared to have high proportion of city. Streams with lower SSC showed higher nutrients concentration in the stream waters. Benthic diatom species composition and dominant species appeared to be similar regardless of SSC differences among the studied streams, while the variation of diatom density was manifested with SSC. The relative abundance of dominant benthic diatoms varied with SSC. Saprophilic diatoms were dominant in the streams of LSC, while saproxenic diatoms were dominant in the streams of HSC. During the evaluation of biological water quality using the benthic diatom indices, Trophic Diatom Index (TDI) and Diatom Assemblage Index to organic water pollution (DAIpo), the streams of LSC generally showed poorer water quality than those of MSC (Middle stream shape complexity) and HSC. In particular, BOD, TP, and $PO_4$-P showed significant relationships with DAIpo. In conclusion, shape complexity of streams in the Seom River watershed showed a close relation with benthic diatom distribution. This relation seemed to primarily be resulted from the effect of proximate factors, such as water quality, which might be affected by the land use types determining the degree of SSC.

Most elderly have difficulties in managing food safety and nutrition by themselves. Various nutrition educations for the elderly have been developed, but food safety and nutrition education program and educational tools for the elderly are very limited. The aim of the study was to evaluate a food safety and nutrition education program based on the Health Belief Model (HBM) for the elderly. Education program was implemented for 220 seniors (137 educated group and 83 control group) aged over 65 years at senior welfare community centers. The intervention study was carried out on a weekly basis during each of 5 weeks, and each session lasted about 35 or 40 minutes. The effectiveness of the program was assessed with a questionnaire before and after education. Education program consisted of a 5 week program, and topics were 'Dietary changes for the elderly's healthy life', 'Prevention of food poisoning in everyday life', 'Safe food handling for my health', 'Healthy dietary life to prevent chronic disease', and 'Safety! nutrition! healthy dietary life'. Education program materials such as slides, handouts, videos, leaflet, and booklets were developed. As a result, there were score improvements in knowledge, dietary behaviors, and health belief after intervention in the intervention group, which were higher than those of the control group. In particular, there was a meaningful interrelation between dietary behavior and health belief (r=0.520, P<0.001). This finding suggests that changing beliefs is very important to make desirable dietary behavioral changes. For this reason, we can conclude HBM theory is an effective model to educate nutrition and food safety for the elderly. Furthermore, food safety and nutrition education programs are implemented and delivered continuously at various settings such as a health center or community welfare center, and those will contribute significantly to enhance perception and change their desirable dietary behaviors for the elderly.
Background: Due to the advancement of video assisted thoracoscopic techniques, an operation for primary spontaneous pneumothorax is now considered a common procedure. However, whether a preventive operation is necessary when a contralateral bulla is found on High Resolution Computed Tomography (HRCT) at the time of the first primary spontaneous pneumothorax attack is still unknown. In this retrospective study, it was our intension to find whether contralateral bullae are related to the occurrence of pneumothorax. Material and Method: Between January 1999 and April 2006, 550 patients were admitted to the Chungnam University hospital with primary spontaneous pneumothorax, which was confirmed by the HRCT scans in 190 patents. In these 190 patients, 159 had not received a bilateral operation after their first primary spontaneous pneumothorax attack. In these 159 patients, the relationship between the presence of contralateral bullae and the occurrence of pneumothorax was measured. Result: In these 159 patients, 67 had contralateral bullae confirmed inform the HRCT scan, and 92 had no visible contralateral bullae, During the follow up period, 6 patients (8.9%) with contralateral bullae had an occurrence of contralateral pneumothorax, and 5 patients (5.4%) without contralateral bullae had an occurrence of contralateral pneumothorax. (p=0.529 [Fisher's exact test]) Conclusion: In patients with unilateral primary pneumothorax, an HRCT scan is a useful way of confirming contralateral pulmonary bullae. However, the presence of bullae is not a significant predictive sign of an occurrence of contralateral pneumothorax. Also, surgery for pneumothorax is not completely uncomplicated, and bilateral surgery is still doubtful. A further prospective study will be required to find the relationship between the bullae found on HRCT and the occurrence of pneumothorax.
This study was carried out to examine the quality characteristics of Doenjang manufactured with or without soaking Meju in brine according to salt concentrations (8 and 12%) during fermentation for 6 months. The moisture content and salinity of Doenjang fermented for 6 months were 54.9-60.3% and 7.8-12.5%, respectively. Doenjang using soaking Meju in brine had higher pH and lower titratable acidity than that using non-soaking Meju. The reducing sugar content in all samples was increased until 2 months and then decreased regardless of soaking Meju, especially that of non-soaking 8% Doenjang was the highest. The 8% low-salt Doenjang was shown the highest amino-type nitrogen content, especially the soaking Doenjang was higher than the non-soaking Doenjang. ${\alpha}$-amylase activity of all samples during fermentation were continuously decreased from 0.91-0.94 Unit/g to 0.01-0.06 Unit/g, especially the 8% soaking Doenjang was shown the highest activity after 2 months. Total bacterial count of the soaking Doenjang at the 6 months was in range of 7.8-8.0 log CFU/g and that of the non-soaking Doenjang was in range of 7.2-7.5 log CFU/g. By taste analysis, the 8% soaking Doenjang was shown the similar taste pattern with commercial Doenjang. In conclusion, the 8% low-salt Doenjang manufactured with soaking Meju in brine was a suitable concentration in order to reduce salt intake.
