In this study, fiber mechanical pretreatment before refining was executed with the addition of papermaking addiditives to find synergistic effects on fiber property improvement. Three fiber furnishes (SwBKP, KOCC, and BCTMP), and five different additives (CMC, CPAM, PEO, NaOH, $Na_2O_2$) were used. It was confirmed again that fiber mechanical pretreatment using Hobart mixer was a special way to modify fiber properties, where fiber WRV (water retention value) increases without losing fiber length. For SwBKP, addition of small amount of CMC (0.2% OD basis), and for KOCC, PEO (0.2% OD basis) caused additional significant improvement of the fiber furnish properties, respectively. Other additives did not cause adverse effects on the mechanical pretreatment, or better. For BCTMP, NaOH addition followed by mechanical pretreatment caused more than 20% improvement in tensile and tear strength simultaneously, compared to the control. The yellowing caused by the treatment of NaOH on BCTMP could be minimized by using $Na_2O_2$ without losing the positive effect of NaOH.
The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of sodium deoxycholate (NaDC) and the effects of amides on the micellization processes have been studied by fluorometric technique using pyrene as a probe. The addition of amides as cosolvent destabilized the NaDC micelle and increased the CMC. The order of effectiveness for the perturbation of NaDC micelle was N-methylacetamide ${\ge}$ DMF > acetamide > formamide, which is the order of hydrophobicity of the amines. This indicated that the effect of amides on the micellization processes of NaDC arises from diminution of the hydrophobic effect. The electrostatic repulsion between ionic head groups in the NaDC micelle appeared to be much less than that in aliphatic ionic micelle. This was also revealed in the weaker dependence of the CMC on ionic strength. The premicellar association of NaDC was not significantly involved in the micellization processes of the bile salt.
The effect of an organic peroxide, t-butylhydroperoxide (t-BHP), on glutamate uptake was studied in synaptosomes prepared from cerebral cortex. t-BHP inhibited the $Na^+-dependent$ glutamate uptake with no change in the $Na^+-independent$ uptake. This effect of t-BHP was not altered by addition of $Ca^{2+}$ channel blockers (verapamil, diltiazem and nifedipine) or $PLA_2$ inhibitors (dibucaine, butacaine and quinacrine). However, the effect was prevented by iron chelators (deferoxamine and phenanthroline) and phenolic antioxidants (N,N'-diphenyl-phenylenediamine, butylated hydroxyanisole, and butylated hydroxytoluene). At low concentrations (<1.0 mM), t-BHP inhibited glutamate uptake without altering lipid peroxidation. Moreover, a large increase in lipid peroxidation by $ascorbate/Fe^{2+}$ was not accompanied by an inhibition of glutamate uptake. The impairment of glutamate uptake by t-BHP was not intimately related to the change in $Na^+-K+-ATPase$ activity. These results suggest that inhibition of glutamate uptake by t-BHP is not totally mediated by peroxidation of membrane lipid, but is associated with direct interactions of glutamate transport proteins with t-BHP metabolites. The $Ca^{2+}$ influx through $Ca^{2+}$ channel or $PLA_2$ activation may not be involved in the t-BHP inhibition of glutamate transport.
The present study investigated the ageing effect on compressibility, permeability and shear strength behavior of kaolin and bentonite samples in the presence of NaCl and CaCl2 solutions. The compressibility, permeability and shear strength parameters were determined on the 60, 190, and 250 days cured samples. The results have shown that, the kaolin sample becomes more compressible in the presence Ca2+ ions with ageing. Generally, the normalized compression index values of bentonite samples increased at the end of 60 days and 250 days curing time periods. The normalized permeability value of kaolin decreased by ageing in the presence of Na+ ions almost twofold. The permeability values of bentonite increased both in NaCl and CaCl2 solutions during ageing. In the presence of Na+ ions kaolin had higher max. shear stress value than Ca2+ ions. When the max. shear stress values of 0, 60 and 190 days samples were compared, it was seen that NaCl solution had no significant effect on the shear strength of kaolin sample. However, the shear strength of kaolin increased in the CaCl2 solution during ageing. In the presence of Ca2+ ions the max. shear stress value of bentonite was higher. The results of this study have shown that ageing has significant effects on the compressibility, permeability and shear strength of kaolinitic and bentonitic clayey soils.
The objective of this study was to investigate the corrosion behavior of aluminum (AA1100) in a mixed solution of 0 ~ 0.1 g/L Na2S + 0.3 ~ 3 g/L NaCl + 0 ~ 10 mL/L H2O2. Potentiodynamic polarization tests were performed. Effects of solution compositions on corrosion potential, corrosion rate, and pitting potential of aluminum were statistically analyzed with a regression model. Results suggested that localized corrosion susceptibility of aluminum was increased in the solution with increasing concentration of NaCl because the pitting potential was lowered linearly with increasing NaCl concentration. On the contrary, H2O2 mitigated the galvanic corrosion of aluminum by increasing the corrosion potential. It also mitigated localized corrosion by increasing the pitting potential of aluminum. Na2S did not exert a noticeable effect on the corrosion of aluminum. These effects of different chemical species at various concentrations were independent of each other. Synergy or offset effect was not observed.
The author investigated the effect of $Mg^#$, $Ca^#$, $Na^+$, $K^+$ and creatine phosphate on the ATPase activity of microsomal fraction isolated from rabbit uterus and obtained the following results : 1) The uterine microsomal fraction contained the $Na^+-$ and $K^+-$ activated ATPase in the presence of $Mg^#$. The ATPase activity increased with protein content in the fraction. 2) The maximum ATPase activity was obtained at $Na^+$ and $K^+$ concentraction of 100 mM respectively. 3) In the absence of $Mg^#$, the ATPase was not activated by $Na^+$ and $K^+$, but inhibited. 4) Car stimulated the $Na^+-$ and $K^+-$ activated ATPase in the presence of $Mg^#$. However, in the absence of $Mg^#$, the ATPase was not activated by $Ca^#$. 5) The $K^+-$ activated ATPase activity was greater than the $Na^+-activated$ ATPase under all conditions. 6) The $Na^+-$ and $K^+$ activated ATPase activity was increased by addition of creatine phosphokinase and creatine phosphate to the reaction mixture.
The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of calcium levels(50, 100 and 200% of requirement) on metabolism of Ca, Na and K in Young and adult female rats for 3 weeks. There was no significant difference in feed intake, body weight gain and feed efficiency ratio among the groups of different Ca intake level. Serum Na level of high-Ca group was significantly lower than that of low-Ca or normal-Ca group in Young rats. There was no significant difference in liver Ca and K contents among the groups of different Ca intake levels. But, Na content in liver was decreased by the increase of dietary Ca intake. Ca content in kidney of high-Ca group in young rats and normal-Ca group in adult rats were significantly higher than those of other groups. Na content in kidney of low-Ca group was lower than those of normal-Ca and high-Ca groups. Urinary excretions of Na and K and fecal excretion of Ca were increased by the increase of dietary Ca intake. But, fecal excretions of Na and K were not affected by dietary Ca intake. According to this study, it was found that the high Ca consumption promotes excretions of fecal Ca and urinary Na and K in rats. The study verifies the need for more study on the interrelationship among Ca, Na and K metabolism and bood pressure.
