In order to utilize dolomite as a calcium/magnesium compound material, it was prepared highly reactive calcined dolomite(CaO·MgO) using a microwave kiln (950 ℃, 60 min). The experiment was performed according to the standard of the hydration test (ASTM C 110) and hydration reactivity was analyzed as medium reactivity (max 74.1 ℃, 5 min). Experiments were performed with calcined dolomite and salt (MgCl2·6H2O) (a) 1:1, (b) 1:1.5, and (c) 1:2 wt% based on the hydration reaction of calcined dolomite. The result of X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that MgO of calcined dolomite increased to Mg(OH)2 as the salt addition ratio increased. After the separating reaction, calcium was stirred at 80 ℃, 24 hr that produced CaCl2 of white crystal. XRD results, it was confirmed calcium chloride hydrate (CaCl2·(H2O)x) and CaO of calcined dolomite and salt additional reaction was separated into CaCl2. And it was synthesized with Ca(OH)2 99 wt% by NaOH adding reaction to the CaCl2 solution, and the synthesized Ca(OH)2 was manufactured CaO through the heat treatment process. In order to prepare calcium carbonate, CaCO3 was synthesized by adding Na2CO3 to CaCl2 solution, and the shape was analyzed in cubic form with a purity of 99 wt%.
The nutritional compositions and antioxidative activities of the Kimcheon lowbush and Pyungtaek highbush blueberries cultivated in South Korea were investigated. The approximate compositions, pH, and soluble-solid and mineral contents of P, Ca, Mg, Na, and Zn were determined. Both blueberry cultivars had mainly fructose and glucose as free sugars while disaccharides such as sucrose, maltose, and lactose were not detected in both. Oleic, linoleic, and linolenic fatty acids were the major fatty acids in both types of blueberries. The total of 16 free amino acids, including seven essential and nine non-essential amino acids, were higher in the Pyungtaek highbush blueberry. Among the amino acids, arginine was especially much higher in the Pyungtaek highbush blueberry. The anthocyanin, resveratrol, and polyphenol compounds, which are the important biologically active compounds in blueberries, were found. The anthocyanin contents of the Kimcheon lowbush and Pyungtaek highbush blueberries were 22.0 and 18.1 mg/100 g, respectively; the resveratrol contents by HPLC, 0.12 and 0.11 mg/100 g; and the total polyphenol contents, 141.3 and 138.4 mg/100 g. The electron-donating ability determined based on the DPPH radical scavenging activity was increased in a concentration-dependent manner, and it was higher than that of the Pyungtaek highbush blueberries, which implies that it is highly correlated with the higher amounts of total polyphenol, anthocyanin, and resveratrol in it. In conclusion, the two varieties of Korean blueberries can be suggested as potential sources of high-value-added functional foods.

The general components and cyclitol compounds of ice plant (Mesembryanthemum crystallinum) were analyzed to examine the possibility of using extracts as functional food materials, the antioxidant effects and antidiabetic activities of the extracts by solvent fraction were tested. Among the mineral contents, contents of K and Na were the largest ($1,213.33{\pm}2.52$ and $545.53{\pm}12.01mg/100g$, respectively), followed by S, Ca, P, and Mg in order of precedence. Among cyclitol compounds, content of D-pinitol was the largest ($4.04{\pm}0.08mg/g$) while contents of chiro-inositol and myo-inositol were relatively small ($2.82{\pm}0.01$ and $0.25{\pm}0.01mg/g$, respectively). Among total phenol contents by solvent fraction, contents of chloroform and ethyl acetate fractions were large ($35.80{\pm}1.33$ and $23.70{\pm}0.62mg\;GAE/g$, respectively). Among antioxidant activity levels examined by DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, and lipid/MA assays, the chloroform fraction commonly showed the highest level of activity while the ethyl acetate fraction showed relatively high levels of activity. The antioxidant activity levels were proportional to total phenol contents by solvent fraction. As for antidiabetic effects, all solvent fractions showed at least 50% ${\alpha}-glucosidase$ inhibitory activity levels while the ethyl acetate, butanol, and chloroform fractions showed high levels activity of $90.33{\pm}0.40$, $87.98{\pm}0.16$, and $86.38{\pm}0.51%$, respectively. The ${\alpha}-amylase$ inhibitory actively levels were in the range of $25.63{\pm}1.45{\sim}60.34{\pm}2.67%$, which was lower than the ${\alpha}-glucosidase$ inhibitory activity levels, but the inhibitory activity levels by solvent fraction were similar. Given the above study results, ice plant can be utilized as a natural material with antioxidative and antidiabetic functionality.

Since industrialization, the production and utilization of various chemicals has contributed to improving the quality of our lives, but the subsequent discharge of massive waste is inevitable, and environmental pollution is becoming more serious every day. Exposure to chemicals as a result of environmental pollution is having a negative effect on human health and the ecosystem, and cleaning up the polluted environment that can affect our lives is a very important issue. Toxic aromatic compounds have been detected frequently in soil, groundwater, and wastewater because of the extensive use of oil products, and phenol, which is used to produce synthetic resins, textiles, and dyes, is one of the major pollutants, along with insecticides and preservatives. Phenol can cause dyspnea, headache, vomiting, mutation, and carcinogenesis. Phenol-degrading bacterium DWB-1-8 was isolated from the activated sludge of textile wastewater; this strain was identified as Comamonas testosteroni by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The optimal culture conditions for the cell growth and degradation of phenol were 0.7% K2HPO4, 0.6% NaH2PO4, 0.1% NH4NO3, 0.015% MgSO4·7H2O, 0.001% FeSO4·7H2O, an initial pH of 7, and a temperature of 30℃. The strain was also able to grow by using other toxic compounds, such as benzene, toluene, or xylene (BTX), as the sole source of carbon.
This study was performed to enhance the cleanup efficiency of methoxyfenozide and bentazone by pH adjustment in the course of liquid-liquid partition and to develop an optimum analytical conditions using HPLC coupled with DAD for two matrices, brown rice and rice straw. Preparation procedure of brown rice sample was "extraction${\rightarrow}$coagulation${\rightarrow}$liquid-liquid partition$\rightarrow$-florisil C.C", and this procedure was samely applied to two compounds. In rice straw, preparation procedure of methoxyfenozide sample was "extraction$\rightarrow$-alkalization$\rightarrow$liquid-liquid extraction$\rightarrow$coagulation$\rightarrow$florisil C.C", and in the case of bentazone, "extraction$\rightarrow$alkalization$\rightarrow$liquid-liquid partition$\rightarrow$acidification$\rightarrow$liquid-liquid extraction$\rightarrow$florisil C.C". All these purified samples were redissolved in the mobile phases, acetonitile : 20 mM sodium acetate (75:25, v/v) for methoxyfenozide and acetonitrile : 75 mM sodium acetate, pH 6.0 (40:60, v/v) for bentazone. Recoveries of methoxyfenozide analysis in brown rice and rice straw were 83.5-97.4 and 86.4-97.3%, and detection limits were 0.02 and 0.04 mg/kg, respectively. Recoveries of bentazone in brown rice and rice straw were 86.8-101.9 and 88.3-94.5% and detection limits were 0.005 and 0.01 mg/kg, respectively. This methods seem to be usefully applied to the residue analysis of two compounds in the view of producing stable analytical condition and fair reproducibility.
The effluents of chemical and petroleum industries often contain non-biodegradable aromatic compounds, with phenol being one of the major organic pollutants present among a wide variety of highly toxic organic chemicals. Phenol is toxic upon ingestion, contact, or inhalation, and it is lethal to fish even at concentrations as low as 0.005 ppm. Phenol biodegradation has been studied in detail using bacterial strains. However, these microorganisms suffer from substrate inhibition at high concentrations of phenol, whereby growth is inhibited. A phenol-degrading bacterium, P21, was isolated from oil-contaminated soil. The phenotypic characteristics and a phylogenetic analysis indicated the close relationship of strain P21 to Rhodococcus pyridinovorans. Phenol biodegradation by strain P21 was studied under shaking condition. The optimal conditions for phenol biodegradation by strain P21 were 0.09% $KNO_3$, 0.1% $K_2HPO_4$, 0.3% $NaH_2PO_4$, 0.015% $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$, 0.001% $FeSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$, initial pH 9, and $20-30^{\circ}C$, respectively. When 1,000 ppm of phenol was added to the optimal medium, the strain P21 completely degraded it within two days. Rhodococcus pyridinovorans P21 could grow in up to 1,500 ppm of phenol as the sole carbon source in a batch culture, but it could not grow in a medium containing above 2,000 ppm. Moreover, strain P21 could utilize toxic compounds, such as toluene, xylene, and hexane, as a sole carbon source. However, no growth was detected on chloroform.
This study was conducted to compare nutritional composition and taste-related compounds of breast and thigh meats from four lines of Korean native chickens (KNC) Yeonsan Ogye, Hyunin Black, Hwangbong, and Hoengseong Yakdak. White Leghorn (WL) was used as a control. Fifteen male chickens (three chickens in each line) were grown under same condition and slaughtered at 53 weeks old. The contents of Fe and K in KNC, especially Hwangbong breast meat and thigh meat of Hyunin Black and Hoengseong Yakdak, were higher than WL. The contents of Na were lower in KNC compared with WL regardless of parts (p<0.05). Vitamin A contents were higher in thigh meat of WL and Hyunin Black, and vitamin $B_1$ contents were lower in Hoengseong Yakdak than other lines. Vitamin $B_3$ were higher in breast meat of four lines of KNC and thigh meat of Hoengseong Yakdak than WL. Total amino acid contents were higher in breast meat of KNC than WL. The level of good-tasting amino acids were significantly higher in breast meat of Hoengseong Yakdak and WL, and thigh meat of Hyunin Black and WL than other lines of chickens (p<0.05). The ratio of good-tasting amino acids to bitter tasting amino acids was higher in breast meat of Hoengseong Yakdak and thigh meat of Hyunin Black than WL. IMP contents were higher in Hyunin Black and WL than other lines of chickens. Based on these results, it can be concluded that four lines of KNC may have superior nutritional quality and taste when compared with WL.

Biomass has been used to secure renewable energy certificates (REC) in domestic and overseas coal-fired power plants. In recent years, biofuel has been diversified from traditional wood pellets to non-woody biomass. Non-woody biomass has a higher content of alkaline metals such as K and Na than wood-based biomass, resulting in a lower melting point and an increase in slagging on boiler tubes, which reduces boiler efficiency. This study analyzed the effect of kaolin, an additive commonly used to increase melting points, on biomass co-firing to coal through thermochemical equilibrium calculations. In a previous experiment on biomass co-firing to coal conducted at 80 kWth, it was interpreted that the use of kaolin actually increased the amount of fouling. In this study, analysis showed that when kaolin was added, aluminosilicate compounds were generated due to Al2O3, which is abundant in coal, and mullite was formed. Thus, it was confirmed that the amount of slag increased when more kaolin was used. Further analysis was conducted by increasing the biomass co-firing rate from 0% to 100% at 10% intervals, and the results showed non-linear liquid slag generation. As a result, it was found that the least amount of liquid slag was generated when the biomass co-firing rate was between 50 and 60%. The phase diagram analysis showed that high melting point compounds such as leucite and feldspar were most abundantly generated under these conditions.

This study is conducted to investigate the yield of extract, total phenolic compounds, total flavonoid compound contents, free radical scavenging activities (DPPH assay, ABTS assay), reducing power (Oyaizu's assay, FRAP assay) and antimicrobial activities of spinach according to various cooking methods (non-blanched, blanched, seasoned). The yield of non-blanched spinach is 1.64% and the extract yield of blanched spinach is 1.49%, and on the other hand, the yield of seasoned spinach is 6.01%. Total polyphenol contents of seasoned spinach is recorded as $124.31{\pm}1.37mg$ GAE/100 g FW, non-blanched spinach $51.24{\pm}0.27mg$ GAE/100 g FW, and blanched spinach $42.48{\pm}0.53mg$ GAE/100 g FW. From the total flavonoids, seasoned spinach extracts ($15.60{\pm}0.20mg$ CE/100 g FW) showed higher total flavonoid contents than non-blanched. Total antioxidant activities (DPPH assay, ABTS assay, FRAP assay, reducing power) are shown to be in the order of seasoned spinach > non-blanched spinach > blanched spinach. In the antimicrobial activities, non-blanched spinach (5, 10 mg/disc) showed antimicrobial activity against S. enterica and P. aeruginosa. The inhibition zone diameter from extracts of blanched spinach has not been detected. Seasoned spinach indicated antimicrobial activity only against P. aeruginosa (8.15 mm) at 10 mg/disc. If we are to eat a lot of non-blanched spinach, it would cause calculus. Blanching helps to prevent against calculus, since the blanching process can remove various amounts of oxalic acids. The overall results of this study demonstrate that seasoned cooked spinach would be the most efficient way of ingestion to consume antioxidant compounds.
