Potential to mitigate ammonia emission from slurry by increasing dietary fermentable fiber through inclusion of tropical byproducts in practical diets for growing pigs

  • Objective: Research was conducted to test the effect of including fiber-rich feedstuffs in practical pig diets on nutrient digestibility, nitrogen balance and ammonia emissions from slurry. Methods: Three Vietnamese fiber sources were screened, namely cassava leaf meal (CL), cassava root residue (CR), and tofu by-product (TF). Accordingly, a control diet (Con) with 10% of dietary non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) and three test diets including one of the three fiber-rich feedstuffs to reach 15% of NSP were formulated. All formulated diets had the same level of crude protein (CP), in vitro ileal protein digestible and metabolisable energy, whereas the in vitro hindgut volatile fatty acid (VFA) production of the test diets was 12% to 20% higher than the control diet. Forty growing barrows with initial body weight at $28.6{\pm}1.93kg$ ($mean{\pm}standard$ deviation) were allocated to the four treatments. When pigs reached about 50 kg of body weight, four pigs from each treatment were used for a nitrogen balance trial and ammonia emission assessment, the remaining six pigs continued the second period of the feeding trial. Results: The TF treatment increased fecal VFA by 33% as compared with the control treatment (p = 0.07), suggesting stimulation of the hindgut fermentation. However, urinary N was not significantly reduced or shifted to fecal N, nor was slurry pH decreased. Accordingly, ammonia emissions were not mitigated. CR and CL treatments failed to enhance in vivo hindgut fermentation, as assessed by fecal VFA and purine bases. On the contrary, the reduction of CP digestibility in the CL treatment enhanced ammonia emissions from slurry. Conclusion: Dietary inclusion of cassava and tofu byproducts through an increase of dietary NSP from 10% to 15% might stimulate fecal VFA excretion but this does not guarantee a reduction in ammonia emissions from slurry, while its interaction with protein digestibility even might enhance enhanced ammonia emission.

  • Novel halactolactonizations using NBS (2), NIS(3), and NSP(4) in dry DMF were found to be the most reasonable and efficient procedures. The participation of X as the cylization initiator could be clarly rationalized by experimental results and the regioselectivities of formed halolactones were reasonably elucidated by weakly bridged carbonium ion intermediate.

A New Approach to Objective Evaluation of the Success of Nasal Septum Perforation

  • Background Perforations in the nasal septum (NSP) give rise not only to disintegration of the septum anatomy but also impairment in normal nasal physiology. The successes of these surgical techniques are usually equated to anatomical closure of the perforation. The goal of this study is to evaluate the subjective and objective results of our surgical technique for septal perforation surgery. Methods All NSPs in the six patients were closed by inferior turbinate flap. The Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE) instrument was used to evaluate the preoperative and postoperative subjective sensation of nasal obstruction. Measurement of preoperative and postoperative nasal airway resistance was performed using active anterior rhinomanometry which is an objective test. Wilcoxson signed rank test and Spearman correlation test were used to analyze correlation between NOSE scores and rhinomanometric measurements. Results The full closure of the septal perforations was noted in 100% of patients. The total NOSE score was 14 preoperatively and one postoperatively. The improvement in NOSE scores was statistically significant ($P{\leq}0.002$). The mean preoperative total resistance (ResT150) value was $0.13Pa/cm^3s^{-1}$, which is below the normal range ($0.16-0.31Pa/cm^3s^{-1}$), while the mean postoperative ResT150 value was $0.27Pa/cm^3s^{-1}$. The correlation between the improvement in NOSE scores and improvements in ResT150 values was statistically significant. Conclusions Surgical approaches should aim to solve both the anatomical and physiological problems of NSP. The application of subjective and objective tests in the postoperative period will help surgeons assess the applied techniques.

체외배양 소 난관상피세포의 정자에 대한 결합 및 활력유지능 (The ability of in vitro cultured bovine oviduct epithelial cells in binding and maintaining motility of bull sperm)

  • The aim of these experiments was to investigate the effects of bovine oviduct epithelial cells (OEC) derived from different segments to bind sperm binding and maintain their motility in vitro. In experiment 1, the number of sperm attached to OEC derived from isthmus or ampulla, the motility of unattached sperm during co-culture and fertilizing ability were assessed. In experiment 2, heparin treated sperm (hsp) or no treated sperm (nsp) were used to evaluate OEC binding ability of capacitated sperm. In experiment 1, regardless of their origin, approximately 65% of the sperm were attached to OEC within 2h. From 6h of co-culture, the numbers of unattached sperm on ampullary OEC were significantly higher than those on isthmic OEC (p<0.005). From 12h of co-culture, the motility of unattached sperm on isthmic OEC were significantly higher than those on ampullary OEC(p<0.05). The cleavage rate of oocytes inseminated on OEC derived from isthmic segment was also significantly higher than those from ampullary segment (p<0.01). In experiment 2, the numbers of unattached hsp on OEC were significantly higher than those of controls (p<0.01), between 2-24h examination. From 12h of co-culture, the motility of unattached nsp were significantly greater than those of hsp (p<0.01). These results show that bovine OEC derived from the isthmus play more important role(s) for sperm binding, maintaining motility and fertilization in vitro than those from the ampulla, and heparin induced capacitation may change sperm binding ability on OEC in vitro.

MAP Kinase-Mediated Negative Regulation of Symbiotic Nodule Formation in Medicago truncatula

  • Mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling cascades play critical roles in various cellular events in plants, including stress responses, innate immunity, hormone signaling, and cell specificity. MAPK-mediated stress signaling is also known to negatively regulate nitrogen-fixing symbiotic interactions, but the molecular mechanism of the MAPK signaling cascades underlying the symbiotic nodule development remains largely unknown. We show that the MtMKK5-MtMPK3/6 signaling module negatively regulates the early symbiotic nodule formation, probably upstream of ERN1 (ERF Required for Nodulation 1) and NSP1 (Nod factor Signaling Pathway 1) in Medicago truncatula. The overexpression of MtMKK5 stimulated stress and defense signaling pathways but also reduced nodule formation in M. truncatula roots. Conversely, a MAPK specific inhibitor, U0126, enhanced nodule formation and the expression of an early nodulation marker gene, MtNIN. We found that MtMKK5 directly activates MtMPK3/6 by phosphorylating the TEY motif within the activation loop and that the MtMPK3/6 proteins physically interact with the early nodulation-related transcription factors ERN1 and NSP1. These data suggest that the stress signaling-mediated MtMKK5/MtMPK3/6 module suppresses symbiotic nodule development via the action of early nodulation transcription factors.

반복 복원 알고리듬에서의 종료 규칙에 관한 연구 (Study on the termination rule in the iterative image restoration algorithm)

  • 영상 복원의 목적은 훼손 요인을 제거하여 원 영상에 가장 근접하게 만드는 것이다. 이는 정칙화 반복 복원 방법을 통해 이루어 질 수 있다. 영상 복원 방법에서 좋은 종료 규칙은 보다 우수한 화질의 복원 영상과 보다 적은 계산량이라는 두가지 목적을 모두 만족시킬 수 있어야 한다. 이에 본 논문에서는 반복 복원 방법의 다항식적인 표현을 이용한 종료 규칙을 제안한다. 이 규칙에서는 각 반복 복원 단계에서의 복원 영상과 원 영상의 추정 오차를 구해낸 뒤, 이를 선호에 의한 오차와 잡음에 의한 오차로 구분하여, 이 들간의 비율을 달리 작용한다. 이로써 보다 우수한 복원 영상을 보다 적은 계산량에 의해 얻을 수 있다. 이를 위해 잡음 억제 변수(Noise Suppression Parameter)라는 새로운 변수를 정의 하며, 또한 임의의 잡음 정도에 대하여 적정 지점에서 반복을 중지시킬 수 있도록 하는 잡음 억제 변수의 추정식을 제안한다. 제안한 종료 규칙으로 실험한 결과 잡음이 상대적으로 많은 경우에는 최소의 mse를 갖는 지점에서, 잡음이 상대적으로 적은 경우에는 적당히 제한된 반복 횟수를 갖는 지점에서 반복을 멈추었으며 기존의 종료 규칙에 비하여 뛰어난 성능을 나타내었다.

Effects of different surface finishing protocols for zirconia on surface roughness and bacterial biofilm formation

  • PURPOSE. Surface finishing of a zirconia restoration is essential after clinical adjustment. Herein, we investigated the effects of a surface finishing protocol for monolithic zirconia on final roughness and bacterial adherence. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Forty-eight disk-shaped monolithic zirconia specimens were fabricated and divided into four groups (n = 12) based on initial surface treatment, finishing, and polishing protocols: diamond bur+polishing bur (DP group), diamond bur+stone grinding bur+polishing bur (DSP group), no diamond bur+polishing bur (NP group), and no diamond bur+stone grinding bur+polishing bur (NSP group). Initial and final surface roughness was measured with a profilometer, and shown using scanning electron microscope. Bacterial adhesion was evaluated by quantifying Streptococcus mutans in the biofilm. Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests were used to compare results among groups, and two-way analysis of variance was used to evaluate the effects of grinding burs on final roughness (${\alpha}=.05$). RESULTS. The DP group had the highest final Ra value, followed by the DSP, NP, and NSP groups. Use of the stone grinding bur as a coarse-finishing step significantly decreased final Ra values when a diamond bur was used (P<.001). Omission of the stone grinding bur increased biofilm formation on specimen surfaces. Combining a stone grinding bur with silicone polishing burs produced the smallest final biofilm values, regardless of the use of a diamond bur in initial surface treatment. CONCLUSION. Coarse finishing of monolithic zirconia with a stone grinding bur significantly decreased final Ra values and bacterial biofilm formation when surfaces had been roughened by a diamond bur.

  • 본 논문에서는 IEEE 802.16e 네트워크에서 통신 사업자간 로밍을 위한 새로운 인증 및 키 설정(AKE: Authentication and Key Establishment) 프로토콜을 제안한다. 제안된 프로토콜은 두 개의 다른 인증 credentials를 사용하여 사용자(user) 및 단말(device) 인증을 함께 수행하며 사용자 익명성과 키 설정을 제공한다. 또한, 제안된 프로토콜에서 홈 네트워크(Home Network: HN)와 외부 네트워크(Foreign Network: FN) 사이의 메시지 교화 횟수는 단지 2 라운드(round) 수가 필요하다.

  • Several ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) protocols have implemented at ETRI (Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute) in an experimental network so that functional characteristics of the protocols under test could be certified against their protocol specifications with the help of the ETRI protocol test facilities. This paper describes ETRI protocol test architecture and its application to testing the NSP (Network Service Part) protocols : MTP (Message Transfer Part) level 3 and SCCP (Signalling Connection Control Part) of the CCITT CCS (Common Channel Signalling ) system No. 7 The test architecture presented here allows tests for two different protocol classes : peer-to-peer and multipeer protocolos. Some extensions are made to the conventional test architectures, namely the test coordination, test result transfer and network state observation method.

The Impact of Coordination on Stocking and Promotional Markdown Policies for a Supply Chain

  • Results of a study of the coordination effect in stocking and promotional markdown policies for a supply chain consisting of a retailer and a discount outlet (DCO) are reported here. We assume that the products are sold in two consecutive periods: Normal Sales Period (NSP) and subsequent Promotional Sales Period (PSP). When managers in the two periods coordinate, they share information on the demand forecast and jointly decide the stocking quantity, markdown time schedule, and markdown price to maximize mutual profit. In the absence of coordination, decisions are decentralized to optimize the individual party's objective function. Optimal coordination policy for the retailer/DCO problem setting is analyzed, and the coordination policy is compared with the uncoordinated policy to explore factors that make coordination an effective approach.
