The char burn-out and NOx emissions from sub-bituminous coal were investigated in drop tube furnace under $O_2/N_2$ and $O_2/CO_2$ environments with different $O_2$ concentrations of 12, 21 and 31%. Results show that the char burn-out rate is faster as $O_2$ concentration increases higher and char burn-out rate under $O_2/CO_2$ decreases due to the lower oxygen diffusion into coal surface through the $CO_2$ rich boundary layer. NO concentration increases with increasing $O_2$ concentration, but declines at $O_2$ concentration of 31%. Meanwhile, NO emission indexes decreases monotonically with increasing $O_2$ concentration, which indicates that more NO reduction occurs with higher $O_2$ concentration probably due to greater HCN formation. For all conditions of $O_2$ concentration, the NO concentration under $O_2/N_2$ maintains higher than those of $O_2/CO_2$ due to presence of thermal NO.

Currently, 90 % of the world's population breathes air with a fine dust content exceeding the World Health Organization's annual average exposure limit (10 ㎍/㎥). Global efforts have been devoted toward reducing secondary pollutants and ultra-fine dust through regulations on nitrogen oxides released over land and sea. Domestic efforts have also aimed at creating clean marine environments by reducing sulfur emissions, which are the primary cause of dust accumulation in ships, through developing and distributing environment-friendly ships. Among the technologies for reducing harmful emissions from diesel engines, electrostatic precipitator offer several advantages such as a low pressure loss, high dust collection efficiency, and NOx removal and maintenance. This study aims to increase the durability of a ship by improving equipment quality through failure mode effects analysis for the preventive maintenance of an electrostatic precipitator that was developed for reducing fine dust particles emitted from the 2,427 kW marine diesel engines in ships with a gross tonnage of 999 tons. With regard to risk priority, failure mode 241 (poor dust capture efficiency) was the highest, with an RPN of 180. It was necessary to determine the high-risk failure mode in the collecting electrode and manage it intensively. This was caused by clearance defects, owing to vibrations and consequent pin loosening. Given that pin loosening is mainly caused by vibrations generated in the hull or equipment, it is necessary to manage the position of pin loosening.

In this study, the characteristics of air pollutant emissions from ships' engines have been investigated by conducting E2 and E3 cycle mode tests. A engine 360Ps (Doosan L126TIH engine) and 400kW dynamometer Horiba-Schenck were utilized for engine tests. The FTIR analyzer and SPC were used to measure exhaust gas (NOx, SOx etc.) and PM (particulate matter), respectively. The results showed that the emissions of THC and CO produced from engine were increased with the increase of sulfur content in fuel oils at E2 and E3 cycle modes. The kinetic viscosity of the fuel increased as the sulfur content of the fuel increased, thereby the specific fuel oil consumption (SFC) of the engine improved. This result is considered to be due to improved combustion conditions due to increased average diameters of sprayed particles and due to increased kinetic viscosity under constant fuel injection pressure in this study. In the case of NOx emission, this study showed no significant change in amount of sulfur content.

Nowadays, considering global warming and enhanced prohibition to discharge pollutants at sea, all of existing operation-ships must lead to the reduction of fuel consumption. International standards of International Maritime Organization and EU rules governing harbor pollutants are being strengthened. Therefore, ship-owners and operators are seeking ways to reduce $CO_2$, SOx, and NOx emissions. Although world trade continues to expand, total fuel usage for sea transport tends to diminish. However, ICS(International Chamber of Shipping) has set a goal of reducing $CO_2$ emissions from shipping by 50% until 2050. In addition, with respect to the Paris Climate Change Accord in 2015, IMO proposes to set up a reduction target of GHG emission from existing operation-ships. For setting up a reduction target of GHG from international maritime transport, "A data collection system for fuel consumption" will be introduced in the near future. In order to effectively reduce the use of fuel in a ship in accordance with the trend of compulsory fuel saving from operation ships, this paper suggested adoption of an Incentive-Penalty scheme based on Emission-Trading-Scheme, Carbon Tax, and basic calculation formula after verifying the EEOI level for a year.

In this study, the generator engine of training ship M/S "HAE RIM" of Kunsan National University which is being operated for 20 years was used in the experiment. The experiment was carried out under the engine speed of 1200rpm, then the load was varied 30 kW intervals from 0 to 90 kW and the injection timing was varied $2^{\circ}$CA intervals from BTDC $19^{\circ}$ to $23^{\circ}$CA. In the case of advancing fuel injection timing from BTDC $21^{\circ}$CA to $23^{\circ}$CA, specific fuel consumption is decreased by 1.37%, NOx is increased by 11.59 %, soot is decreased by 23.5 % and $SO_2$ is decreased by 2.8 %. Accoring to the analysis of effects of fuel injection timing on combustion & exhaust emissions characteristics on an old marine diesel engine, it is proved that the optimum fuel injection timing is BTDC $23^{\circ}$ which is $2^{\circ}$ faster than that of original injection timing.
This paper estimates the effects of generation mix changes in the $7^{th}$ and $8^{th}$ Basic Plan for Long-term Power Supply and Demand from two aspects: economic efficiency through electricity prices and environmental performance through $CO_2$ and air pollutants(NOx, SOx, PM) emissions. Particularly, we examined additional generation mix conversion paths that take into account the trade-off between economic efficiency and environmental performance through scenario analysis. According to our results, the conversion from the $7^{th}$ plan to the $8^{th}$ plan should increase the electricity prices in the mid- and long-term, while reducing GHG and air pollutants emissions at the same time. The alternative generation mix that combines $7^{th}$ and $8^{th}$ plans shows that there exists a path to mitigate the trade-off between economic and environmental in the long-term. It will be next to impossible to derive a optimal generation mix that simultaneously considers the core values, such as supply stability, environmental performance, economic efficiency, energy safety and energy security, when establishing the power supply and demand plan. However, by exploring the effects of various generation mix paths and suggesting near-optimal paths, people can best choose their direction after weighhing all the paths when deciding on a forward-looking generation mix in the long term.

Research on exhaust aftertreatment devices to reduce air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions is being actively conducted. However, in the case of the particulate matters/nitrogen oxides (PM/NOx) simultaneous reduction device for ships, the problem of back pressure on the diesel engine and replacement of the filter carrier is occurring. In this study, for the optimal design of the integrated device that can simultaneously reduce PM/NOx, an appropriate standard was presented by studying the flow inside the device and change in back pressure through the inlet/outlet pressure. Ansys Fluent was used to apply porous media conditions to a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) by setting porosity to 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, and 70%. In addition, the ef ect on back pressure was analyzed by applying the inlet velocity according to the engine load to 7.4 m/s, 10.3 m/s, 13.1 m/s, and 26.2 m/s as boundary conditions. As a result of a computational fluid dynamics analysis, the rate of change for back pressure by changing the inlet velocity was greater than when inlet temperature was changed, and the maximum rate of change was 27.4 mbar. This was evaluated as a suitable device for ships of 1800kW because the back pressure in all boundary conditions did not exceed the classification standard of 68mbar.

The remanufacturing industry for automotive parts is a major issue which affects the environment protection and CO2 reduction throughout the world. Beside this, remanufacturing technologies of worn-out diesel engines have been developing to make as close to new as possible. In this study, the characteristics of the engine-power output and exhaust emissions of remanufactured diesel engine by hydrogen enrichment are evaluated by measuring the engine and vehicle test. Moreover, with worn-out diesel engine and first generation common-rail engine, we compared by testing their characteristics, resulting in the restoration of engine-power output more than 93%, as well as marvelously reduces the THC and NOx emission. At a guess, high pressure injection of diesel increases fuel atomization characteristics with excellence combustion efficiency, resulting in reduction of THC emission. Also, rapid cooling of EGR decreases combustion temperature, resulting in reduction of NOx emission. Consequently, these remanufacturing for diesel engine enables worn-out diesel engine to have restoration to the original state. Simultaneously achieved 2 goals called that CO2 emission reduction and protection of environment by remanufacturing engine.

Multiple devices have been installed to reduce exhaust emissions and to increase thermal efficiency. Those devices reduce the exhaust pipe opening area and increase the exhaust gas pressure. The pressure increase disturbs a gas flow and has a bad effect on the engine performance. However there is some study that NOx can be reduced with exhaust gas pressure increase. In this study an engine performance is tested with various opening ratios. The result shows that the fuel consumption rate is reduced in case of little amount of the pressure increase, and NOx is reduced with the pressure increase, while the concentration of the toxic exhaust gases are increased in the case of high back-pressure.

A diesel engine works in high compression ratio due to injection of diesel fuel after compression of air. Therefore the engine has a high thermal efficiency, while nitrogen oxide is produced a lot in high flame temperature regions. In order to solve the problem this study HHO gas is added into the intake air of the industrial diesel engine. The test conditions are loads of 0%, 50% and 100% and engine speeds of 700 to 1900 rpm. The results show the maximum torque and pressure is increased, fuel consumption, smoke and CO emissions are decreased and NOx emission is remained at same level.
