  • Ovotransferrin (OTF), an egg protein known as transferrin family protein, possess strong antimicrobial and antioxidant activity. This is because OTF has two iron binding sites, so it has a strong metal chelating ability. The present study aimed to evaluate the improved immune-enhancing activities of OTF hydrolysates produced using bromelain, pancreatin, and papain. The effects of OTF hydrolysates on the production and secretion of pro-inflammatory mediators in RAW 264.7 macrophages were confirmed. The production of nitric oxide (NO) was evaluated using Griess reagent and the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) were evaluated using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). And the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor [TNF]-α and interleukin [IL]-6) and the phagocytic activity of macrophages were evaluated using an ELISA assay and neutral red uptake assay, respectively. All OTF hydrolysates enhanced NO production by increasing iNOS mRNA expression. Treating RAW 264.7 macrophages with OTF hydrolysates increased the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and the phagocytic activity. The production of NO and pro-inflammatory cytokines induced by OTF hydrolysates was inhibited by the addition of specific mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) inhibitors. In conclusion, results indicated that all OTF hydrolysates activated RAW 264.7 macrophages by activating MAPK signaling pathway.

  • Background: In terms of physical performance, elastic tape (ET) is known to contribute to injury prevention and performance enhancement. Objects: This study aimed to compare and analyze the effect on lower extremity muscle activity of young adult women with and without ET during squats. Methods: In this study, six healthy, young women were recruited as participants in a university laboratory. Participants were allocated to two groups of three after measuring muscle activity in a pre-test, and the experiment was conducted for a total of two weeks (two sessions). First, 10 half squats were taped once in the first week, and 10 half squats were performed without taping in the second week. The other group did this in reverse and measured muscle activity after the squat was over. Results: As a result of this study, there was no significant difference in the quadriceps with or without ET (Z = -0.11, p > 0.05). Similarly, no significant difference was found in hamstring (Z = -0.31, p > 0.05). Conclusion: No beneficial effect was found on changes in muscle activity following ET application during squats. Further studies require randomized controlled trials that increase the number of participants and the intensity of the intervention, and measure pain, function, and performance rather than muscle properties depending on the biomechanical lifting mechanism.

  • Desmodium heterocarpon is one of vines belongs to Fabaceae family, mainly distributed in Asian countries such as Korea and Japan. This study was conducted to explore new nutraceutical resources from the plant kingdom possessing biological activities. To fulfill this purpose, the anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory activities of D. heterocarpon ethanol extract (DHEE) were evaluated by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity assay, reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging activity assay, nitric oxide (NO) inhibitory activity assay, and the analysis of related protein expressions by Western blot hybridization. DHEE exhibited potent anti-oxidative activity as confirmed by DPPH radical scavenging capacity against DPPH similar with ascorbic acid, a well-known anti-oxidative agent, used as a positive control. DHEE also effectively suppressed hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$)-induced ROS on RAW 264.7 murine macrophage cells. Furthermore, DHEE induced the expression of the anti-oxidative enzyme heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1), and its upstream transcription factor, nuclear factor-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) as a dose dependent manner. DHEE inhibited lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced nitric oxide (NO) formation as a consequence of inducible NO synthase (iNOS) down regulation. Taken together, these results suggest that DHEE has anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory activities and thus appears to be useful sources as potential anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory agents. The identification of active compounds that confer biological activities of DHEE might be needed.

  • Appressorial formation of Pyricularia oryzae on leaves showed no marked difference between highly resistant Tongil and susceptible Norm No. 6. Race N-2 of the blast fungus penetrated directly into motor cells of susceptible cultivar Norm No. 6, later extensively spreading hyphae were developed, while in the cultivar Tongil, after penetration, no further hyphal extension resulted. In discoloration of infected tissues, the highly resistant cultivar Tongil not only discolored rapidly, but also the percentage of discolored cells was higher than the susceptible cultivars, Jinheung and Norm No. 6. The respiratory rate, was generally higher in infected tissue than in healthy tissue. No significant difference in the respiration rate of resistant Suwon No. 180 was not found between the infected and healthy leaf tissue, whereas, in susceptible Jinheung, a marked increase in respiratory rate was caused by blast infection. The respiratory rate increased at the appearance of the first visible symptom in all cultivars resistant or susceptible. Higher peroxidase activity was found in infected tissues as compared with healthy tissue. Peroxidase activity increased in resistant and susceptible reactions. Particularly, in resistant reaction, the increase of the activity was more pronounced. In highly resistant reaction, there was no difference in peroxidase activity between healthy and infected tissues. Ascorbic acid oxidase, hydroquinone oxidase and catechol oxidase had the same trend as the peroxidase. In contrast, activity of catalase rather decreased in leaf tissues infected with compatible races of the fungus.

  • NO removal activity (per unit of mass) of the used catalyst was seriously decreased as low as 27% of the new catalyst. Since the surface area of the used catalyst was 63% of that of the new one, the mojor reason for the lessened activity of the used catalyst compared to the new one may be due to the decreased surface area by sintering and surface concentration of active materials. Poison may be regarded as another important factor, since it affect the active site of catalyst by heavy metals. To recycle the used catalyst, we focused on the removal of poisoning agents from the catalyst. By using $80^{\circ}C$ water for 30 min upto 2 h, the recycled catalyst demonstrated the best activity and efficiency, which may be due to the removal of both K and Na. Although the recovered activity (per unit of surface area) of the catalyst was 79% compared to the new one, the activity (per unit of mass) of the recovered catalyst was only 49% compared of the activity of fresh catalyst.

  • This study aims to compare and analyze the antioxidant effect of Cheonggukjang's traditional fermentation strain, Bacillus subtilis NG24 which was a control of the study, in order to see the biological activity effect of the new strain, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens NBF11-1 that was first found in the surface of the bamboo stem, but hasn't been insufficiently researched. In the antioxidant activity experiment of the Cheonggukjang extract, the B.amyloliquefaciens NBF11-1 sample showed a significant increase in the total polyphenol extract content, compared to B.subtilis NG24(p=0.032). Also, compared to B.subtilis NG24, the sample containing B.amyloliquefaciens NBF11-1 showed a significant increase in SOD-like Activity, DPPH radical scavenging, and NO radical scavenging, as the concentration rose(p<.05). Additionally, $IC_{50}$ in each antioxidant activity experiment significantly decreased in the B.amyloliquefaciens NBF11-1 sample like SOD-like Activity(p=0.045), DPPH radical scavenging(p=0.041), and NO radical scavenging(p=0.019), compared to B.subtilis NG24.

  • $N^1$-Benzyl-4-methylbenzene-1,2-diamine (JSH-21) and its analogs were chemically synthesized and their anti-inflammatory potentials investigated. JSH-21 inhibited nitric oxide (NO) production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated macrophages RAW 264.7 in a dose-dependent manner, with an $IC_{50}$ value of 9.2 ${\mu}M$, where pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate and parthenolide as positive controls exhibited $IC_{50}$ values of 29.3 and 3.6 ${\mu}M$, respectively. The inhibitory effect of JSH-21 on the NO production was attributable to its down-regulatory action on LPS-inducible NO synthase (iNOS), which was documented by iNOS promoter activity. In the mechanism of the anti-inflammatory action, JSH-21 exhibited inhibitory effects on LPS-induced DNA binding activity and transcriptional activity of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-$_KB$). Structural analogs of JSH-21 also inhibited both the LPS-induced NO production and NF-$_KB$). transcriptional activity, where diamine substitution at positions 1 and 2 of JSH-21 seems to play an important role in the anti-inflammatory activity.

  • n-Butanol and ethyl acetate extracts of thermal treatment yam (Dioscorea batatas $D_{ECNE.}$) belonging to the family Dioscoreaceae were measured for their radical scavenging activity and lipid peroxidation inhibition ability. In this study, ethyl acetate extract showed the most potent antioxidant activity evaluated by ferrous ion chelating activity and NO radical scavenging activity. Nevertheless, n-butanol extract was more effective in inhibiting linoleic acid peroxidation. A significant difference between n-butanol extract and ethyl acetate extract in nitrite scavenging activity ${\beta}$-carotene bleaching assays could not be found. Also, the results of this study showed that thermal treatment yam could be used as easily accessible source of natural antioxidants and as a possible food supplement.

  • The inhibitory effect and the structure-activity relationships of luteolin and its related derivatives isolated from Taraxacum mongolicum against MAO activities were investigated. The activity-guided isolation of extract from Taraxacum mongolicum led to the isolation of three flavonoids, luteolin, diosmetin, and luteolin-7-glucoside, a polyphenol, chlorogenic acid, a tyrosine and a uridine. The inhibitory activities of luteolin and its related derivatives against MAOs activities are dependent on their molecular structures. The presence of the phenolic hydroxy group at para-position is the active site for MAO-A inhibition as well as of MAO-B. The methoxy group has no potential on MAO-A inhibition. An additional phenolic hydroxy group at the ortho-position alleviates about 4-fold MAO-A inhibitory activity of phenolic hydroxy group at para-position. A carboxylic group seems to be critical for DBH inhibition and has no effects on MAO.
