  • In present study, we described the reliability of the dual priming oligonucleotide (DPO) multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTC) and non-Mycobacterium tuberculosis (NMT) in blood samples of the Korea native cattle, Hanwoo. Among 340 samples 22 (6.5%) were positive in using DPO multiplex PCR, 21 (6.2%) were positive in PCR. The relative agreement between 2 tests was 99.7%, and the agreement quotient (kappa), was 0.95 (excellent). In these results, we demonstrated the successful application of DPO multiplex PCR for the diagnosis of bovine tuberculosis in Hanwoo. Multiplex PCR, using DPO primers, can be useful for the simple diagnosis of bovine tuberculosis in bovine blood samples.

  • With the advent of robust deep learning method, Neural machine translation has recently become a dominant paradigm and achieved adequate results in translation between popular languages such as English, German, and Spanish. However, its results in under-resourced languages Korean and Vietnamese are still limited. This paper reports an attempt at constructing a bidirectional Korean-Vietnamese Neural machine translation system with the supporting of Korean analysis tool - UTagger, which includes morphological analyzing, POS tagging, and WSD. Experiment results demonstrate that UTagger can significantly improve translation quality of Korean-Vietnamese NMT system in both translation direction. Particularly, it improves approximately 15 BLEU scores for the translation from Korean to Vietnamese direction and 3.12 BLEU scores for the reverse direction.

  • The use of Shotcrete(Sprayed concrete) for the support of underground excavations was pioneered by the Civil engineering industry. Permanent shotcrete tunnel linings such as Single-shell, NMT(Norwegian Method of Tunnelling) have been constructed in many countries for reducing construction time and lowering construction costs instead of conventional in-situ concrete linings. Among essential technologies for successful application of Permanent Shotcrete Linings, high performance shotcrete having high strength, high durability, better pumpability has to be developed in advance. This paper presents the ideas and the first field test results of wet-mixed Steel Fiber Reinforced Shotcrete(SFRS) with powder types cement mineral accelerator. From the results, wet-mix SFRS with powdered accelerator exhibited good early strength improvement and less rebound ratio compared to the ordinary accelerator.

  • In this paper, we propose the noise suppressor with the psychoacoustic model and wavelet packet transform. The objective of the scheme is to enhance speech corrupted by colored or non-stationary noise. If corrupted noise is colored, subband approach would be more efficient than whole band one. To avoid serious residual noise and speech distortion, we must adjust the Wavelet Coefficient threshold. In this paper, the subband is designed matching with the critical band. And WCT is adapted by noise masking threshold(NMT) and segmental signal to noise ratio(seg_SNR). Consequently this work improve the PESQ-MOS about 0.23 in the case of coded speech.

  • Tunneling is a very dangerous and expansive work. Especially, the concrete lining works need many long hours and much cost. As an alternative, the unlined tunneling methods including NMT have been developed in various country. These methods have advantages in cost, time and quality. In Korea, many considerations have been conducted to apply the unlined tunneling method in comparatively good rock. Since primary reinforcements play the role of the final supporting system in unlined tunnels, the initial stiffness and long term durability of reinforcements are very important for tunnel safety. To establish the reinforcements standard suitable to Korea, we investigated the foreign standards and construction cases, comparing geological and construction conditions of foreign land and Korea. As the result, we have proposed the standard of primary supporting system for unlined tunnel in aspects of material, design, construction and quality control etc.

  • Although Candida albicans is the major fungal pathogen of candidemia, severe infections by non-albicans Candida (NAC) spp. have been increasing in recent years. Among NAC spp., C. glabrata has emerged as the second most common pathogen. However, few studies have been conducted to investigate its structure, epidemiology, and basic biology. In the present study, multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) was performed with a total of 102 C. glabrata clinical isolates that were isolated from various types of clinical specimen. For MLST, six housekeeping genes-FKS, LEU2, NMT1, TRP1, UGP1, and URA3-were amplified and sequenced. The results were analyzed using the C. glabrata database. Out of a total of 3,345 base-pair DNA sequences, 49 variable nucleotide sites were found, and the results showed that 12 different sequence types (ST) were identified from the 102 clinical isolates. The data also demonstrated that the undetermined ST1 was the most predominant ST in Korea. Further, seven undetermined STs (UST) containing UST2-8 were classified at specific loci. The data from this study may provide a fundamental database for further studies on C. glabrata, including its epidemiology and evolution. The data may also contribute to the development of novel antifungal agents and diagnostic tests.

  • Deep Learning is the most important key to the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI). There are several distinguishable architectures of neural networks such as MLP, CNN, and RNN. Among them, we try to understand one of the main architectures called Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) that differs from other networks in handling sequential data, including time series and texts. As one of the main tasks recently in Natural Language Processing (NLP), we consider Neural Machine Translation (NMT) using RNNs. We also summarize fundamental structures of the recurrent networks, and some topics of representing natural words to reasonable numeric vectors. We organize topics to understand estimation procedures from representing input source sequences to predict target translated sequences. In addition, we apply multiple translation models with Gated Recurrent Unites (GRUs) in Keras on English-Korean sentences that contain about 26,000 pairwise sequences in total from two different corpora, colloquialism and news. We verified some crucial factors that influence the quality of training. We found that loss decreases with more recurrent dimensions and using bidirectional RNN in the encoder when dealing with short sequences. We also computed BLEU scores which are the main measures of the translation performance, and compared them with the score from Google Translate using the same test sentences. We sum up some difficulties when training a proper translation model as well as dealing with Korean language. The use of Keras in Python for overall tasks from processing raw texts to evaluating the translation model also allows us to include some useful functions and vocabulary libraries as well.

  • A defect in uvsC of Aspergillus nidulans caused high methyl methansulfonate (MMS)-sensitivity, hyporecombination, and a lack of UV induced mutation. The uvsC gene of Aspergillus nidulans shares a sequence similarity with the RAD51 gene of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In this study, in vitro and in vivo tests were conducted in order to determine whether or not the UVSC protein had functional similarities to RAD51, the recombination enzyme in yeast. The purified recombinant UVSC protein, following expression in Escherichia coli, showed binding activity to single-stranded DNA (ssDNA), when both ATP and magnesium are present. In addition, ATPase activity was also demonstrated and its activity was stimulated in the presence of ssDNA. The UVSC protein that was expressed under the ADH promoter in S. cerevisiae suppressed in part the sensitivity to MMS of the rad51 null mutant. Similarly, when the uvsC cDNA was expressed from the nmt promoter, the MMS sensitivity of the rhp51 null mutant of Schizosaccharomyces pombe was partially complemented. These results indicate that the A. nidulans UVSC protein is a functional homologue of the RAD51 protein.
