A Study of NMEA 2000 Protocol Application for Ship Electrical Power Converter Monitoring System (NMEA 2000 프로토콜을 적용한 선박 전력 컨버터 모니터링 시스템에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, the FPGA-based SoC board (Xilinx Virtex-4 ML401 EVM) is adopted to control electrical power inverter system. For marine application, its performance is shown on PC-based system for monitoring electrical characteristics of a power inverter using by the NMEA 2000 protocol. This power inverter system is achieved in Real-Time monitoring and control by dual micro-processor operation on embedded FPGA-based SoC board. One micro processor is for control (Control processor) electrical power inverter using by PWM signal. And the other microprocessor (Communication processor) is for communication with PC-based monitoring system. The two-processor is communicating each other using by dual-port ram (DPRAM). PC-based system user can control and monitor information of the electrical power inverter via NMEA 2000 based communication processor. Control and monitoring information includes the inverter status and configuration. SoC board converts this information to Parameter Group Numbers (PGNs) in the NMEA 2000 protocol. This system can be applied to marine power electronics for distributed power generation, transmission or regulation systems on the ship.

  • The current marine communication networks are usually composed of NMEA0183, NMEA2000, and MiTS protocols which are located on the physical layer based on RS-422, RS-485, CAN, and EtherNet. This paper proposes a new bridge based on the DC power line communication technique supported from the NMEA0183 to design inside marine systems.

  • International network standards for SOLAS ship are composed of instrument network that controls and monitors machine in real time, shipboard control network that controls and monitors system through computer by human and telecommunication network that connects ship and shore. This paper describes development of stack for instrument network protocol complied with NMEA 2000 that is IEC 61162-3 international standards for SOLAS ship and also that of engine room monitoring system using the developed stack. Developed engine room monitoring system is certified by NMEA according to standards that require to pass about 1,600 test procedures.

  • The functionality of BNWAS and its operations are investigated through its international standard. But the BNWAS is being used currently in the ship had difficulty in monitoring. Several kinds of data are generated from many equipments in BNWAS, such as NMEA-0183 data or NMEA-2000. In this paper, we have proposed a method of the multimedia data transmission using a communication protocol based on slower NMEA-0183, which is mainly used in BNWAS. Data compression techniques are needed for smooth streaming services of the multimedia data in the low data rate over the NMEA-0183 interface. Although these data are mainly used for the instruments of ship, their efficient transmission may be needed if they are managed to control the BNWAS equipment with sensors.

  • The current marine internal communication systems are usually composed of NMEA0183, NMEA2000, and MiTS protocols which are located on the physical layer based on RS-422, RS-485, CAN, and EtherNet. However, general vessel communication method have a weak point that must establish the extra private line. But, the power line communication has advantage over general vessel communication method as it uses AC220V/DC24V without changing line. Therefore, we will propose a new bridge based on the DC-PLC(power Line communication) technique which support the NMEA0183 protocol inside vessel network systems.

  • Recently, the increase of loading amount on cargo ships due to the automation of loading process results in much complex ship operation. For this reason, NMEA-0183 based on RS-422,485 and NMEA-2000 based on CAN communication methods have been usually used as a standardized method in the marin electric interfacing equipments. In this paper, a general NMEA-0183 protocol was designed to support 7-channel NMEA-0183 serial communication data, which can receive 3-channel 16 bits ADC and 2-channel pulse using SPI(Serial Peripheral Interface). In particular, this method was designed for ship communication requires 7 important factors. Also in this study, using the minimization of the proposed method and realizing the monitoring system based on PC, the effectiveness of multichannel indicator system was proposed.

  • NMEA2000 protocol known as IEC61162-3 of Multi-talker, Multi-listener, PnP communication is adopted as standard network for SOLAS ship by ISO in 2008 for e-navigation ages. NMEA2000 network uses well known CAN in physical layer. In this paper, address claim function is implemented for protocol converter device which can be used easily in combination with CPU of non network device. We are going to implement full function of NMEA2000 protocol and provide guideline to develop ship equipment to be networked easily.

  • 최근 선박 및 물류 자동화는 물류 증대와 함께 선박의 운용을 더욱 복잡하게 만들고 있으며, 선박 내부의 통신 장비 및 통신 시스템의 구성 또한 매우 복잡하게 구성되어 있다. 때문에 지금 현재의 통신장비의 내부 통신 프로토콜은 일반적인 RS-422,485 기반의 NMEA-0183과 CAN 통신 기반의 NMEA-2000 기반으로 해상전자장비의 인터페이스 표준으로 법제화 되어있다. 본 논문에서는 가장 일반적인 NMEA-0183 프로토콜을 7-체널의 NMEA-0183 시리얼 통신 데이터를 지원하도록 설계하였으며, 그 외에 SPI 방식의 3-체널 16비트 ADC(Analog Digital Converter)와 SPI 방식의 2-체널 펄스(pulse) 입력을 받을 수 있도록 설계하였다. 특히, 선박용 통신장비의 중요한 7가지로 한정하여 설계하였다. 본 연구의 소형화를 통하여 이동이 가능하도록 하여 그 편리성을 제공하고, 소형 PC 기반의 중앙 모니터링 시스템을 구현하여 다체널 인디케이트 시스템의 효율성을 제시하고자 한다.

Implementation of an Auto-Steering System for Recreational Marine Crafts Using Android Platform and NMEA Network

  • This paper deals with development of an autopilot system for leisure yacht based on NMEA 2000 network and android platform. The developed system can operate both for manual steering and automatic navigation mode. In automatic steering mode, after manipulation of commands which are NMEA 0183 sentences by android platform, the developed system translates and sends the packets through NMEA 2000 network. Then the controller which is connected to NMEA 2000 network receives the commands and controls the boat's rudder system automatically. The automatic steering mode is achieved by cooperation of two controllers; one for controlling the rudder system, and the other for controlling the vessel's heading. To control the vessel's rudder and heading angle two PID controllers are developed with an adjustable dead-band gain. Also, in order to eliminate the steady-state error occurred by applying dead-band, an integral controller which specifically supervises the system's behavior inside the dead-band area is developed. In this paper, at the first stage, simulations are accomplished using computer in order to examine the feasibility of the proposed based on simulation results. In the next step, the system on a real hydraulic steering model is implemented and at the end the performance examination by implementing it on a real boat and doing test navigation is executed.
