This study was performed to identify the effect of calendering variables on the properties of coated paper such as sheet gloss, surface roughness, opacity, etc. The effect of calendering variables including the number of nips, pressure, machine speed and moisture content on the properties of coated paper was investigated. The calender was installed with two steel rolls and one cotton-made roll. With this calender, the coated sheets were passed through the calender from 1 to 4 times, applying the linear pressure on calender rolls, 5 through 100kg/cm and operating the machine speed 3 to 12m/min. Also, the moisture content of coated sheet was varied about 5 and 10%. It was found that sheet gloss and surface roughness of coated paper was increased with increasing the number of passing nips, linear roll pressure and the moisture content of coated paper. But it was shown that the opacity and brightness of coated paper were decreased under the above conditions due to the blackening. It was also suggested that the soft nip possibly increased the thermoplasticity of coating layer with the heat of steel roll, resulting in the reinforcement of surface properties positively. The sheet gloss and surface roughness of coated paper could be improved by the longer dwell time over the rolls.
Purpose: This study compared the pain and skin reactions of neonates according to the method of removing the adhesive eyepatch used for phototherapy. Methods: The subjects included 20 neonates admitted at C University Hospital. In group 1 (n=10), DuoDERM dressing was attached under the adhesive eyepatch, which was removed with water, while in group 2 (n=10), the eyepatch was attached on the skin and removed with oil. Heart rate, oxygen saturation, the Neonatal Infant Pain Scale (NIPS), crying time were measured. Data were analyzed using repeated-measures analysis of variance. Results: No interaction was found between group and timing for heart rate and oxygen saturation. In group 1, the NIPS score was higher and the crying time was longer than in group 2. No difference was observed in the erythema score between the groups. Conclusion: Removing the adhesive eyepatch using oil can be used as a nursing intervention to reduce pain and improve comfort in neonates.

Recently, the application range of organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) technology has been expanding, requiring membranes with better performance. In this work, thin film composite (TFC) OSN membrane was fabricated. First, ultrafiltration support membrane was prepared via nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) technique using polysulfone (PSf) and polyethersulfone (PES). Then, the effect of pore forming additives such as polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and pluronic F-127 were employed to improve the membrane permeance. The well-known interfacial polymerization technique was employed using MPD-TMC chemistry to form a thin film on top of the fabricated support, and its solvent permeance and nanofiltration performance was characterized. It was found that polyethersulfone support exhibited more reliable performance compared to polysulfone, and PVP additive was more effective compared to Pluronic F-127. As for the oSN performance, polar aprotic solvents like acetonitrile show significantly higher flux (986.5 L·m-2·h-1·bar-1) compared to water and EtOH (9.5 L·m-2·h-1·bar-1).

In this work, the morphology of polyvinylidene-co-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-co-HFP) membranes were systemically investigated using phase inversion technique, to target membrane contactor applications. As the presence of macrovoids degrade the mechanical integrity of the membranes and jeopardize the long-term stability of membrane contactor processes (e.g. wetting), a wide range of dope compositions and casting conditions was studied to eliminate the undesired macrovoids. The type of solvent had significant effect on the membrane morphology, and the observed morphology were correlated to the physical properties of the solvent and solvent-polymer interactions. In addition, to fabricate macrovoid-free structure, the effects of different coagulation temperatures, inclusion of additives, and addition of nonsolvents were investigated. Due to the slow crystallization rate of P(VDF-co-HFP) polymer, it was found that obtaining porous membrane without macrovoids is difficult using only nonsolvent-induced phase separation method (NIPS). However, combined other phase inversion methods such as evaporation-induced phase separation (EIPS) and vapor-induced phase separation (VIPS), the desired membrane morphology can be obtained without any macrovoids.
In the present study, superflux nickel capillary supports for gas and vapor separation membranes were prepared by a combined process of NIPS and sintering. Nickel capillary precursors were prepared by NIPS process from PSf-Ni-DMAC-PEG400 dope solution and was sintered at various temperatures in $H_2$ atmosphere to reliably produce Ni capillary support. The optimized Ni capillary support has an outer and inner diameters of 722 and $550{\mu}m$, and its thickness was $94{\mu}m$. It has 3-dimensional pore channel network and its porosity and mean pore diameter was 26% and $4{\mu}m$, respectively. Also, its mechanical strength was tested in tensile mode: its fracture load was 2.84 kgf and the fracture elongation was 13%. Finally, its single gas permeance was measured: He, $N_2$, $O_2$, and $CO_2$ permeance was 432,327, 281,119, 264,259, and 193,143 GPU, respectively. The superflux behavior could be explained from viscous flow through the macropores having a diameter of $4{\mu}m$ and narrow thickness. It could be concluded that the superflux behavior of the Ni capillary support was from the 3-D pore channel network and the small thickness.

In this study, waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) was recycled to produce a support and then polyetherimide (PEI) was used for environmentally friendly organic solvent nanofiltration. The prepared composite membrane was first prepared by electrospinning a PET support, then casted on the support using PEI having excellent solvent resistance, and organic solvent nanoparticles using a Non-solvent Induced Phase Separation (NIPS) method. A filtration membrane was prepared. First, the fiber diameter and tensile strength of the PET scaffold prepared prior to membrane fabrication were identified through morphology analysis, and the optimal scaffold for the organic solvent nanofiltration membrane was identified. Afterward, the PET/PEI composite membrane prepared was checked for the DEA removal rate of Congo red having a molecular weight of 697 g/mol in ethanol to understand the performance as an organic solvent nanofiltration membrane according to the concentration of PEI. Finally, the removal rate of Congo red was 90% or more.

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) ultrafiltration (UF) membrane was modified by silica sol in the coagulation bath during non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process. The effects of silica sol concentrations on the morphology, surface property, mechanical strength and separation property of PVC UF membranes were systematically investigated. PVC membranes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), contact angle goniometry and tensile strength measurement. The results showed that silica had been successfully assembled on the surface of PVC UF membrane. With the increase of silica sol concentration in the coagulation bath, the morphologies of PVC UF membranes changed from cavity structure to finger-like pore structure and asymmetric cross-section structure. The hydrophilicity and permeability of PVC UF membranes were further evaluated. When silica sol concentration was 20 wt.%, the modified PVC membrane exhibited the highest hydrophilicity with a static contact angle of $36.5^{\circ}$ and permeability of $91.8(L{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}h^{-1})$. The structure of self-assemble silica had significant impact on the surface property, morphology, mechanical strength and resultant separation performance of the PVC membranes.
Flat sheet membranes were prepared with polysulfone (PSF) by an immersion precipitation phase inversion method. Membranes were prepared with PSF/N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP)/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/phosphoric acid casting solution and water coagulant. By using the successive process of the vapor-induced phase inversion (VIPS) followed by the nonsolvent-induced phase inversion (NIPS), the effect of phosphoric acid addition to casting solution on morphology and permeability of membrane was studied. The mean pore size, the porosity, and the water flux of membranes were increased by the addition of small amount of phosphoric acid. Furthermore, the morphology of the prepared membranes were changed from a dense sponge-like structure to highly enhanced asymmetric structure. PSF/NMP/PVP/phosphoric acid/2-butoxyethanol (BE) casting solution were prepared and cast the successive VIPS-NIPS process with same experimental condition. Due to the addition of BE to casting solution, the mean pore size and almost 0.1 ${\mu}m$ and the water flux increased about 10 to 12 $L/cm^2{\cdot}min{\cdot}bar$.
In this work, we fabricated PS-b-P4VP block copolymer membranes from self-assembly and non-solvent induced phase separation (SNIPS), which combines the block copolymer self-assembly and conventional NIPS process. While previous studies mostly focused on the fabrication of well-defined structures, we systematically examined various processing parameters such as polymer concentration, solvent evaporation duration, solvent composition, and humidity, to optimized the membrane structures. As a result, the morphology of PS-b-P4VP membranes was optimized at a certain polymer concentration in solution and composition of volatile solvent at low humidity conditions, resulting in SNIPS separation membranes with well-defined nanopores on the surface, 75% of membrane porosity, and 18% of surface porosity.
