  • Imaging in the Short Wave Infrared (SWIR) provides several advantages over the visible and near-infrared regions: enhanced image resolution in in foggy or dusty environments, deep tissue penetration, surveillance capabilities with eye-safe lasers, assessment of food quality and safety. Commercially available SWIR imagers are fabricated by integrating expensive epitaxial grown III-V compound semiconductor sensors with Si-based readout integrated circuits(ROIC) by indium bump bonding Infrared image sensors made of solution-processed quantum dots have recently emerged as candidates for next-generation SWIR imagers. They combine ease of processing, tunable optoelectronic properties, facile integration with Si-based ROIC and good performance. Here, we review recent research and development trends of various application fields of SWIR image sensors and nano-materials capable of absorption and emission of SWIR band. With SWIR sensible nano-materials, new type of SWIR image sensor can replace current high price SWIR imagers.

  • In materials science, one of the new concerns in the construction industry, it is well established that mineral dust from rocks (stones) has adverse effects on human health. For instance, it is suspected that some mineral dusts in particular leads to occupational diseases, including lung cancer. The present research concerned the relationship between cancer and those workers who work in Turkish construction industry and quarries and are exposed to silica mineral dust from natural stones. One focus was cancer prevention methods applied in-site. In mining and construction industry where stone dust is widely used, silicosis induced lung cancer is frequently seen. Cancer cases which are seen across the regions mostly affected by silica containing dust in Turkey were identified and a survey was conducted of the methods to protect workers in the construction industry from exposure to silica dust.

  • The conventional SLT(Shear Lag Theory) which has been proven that it can not provide sufficiently accurate strengthening predictions in elastic regime when the fiber aspect ratio is small. This paper is an extented work to improve it by modifying the load transfer mechanism called NSLT(New Shear Lag Theory), which takes into account the stress transfer across the fiber ends and the SCF(Stress Concentration Factor) that exists in the matrix regions near the fiber ends. The key point of the model development is to determine the major controlling factor among the material and geometrical coefficients. It is found that the most affecting factor is the fiber/matrix elastic modulus ratio. It is also found that the proposed model gives a good result that has the capability to correctly predict the elastic properties such as interfacial shear stresses and local stress variations in the small fiber aspect ratio regime.

  • Miscanthus has been considered as the most promising bioenergy crop for lignocellulosic biomass production. In Korea, M. sacchariflorus and M. sinensis can be found easily in all regions. It is a great advantage to utilize as important species with respect to genetic and cross-breeding programs materials for creation of novel hybrids. For successful breeding programs, it is important to precisely understand the variability of morphological and growth characteristics among Miscanthus species as breeding parent materials. In this study, morphological and growth characteristics were observed in 960 germplasms of two Miscanthus species (M. sacchariflorus and M. sinensis) for growing seasons over three years. Due to the inherent characteristics of these species, the germplasm of M. sacchariflorus among the collected germplasm were reduced in plant height than in the collection area. In M. sinensis, the plant height of germplasm collected mainly from Jeju-do increased more than those collected from collection area. Sixty-one of the collected 960 germplasms were selected and investigated to the morphological characteristics. Based on the investigated morphological data, the phylogenic tree was developed. As the results, it was confirmed that there exist germplasm in which the characteristics of M. sacchariflorus and M. sinensis are mixed. This study of Miscanthus may provide an important information in order to expedite the introduction as breeding materials for creation of new hybrid.

  • Structural design includes calculation of the wind speed as one of the major steps in the design process for wind loading. Accurate determination of design wind speed is vital in achieving safety that is consistent with the economy of construction. It is noticeable that many countries and regions such as Hong Kong, Japan and Australia regularly make amendments to improve the accuracy of wind load estimations for their wind codes and standards. This study compares the latest Hong Kong wind code published in 2019, which is generally known as the Code of Practice on Wind Effects in Hong Kong - 2019, with the latest revision of the AIJ Recommendations for Loads on Buildings - 2015 (Japan), and the Australian/New Zealand Standard, AS/NZS 1170.2:2021. The comparisons include the variations between the design wind speed and the vertical profiles of wind speed multipliers. The primary purpose of this study was to show any differences in the basic design wind speed and exposure factor estimations among the three economies located in the Western Pacific Ocean. Subsequently, the reasons for such underlying variations between the three documents, are discussed, together with future development trends.

  • A new waxy corn hybrid 'Daedukchal 1' was developed from single cross between CNU 504 and CNU 2396 at Chungnam National University in 2007. Inbred CNU 504 used as a seed parent and inbred CNU 2396 as a pollen parent were collected throughout domestic regions. Tasseling date of this hybrid was seven days later than that of check hybrid, 'Chalok 1'. 'Daedukchal 1' was 19.7 cm in ear length and 4.5 cm in ear diameter. On yield trial, ear length of this hybrid was increased 29.7% compared with a check hybrid, 'Chalok 1'. 'Daedukchal 1' had white kernels and good eating quality due to high sugar content and thinner pericarp. The ratio of kernel set length/ear length was similar to 'Chalok 1'. It is moderately resistant to southern leaf blight and northern leaf blight but susceptible to corn borer. The yields of 'Daedukchal 1' in fresh ear weight and in number of fresh ear were 16% and 8%, respectively, higher than those of a check hybrid in regional yield trials for two years. Seed production for this hybrid was better because of the consistency of tasseling dates.

  • Metagenomic analysis of the human intestinal microbiota has extended our understanding of the role of these bacteria in improving human intestinal health; however, a number of reports have shown that current total fecal DNA extraction methods and 16S rRNA universal primer sets could affect the species coverage and resolution of these analyses. Here, we improved the extraction method for total DNA from human fecal samples by optimization of the lysis buffer, boiling time (10 min), and bead-beating time (0 min). In addition, we developed a new long-range 16S rRNA universal PCR primer set targeting the V6 to V9 regions with a 580 bp DNA product length. This new 16S rRNA primer set was evaluated by comparison with two previously developed 16S rRNA universal primer sets and showed high species coverage and resolution. The optimized total fecal DNA extraction method and newly designed long-range 16S rRNA universal primer set will be useful for the highly accurate metagenomic analysis of adult and infant intestinal microbiota with minimization of any bias.
