  • High functional micro devices are demanded in a variety of fields. For realising such demands, development of high-precision micro-components installed in the devices are needed. To achieve high-precision in the mold processing of micro-components, the development of mold materials, i.e., the development of WC-Co hardmetal with higher hardness and fracture strength is essential, together with the developments of processing technology of high precision mold and mold-forming technology of high precision micro-components, etc. The role of development of the finer submicro-grained hardmetal in a NEDO national project aiming the integrated development of these all technologies and some results are mainly explained.

  • New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) promotes R&D that individual private sector enterprises can not undertake by themselves. To do this, it utilizes an extensive network that supports cooperation between industries, universities, and public research organizations. NEDO's government-funded R&D budget for FY2005 totals approximately 148.8 billion yen. Fuel cells and hydrogen technology development project is one of NEDO's emphasizing projects. The budget size was ${\yen}$20.8 billion, corresponding to about 60% of annual expenditure of Japanese government for fuel cells in FY2005. These projects consist of 8 programs as follows.

  • The characteristic features of solid oxide fuel cells are reviewed from the viewpoint of the thermodynamic variables to be developed inside cells/stacks particularly in terms of gradients of chemical potential, electrical potential and temperature and corresponding flows of air, fuel, electricity and heat. Examples of abrupt destruction of SOFC systems were collected from failures in controlling their steady flows, while continuous degradation was caused by materials behaviors under gradients of chemical potentials during a long operation. The local equilibrium approximation has been adopted in NEDO project on the durability/reliability of SOFC stacks/systems; this makes it possible to examine the thermodynamic stability/reactivity as well as mass transfer under the thermodynamic variable gradients. Major results of the NEDO project are described with a focus on degradation/deterioration of electrolyte and electrode materials.

  • A five-year project for Nb-based single flux quantum (SFQ) circuits supported by Japan's Ministry of Economy Trade and Industry (METI) in Japan was started in September 2002. Since April 2003, the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) has supported this Superconductor Network Device Project. The aim of the project is to improve the integration level of Nb-based SFQ circuits to several ten thousand Josephson junctions, in comparison with their starting integration level of only a few thousand junctions. Actual targets are a 20 GHz dual processor module for the servers and a 0.96 Tbps switch module for the routers. Starting in April 2003, the Nb project was merged with SFQ circuit research using a high-T$_{c}$ superconductor (HTS). The HTS research targets are a wide-band AD converter for mobile-phone base stations and a sampling oscilloscope for wide-band waveform measurements.

  • In Japan, a long-waited civil aero engine development project has been recently started by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, NEDO. “High efficiency,” “environmentally friendliness” and “low-cost” are the key words of the target engine. The target engine is of l0000-lb thrust with project consists of three phases: Feasibility studies and market research in the first phase, FY 2003, engine component development in the second phase, FY 2004-2006, and core and full engine demonstrators in the third phase, FY 2007-2009. In league with this government/industry joint funded project, Institute of Space Technology and Aeronautics, JAXA, has initiated “Clean Engine Technology” project.

  • ESPR project started in 1999 with METI and NEDO support as five-years program in order to develop necessary technologies for the next-generation SST engine. In ESPR program, jet noise reduction technologies are focused as environmentally compatible technologies, which are critical to realize next-generation SST. In designing a lobed mixer nozzle which is a jet noise suppression system, there are many difficulties to understand the detailed flow phenomena occurred in the system because of its complexity. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) was applied to the lobed mixer nozzle flow analysis in ESPR project. The results demonstrated that LES approach was capable of predicting mixing characteristics of a complicated flow.
