ACCURACY IMPROVEMENT OF LOBLOLLY PINE INVENTORY DATA USING MULTI SENSOR DATASETS

  • Timber inventory management includes to measure and update forest attributes, which is crucial information for private companies and public organizations in property assessment and environment monitoring. Field measurement would be accurate, but time-consuming and inefficient. For the reason, remote sensing technology has been an alternative to field measurement from an economic perspective. Among several sensors, LiDAR and Radar interferometry are known for their efficiency for forest monitoring because they are less influenced by weather and light conditions, and provide reasonably accurate vertical/horizontal measurement for a large area in a short period. For example, Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) and National Elevation Dataset (NED) in the U.S. can provide tree height information and DSM. On the other hand, LiDAR DSM (the first return) and DEM (the last return) can also present tree height estimation. With respect to project site of loblolly pine plantation in Louisiana in the U.S., the accuracy of SRTM C-Band approach estimating tree height was assessed by the LiDAR approaches. In addition, SRTM X-Band and NED were also compared with the results. Plantation year in inventory GIS, which is directly related to forest age, is high correlated with the difference between SRTM C-Band and NED. As a byproduct, several stands of age mismatch could be recognized using an outlier detection algorithm, and optical satellite image (ETM+) were used to verify the mismatch. The findings of this study were (1) the confirmation of usefulness of the SRTM DSM for forest monitoring and (2) Multi-sensors- Radar, LiDAR, ETM+, MODIS can be used for accuracy improvement of forest inventory GIS altogether.

Interdiffusion Studies of βNiAl Bond Coats: Understanding the Zr, Pt, and Al Migration Trends and Their Beneficial Effects

  • The oxidation resistance of the diffusion aluminide bond coat (BC) is compromised largely by interdiffusion (ID) effects on coated turbine blades of aeroengines. The present study is designed to understand the influence of ID on βNiAl coatings or BC. In this regard, nickel substrate and CMSX-4 superalloy are deposited. In total, four sets of BCs are developed, i.e. pure βNiAl (on Ni substrate), simple βNiAl (on CMSX-4 substrate), Zr-βNiAl (on CMSX-4 substrate) and Pt-βNiAl (on CMSX-4 substrate). The main aim of this study is to understand the interdiffusion of Al, Zr and Pt during preparation and oxidation. In addition, the beneficial effects of both Zr and platinum are assessed. Pure βNiAl and simple βNiAl show Ni-out-diffusion, whereas for platinum inward diffusion to the substrate is noticed under vacuum treatment. Interestingly, Zr-βNiAl shows the least ID in all BCs and exhibit stability under both vacuum and oxidation treatments. However, its spallation resistance is slightly lower than that of Pt-βNiAl BC. All BCs show similar oxide growth trends, except for Zr-βNiAl, which exhibits two-stage oxidations, i.e. transient and steady-state. Moreover, it is suggested that the localized spallation in all BCs is caused by βNiAl - γ'-Ni3Al transformation.

Landsat TM 영상을 이용한 교목연령 추정에 영창을 주는 영상 밴드 및 식생지수에 관한 연구 (Study on Correlation Between Timber Age, Image Bands and Vegetation Indices for Timber Age Estimation Using Landsat TM Image)

  • 본 논문은 Landsat TM 영상을 활용하여 교목연령 추정과 이와 관련이 있는 영상의 밴드값과 식생지수에 대한 상관관계 연구를 수행하였다. 기본적으로 본 연구에서는 취득시기가 다른 Landsat TM 영상 (1990, 1994, 1998년)과 Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM)과 National Elevation Dataset(NED) 영상의 차분영상이 사용되었으며 밴드 4, 5, 7 영상, 태슬모자형 변환을 통한 녹색식생지수, 토양수분지수 영상, 정규식생지수 (NDVI), 적외선지수 (II), 식생상태지수 (VCI), 토양보정식생지수 (SAVI) 영상은 Landsat TM 영상에서 추출되었다. 각각의 영상에서 추출된 값인 총 1992개 자료를 회귀분석을 통하여 분석하였고 연구 결과 교목연령을 추정하는데 있어서 가장 높은 결정계수($R^2$)값을 보이는 요소로는 태슬모자형 변환 토양수분지수. 적외선지수 (II), 식생상태지수 (VCI) 영상이며 이들 값이 교목연령을 추정하는데 가장 많은 영향이 있음을 알 수 있다.

The Study of Mapping Coordination S/W Based on the Internet Shopping Mall for Silver Apparel

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the effective customized elderly fashion marketing process based on the web site, where older customer will be able to choose various fabrics and to try them out. This aims to establish new prototype of internet shopping mall for customized elderly fashion clothing. In this study, new method of product presentation on the online shopping mall is proposed to offer product information through 3D virtual reality. With the online shopping mall(SATC Mall) as a showcase, we presented virtual mapping system so that it enable the customers to select the fabrics and to see exactly how chosen fabric will look when applied to image of clothing. As an initial test of the application of simulation to measure 3D visualization of product, mapping software Vision Easy Map Pro Version 6.0(NedGraphics) Vision Easy Map Viewer Version 5.0(NedGraphics) were chosen and applied. By using this mapping system, the fabric change of the apparel product could be made on the internet shopping web site. However, this approach has been successful applied for presenting and customizing garment products. Future research will focus on the integration of mapping coordination into SATC Mall.

Effect of nucleating agents and stabilisers on the synthesis of Iron-Oxide Nanoparticles-XRD analysis

  • Iron nanoparticles were made by using the modified coprecipitation technique. Usually the characteristics of synthesised particles depend upon the process parameters such as the ratio of the iron ions, the pH of the solution, the molar concentration of base used, type of reactants and temperature. A modified coprecipitation method was adopted in this study. A magnetic stirrer was used for mixing and the morphology and nature of particles were observed after synthesis. Nanoparticles were characterised through XRD. Obtained nanoparticles showed the formation of magnetite and maghemite under citric acid and oxalic acid as stabilisers respectively. The size of nanoparticle was greatly affected by the use of different types of stabilisers. Results show that citric acid greatly reduced the obtained particle size. Particle size as small as 13 nm was obtained in this study. The effects of different kinds of nucleating agents were also observed and two different types of nucleating agents were used i.e. potassium hydroxide (KOH) and copper chloride ($CuCl_2$). Results show that the use of nucleating agent in general pushes the growth phase of nanoparticles towards the end of coprecipitation reaction. The particles obtained after addition of nucleating agent were greater in size than particles obtained by not utilising any nucleating agent. These particles have found widespread use in medical sciences, energy conservation and electronic sensing technology.

  • This paper introduces a GPS-aided dead reckoning algorithm that asymptotically estimates the heading bias error of a magnetic compass based on geodetic north, improves the position error accumulated by dead reckoning, and helps the estimated position of an AUV to represent a position in the NED coordinate system, by receiving GPS position information when surfaced. Based on the results of a simulation, the locational error was bounded with a modest distance, after estimating the AUV position and heading bias error of the magnetic compass when surfaced. In other words, it was verified that proposed algorithm improves the position error in the NED coordinate system.

Immediate and long-term effects of lime and wheat straw on consistency characteristics of clayey soil

  • Clayey soils with swelling and shrinkage characteristics have been major causes for many problems in roads, buildings and other civil engineering infrastructure in various areas of Pakistan, particularly where there are several patches of such soils on either side of Indus River. As the consistency characteristics are directly related with the variation of moisture content; therefore, this study was explicitly focused to investigate the effect of lime and wheat straw on the consistency characteristics of clayey soils with relatively high swelling and shrinkage characteristics. The consistency test results indicate that by the increase in lime content there is a decrease in the plasticity index of soil; for instance, 10% lime content resulted to 59% decrease in the plasticity index value. On the other hand; the addition of wheat straw resulted in a significant increase in the plasticity index; for instance, 10% wheat straw content resulted to a 120% increase in the plasticity index. This study has further shown that the shrinkage and swelling of clayey soils which resulting to several problems in the civil engineering infrastructures may adequately be managed through mixing an appropriate amount of lime and wheat straw as soil stabilizing agent for both immediate and long-term effects.

「모험」에 나타난 자기기만과 외로움 (Self-deception and Loneliness in "Adventure")

  • In "Adventure" Alice Hindman tries to express her repressed sexual instinct with impulsive adventures but becomes a grotesque through her own self-deception and extreme loneliness. She has a passionate relationship with Ned Currie at 16, which defines her identity and molds her entire life. She does believe that Ned may return and stick to his disingenuous word and promises, and holds on to it as the only and absolute truth in her life. Her distortion of reality is in fact based on her self-deception and falsehood she creates. Seized by a strange urge, her second adventure indicates that she wants to feel closer to another grotesque that can understand her loneliness, and that her desire for communication transcends her sexual desire. At the end of the story, she seems to realize that she will die in her bed alone, misunderstood and unloved. But this conclusion shows that, despite the opportunity and potential of another choice, she never makes positive choices and refuses to accept responsibility for her actions. She rather creates an excuse with empty words and shows the limits so as not to get out of her own self-deception. Instead of focusing on Alice's strange behavior and blaming her, Anderson emphasizes the importance of understanding and communication while exploring the sorrow and loneliness of a woman who wants to be loved but is obsessed with self-deception in Winesburg.
