  • This study was to analyze the soil environmental characteristics and vegetation status of green roof in Daejeon Metropolitan City. The investigated floras of vascular plants are 17 families, 26 genera, 28 species in Seo-Gu Daejeon District Office Building (SG), 25 families, 49 genera, 56 species in Galma Public Library (GP), and 34 families, 57 genera, 60 species in Daejeon City Hall (DC) respectively. Although the larger area shows the more numbers of species in introduced plants and naturalized plant, the naturalized plant ratios were similar with each other. They were 10.71%, 10.71%, and 11.67% at SG, GP, and DC respectively. As a result of analysis on soil physical property, soil depths including vegetation soil and drainage soil of 3 green roofs were 30cm. The depths of vegetation soil at SG, GP, and DC were 0~8cm, 0~10cm, 0~10cm respectively. As a results of soil chemical properties of our study, soil pH of vegetation soil and drainage soil were a range of 6.42 and 7.43, and a range of 6.55 and 7.43 on the average respectively. Available-P contents of vegetation soil and drainage soil were a range of 153.33 and 366.33mg/kg, and a range of 136.67 and 242.67 mg/kg which is very high, respectively. Carbon contents in soil at vegetation soil and drainage soil were a range of 3.16 and 6.38%, and a range of 1.63 and 2.47% respectively. Carbon storage per square meter within 30 cm were 2.76 kg, 2.99 kg, and 3.66 kg at SG, GP, and DC respectively.

  • Baekdudaegan, the largest mountain range in eastern Asia, is a biodiversity hotspot in Korea that may have served as a glacial refugium. This study presents the flora of vascular plants on Deok-chi upto the Yuk-sim-nyeong area of the Baekdudaegan conservation area. The survey area was divided into four subareas and fieldwork was conducted for a total of twelve days in 2015. Voucher specimens were collected during the survey and were deposited at Daejeon University. A list of vascular plants was prepared based on the voucher specimens. The results of the survey showed that a total of 441 taxa, consisting of 100 families, 265 genera, 398 species, 9 subspecies, 32 varieties, and 2 forms, were found in the survey area. There was one endangered species, Aconitum coreanum, in the Bonghwasan Mt. area. Sixteen endemic taxa, 74 floristic regional indicator plants, as designated by the Ministry of the Environment, and eleven naturalized plants were distributed. The results of this study can serve as basic information to establish conservation and management plans for the Baekdudaegan conservation area.

  • The origin of natural planting, which is getting the spotlight in modern time facing natural and environmental problems, can be found from wild gardens. They were started by William Robinson and concretely embodied by Gertrude Jekyll. It is worth shedding new light on wild gardens, as they served as a pathbreaker for ecological design and an important foundation for the specialization of naturalism, which are part of the most important topics in modern gardens. This study aimed to infer the conceptual model of wild gardens and identify their historic significance by comparatively analyzing Robinson's Gravetye Manor and Jekyll's Munstead Wood. The results are: Firstly, they inherited inspirations for spatial organization from basic cottage gardens and introduced informal forms. Secondly, in terms of the use of materials, they had observed various climates in their journeys so that they could use both native and naturalized plants based on their understanding of the plants' hardiness and exotic species. They also displayed interests in plants in the woodlands and forests. Thirdly, in terms of design techniques, they investigated the colors and textures of individual plants and their relationships to produce a variety of views that resembled nature in microcosm. Fourthly, in terms of maintenance, their basic orientation was the minimum maintenance to allow plants to live according to their nature.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide the baseline data for conservation and management of the ecosystem of urban forest by surveying and analysing the vascular plants distributed in Hwangseong Park, Gyeongju-si. The results of the survey of vascular plants from April 2018 to May 2020 were summarized as 338 taxa including 78 families, 222 genera, 296 species, 5 subspecies, 18 varieties, 6 forms, 4 hybrids and 9 cultivars, and 110 taxa of planted species and 235 taxa of native species were identified. The representative planting species was Liriope muscari. The 7 taxa of rare plants and 5 taxa of Korean endemic plants were investigated. The specific plants by floristic region were totally 24 taxa, which were 1 taxa of grade V, 4 taxa of grade IV, 7 taxa of grade III, 4 taxa of grade II and 8 taxa of grade I. The 57 taxa of naturalized plants and 6 taxa of invasive alien plants were showed. In particular, Chionanthus retusus represent traditional landscape trees in Korea and have high ecological value. Therefore, the old trees of Chionanthus retusus will have to be managed by assigning a number for each individual. The invasive alien plants will need periodic control and development of programs that can work in conjunction with civic groups.

  • The succulent herbaceous perennial Sedum sarmentosum commonly grows in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. It is a species native to China, most likely introduced into Korea due to its edible and medicinal uses. If plants were introduced from a single source, we would expect no or low levels of genetic variation in Korean populations. Alternatively, if plants were introduced from multiple sources, we would expect, in contrast, high levels of genetic diversity. To test which is more likely, we surveyed the degree of allozyme variation in ten populations of this species from southern Korea. We found that S. sarmentosum was monomorphic at all fifteen allozyme loci. However, two congeners (S. polytrichoides and S. kamtschaticum) and two related species (Hylotelephium ussuriense and H. verticillatum) maintain moderate to high levels of genetic diversity ($H_e=0.144$, 0.203, 0.201, and 0.204, respectively). We suggest that southern Korean populations of S. sarmentosum likely descended from a single introduction of a few plants and then became naturalized exclusively via vegetative spreading (as plants in Korea, but also as occurs in other parts of its native and naturalized range, are sterile).

A total of 59 taxa were designated as controlled Korean biological resources, requiring special permission for export to outside countries. Two taxa were listed on the Red List of Korea, including one Near Threatened (NT) taxon (Hololeion maximowiczii Kitam.) and one Least Concern (LC) taxon (Iris minutoaurea Makino).

  • In this study, the vascular plants of the Mt. Deokhangsan protected area were surveyed for the purpose of forest genetic resources conservation in Gangwon-do, South Korea. The flora on Mt. Deokhangsan were classified as follows 537 taxa, 90 families, 302 genera, 479 species, 4 subspecies, 51 varieties, and 3 forms. Among the taxa, 19 were Korean endemic plants and 17 were rare and endangered plants. Plants as indicators of limestone areas were found in 33 taxa. Naturalized plants were found in 27 taxa and species threatened by climate change were found in 33 taxa, including 11 endemic plant taxa and 22 northern plant taxa. Plants endemic to Korea and northern plants were mainly found at the study site, whereas southern plants were not found. Thus, Mt. Deokhangsan apparently has an environment suitable for the growth of northern plants.
