  • As an alternative bipolar plate material for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), TiN-coated 316 stainless was evaluated in terms of electrical contact resistance and water contact angle. Performance and lifetime of the TiN-coated 316 bipolar plates were measured in comparison with those of graphite and bare 316 bipolar plates. At a cell voltage of 0.6 V, current density of the single cells using graphite, AISI 316, and TiN/316 bipolar plates was 996, 796, and $896mA/cm^2$, respectively. By coating 316 stainless steel with TiN layer, performance degradation rate determined to be the voltage degradation rate at a cell voltage of 0.6 V was reduced from 2.3 to 0.43 mV/h.

  • Molecular dynamics (MD) calculations were carried out in order to investigate the effect of MD cell size to predict the melting phenomena of A-type zeolite. We studied two model systems: a pseudocell of $(T_2O_4Na)_n$, (L= 12.264 $^{\AA}$, N= 84) and a true-cell of (SiAlO$_4Na)_n$. (L= 24.528 $^{\AA}$, N= 672), where T is Si or Al. The radial and bond angle distribution functions of T(Si, Al)-O-T(Si, Al) and diffusion coefficients of T and O were reported at various temperatures. For the true-cell model, the melting temperature is below 1500 K and probably around 1000 K, which is about 600-700 K lower than the pseudocell model. Although it took more time (about 30 times longer) to obtain the molecular trajectories of the true-cell model than those of the pseudocell model, the true-cell model gave more realistic structural transition for the A-type zeolite, which agrees with experiment.

  • Free-living Naegleria fowleri leads to a fatal infection known as primary amebic meningoencephalitis in humans. Previously, the target cell death could be induced by phagocytic activity of N. fowleri as a contact-dependent mechanism. However, in this study we investigated the target cell death under a non-contact system using a tissue-culture insert. The human microglial cells, U87MG cells, co-cultured with N. fowleri trophozoites for 30 min in a non-contact system showed morphological changes such as the cell membrane destruction and a reduction in the number. By fluorescence-activated cell sorter (FACS) analysis, U87MG cells co-cultured with N. fowleri trophozoites in a non-contact system showed a significant increase of apoptotic cells (16%) in comparison with that of the control or N. fowleri lysate. When U87MG cells were co-cultured with N. fowleri trophozoites in a non-contact system for 30 min, 2 hr, and 4 hr, the cytotoxicity of amebae against target cells was 40.5, 44.2, and 45.6%, respectively. By contrast, the cytotoxicity of non-pathogenic N. gruberi trophozoites was 10.2, 12.4, and 13.2%, respectively. These results suggest that the molecules released from N. fowleri in a contact-independent manner as well as phagocytosis in a contact-dependent manner may induce the host cell death.

  • Amorphous silicon Solar cell has n-i-p structure in general, and each layer's thickness and doping concentration are very important factors which are as influential on efficiency of salar cell. Using AFORS HET simulation to get the high efficiency, by adjusting n layer's thickness and doping concentration, p layer's doping concentration. The optimized values are a-Si:H(n)'s thickness of 1nm, a-Si:H(n)r's doping concentration of $2\times10^{20}cm^{-3}$, a-Si:H(p+)r's doping concentration of $1\times10^{19}cm^{-3}$. After optimization, the solar cell shows $V_{oc}$=679.5mV, $J_{sc}$=39.02mA/$cm^2$, FF=83.71%, and a high Efficiency=22.21%. Though this study, we can use this study for planning or manufacturing solar cell which has high efficiency.

  • The perovskite solar cell is a next-generation solar cell that replaces the existing silicon solar cell. It is a solar cell device using an organic-inorganic hybrid material having a perovskite structure as a photoactive layer. It has advantages for the process and has shown rapid efficiency improvement over the past decade. In the process of commercialization of such perovskite solar cells, research and development for a large-area coating method should be carried out. As one of the large-area perovskite solar cell large-area coating methods, the slot-die coating method was studied. By using a meniscus to pass over the substrate and coating the solution, the 3D printer was equipped with a meniscus so that it could be coated. Variables that act during coating include bed temperature, coating speed, N2 blowing interval, N2 blowing height, N2 blowing intensity, etc. By controlling these, the perovskite absorption layer was manufactured and the coating conditions for manufacturing large-area devices were optimized.

  • Retinoic acid plays an important role in the regulation of cell growth and differentiation. In our present study, we evaluated the effects of all-trans retinoic acid (RA) on cell proliferation and on the cell cycle regulation of human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs). Cell proliferation was assessed using the MTT assay. Cell cycle analysis was performed by flow cytometry, and cell cycle regulatory proteins were determined by western blot. Cell proliferation was increased in the presence of a 0.1 nM to 1 ${\mu}M$ RA dose range, and maximal growth stimulation was observed in cells exposed to 1 nM of RA. Exposure of HGFs to 1 nM of RA resulted in an augmented cell cycle progression. To elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying cell cycle regulation by RA, we measured the intracellular levels of major cell cycle regulatory proteins. The levels of cyclin E and cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) 2 were found to be increased in HGFs following 1 nM of RA treatment. However, the levels of cyclin D, CDK 4, and CDK 6 were unchanged under these conditions. Also after exposure to 1 nM of RA, the protein levels of $p21^{WAF1/CIP1}$ and $p16^{INK4A}$ were decreased in HGFs compared with the control group, but the levels of p53 and pRb were similar between treated and untreated cells. These results suggest that RA increases cell proliferation and cell cycle progression in HGFs via increased cellular levels of cyclin E and CDK 2, and decreased cellular levels of $p21^{WAF1/CIP1}$ and $p16^{INK4A}$.

  • H2-M3 (M3) is a unique antigen presenting molecule which provides N-formylated peptide to certain type of T cells. Previous observation indicated that NK cell activity is significantly diminished during listerial infection in $H2-M3^{-/-}$ mice. To explore the possibility that M3 expression directly effect on NK cell activity, we measured NK cell activity with or without stimulation of N-formylated peptide on antigen presenting cells. Results indicated that the expression of M3 is not directly influence on NK cell activity. Further study will be focused on the indirect effect of M3 on regulating NK cell activity.

  • PV (photovoltaic) has becoming an important industry to invest due to its high robustness and require very little maintenance which goes a long time. Solar cell fabrication involves a few critical processes such as doping to make the N-type and P-type silicon, contact metallization, surface texturization, and anti-reflection coatings. Anti-reflection coating is a kind of surface passivation which ensures the stability, and efficiency of the solar cell. Thus, I will focus on the changes happen to the solar cell due to the reflectance and anti-reflection coating by PC1D. By using the PC1D (solar cell simulation program), I would analysis the effect of reflectance on the N-type cell. At last I will conclude the result regarding what I learned throughout this experiment.

  • We have obtained a violet-sensitive photocell as a part of the developing project on such type of solar cell. The photocell has the structure of SnO2-SiO2-Si MOS coupled on Si n-p homojuction. It is not relevant to use as a solar cell because of its small photovoltaic power(0.25V, 150$mutextrm{A}$), however, since the spectral response of the cell is shifted toward the violet band region and its switching speed is fairly high in comparison with those of the Si p-n homojunction type solar cell, it is expected that we will be able to find mere novel utilities than the ordinary silicon photocell.

  • One of the most important characteristic curves of a solar cell is its current density-voltage (J-V) curve under AM1.5G insolation. Solar cell can be considered as a semiconductor diode, so a diode equivalent model was used to estimate its parameters from the J-V curve by numerical simulation. Active layer plays an important role in operation of a solar cell. We investigated the effect thicknesses and defect densities (Nd) of the active layer on the J-V curve. When the active layer thickness was varied (for Nd = 8×1017 cm-3) from 800 nm to 100 nm, the reverse saturation current density (Jo) changed from 3.56×10-5 A/cm2 to 9.62×10-11 A/cm2 and its ideality factor (n) changed from 5.28 to 2.02. For a reduced defect density (Nd = 4×1015 cm-3), the n remained within 1.45≤n≤1.92 for the same thickness range. A small increase in shunt resistance and almost no change in series resistance were observed in these cells. The low reverse saturation current density (Jo = 9.62×10-11 A/cm2) and diode ideality factor (n = 2.02 or 1.45) were observed for amorphous silicon based solar cell with 100 nm thick active layer.
