  • This experiment was conducted to find out the effects of nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) on the postharvest quality of 'Janghowon hwangdo' peach fruits. Fruits were harvested at commercial maturity for marketing in late September, and treated with 70% $N_2O$ + 20% $O_2$ + 10% air, 80% $N_2O$ + 20% $O_2$, and 90% $N_2O$ + 10% $O_2$ for 48 h, and then stored at $15^{\circ}C$. No significant treatments for soluble sugar and titratable acidity contents were detected. However, good appearance and taste in peach fruit were maintained better in 80% $N_2O$ treatment than in air treatment. The treatment with 90% $N_2O$ had negative effects on weight loss and taste because of rotting by anaerobic fermentation. 80% $N_2O$ treated fruit had significantly higher fungus (Botrytis cinerea) growth inhibition of saprogenic approximately than air treatment until 12 days of storage. The browning and rotting at surface of peach were also retarded when peaches were treated with 80% $N_2O$ before they were artificially wounded. The activity of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) was inhibited about 80% in peach of 80% $N_2O$ treatment compared with in air treatment. The result showed that 80% $N_2O$ treatment was able to extend the shelf life of peach fruits through maintaining taste and inhibition of softening and browning by rotting and wounding during storage.

  • When WC and group IV elements are added to Ti(C,N)-Ni substrate, microstructures of the cermet is changed. The microstructure gives direct effect on the property of the material. In this study, the amount of WC and group W elements of Ti(C,N) cermet tool was investigated. The composition of WC was changed from 5 to 20wt% to determine the effect of WC on the cutting performance of cermet tool. The more WC was added, the longer the tool life of the cermet tool was. The cermet with 20wt% WC showed the best fracture toughness. The effect of group W elements; ZrC, ZrN and HfC was also investigated by adding each of them to manufacture the cermet tool with fixed l4wt% WC composition. The cermet with 1wt% ZrC and 14wt% WC showed the best cutting performance among the investigated cermet tools.

  • The effect of WC or NbC addition on various properties of Ti(C0.7N0.3)-Ni cermets was investigated. The microstructure oj Ti(C0.7N0.3)-xWC-20Ni showed a typical core/rim structure, irrespective of the WC content, whereas the structure oj Ti(C0.7N0.3)-xNbC-20Ni was different and was dependent on the NbC content. The hardness (HV) and the fracture toughness (KIC) had a tendency to increase marginally, while the coercive force (HC) and the magnetic saturation $(4{\pi}{\sigma})$ decreased gradually with an increase in WC or NbC content in the systems studied. In addition, increasing WC content in Ti(C0.7N0.3)-xWC-20Ni system, decarburization was retarded, while denitrification was accelerated

  • Up-flow sludge blanket(USB) reactors were used to investigate the effects of N/C(${NO_3}^--N/COD$) ratio on simultaneous denitrification and methanogenesis processes. Without nitrate feeding, 84% of the influent COD was converted into methane. With the increase of N/C ratio, nitrogen gas increased while methane production decreased and stopped finally at the N/C ratio over 0.20. Influent nitrate was completely denitrified into nitrogen gas while nitrate removal efficiency dropped below 40% at N/C ratio of 0.40 because of deficiency in organic carbon. Fraction of COD utilized by denitrification increased at higher N/C ratios. Methanogenesis started to be effected at N/C ratio of 0.05, which could explain the competition for organic carbon between these microorganisms such as denitrifiers and methanogens, rather than inhibitory effect of nitrate and its intermediates. Critical N/C ratio for simultaneous denitrification and methanogenesis was found to be 0.20. Influent COD was removed over 92% by denitrification, methanogenesis and other biochemical reactions including cell growth at these N/C ratios.

  • One hundred and twenty imprinting control region (ICR) mouse with initial body weights of 26 ± 2 g (5 weeks old) were assigned to six treatments for a two-week feeding trial to determine the effect of Pediococcus pentosaceus strains (PpS) which were isolated from three different types of Kimchi in ICR mice infected with Escherichia coli (Ec) or Salmonella Typhimurium (ST). Six groups constituted a normal control group without Ec or ST orally administrated (NC-; n = 20), a normal control group (NC+; n = 20), a group for which Lactobacillus plantarum was orally administrated (LP; n = 20), a group for which PpS A was orally administrated (PSA; n = 20), a group for which PpS B was orally administrated (PSB; n = 20), and a group for which PpS C was orally administrated (PSC; n = 20), the latter five groups constituted the Ec infected groups and the ST infected groups of 10 mice each. LP and PSC showed significantly (p < 0.05) improved growth performance compared to the other groups, except for NC- in the Ec infected mice group. NC+ showed significantly lower (p < 0.05) growth performance compared to the other groups, except for NC- in the ST infected mice groups. Regarding the Ec and Salmonella counts in the intestine, the LP and PSC groups had significantly lower (p < 0.05) counts than the NC+ and PSB groups. In conclusion, LP and PSC strains isolated from Kimchi can act as probiotics by inhibiting Ec and ST.

  • The demand for lightweight and high-strength materials is increasing. However, studies on the bond of concrete and reinforcing bars for high-strength lightweight concrete with a compressive strength of 120 MPa and a unit weight of 20 kN/m3 to structural members are lacking. Therefore, in this paper, 108 specimens of high-strength lightweight concrete with a compressive strength of 120 MPa and a unit weight of about 20 kN/m3 were fabricated, a direct pull-out test was performed, and the bond characteristics were evaluated by comparing the test results with design code. Compared to the decrease in unit weight, the solid bubble shows relatively little reduction in compressive strength and modulus of elasticity. It was f ound to have larger slip and parameter values than concrete with low compressive strength and unit weight.

  • Nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) is one of six greenhouse gases listed up in the Kyoto Protocol, and it effects a strong global warming because of its much greater global warming potential (GWP), by 310 times over a 100-year time horizon, than $CO_2$. Although such $N_2O$ emissions from both natural and anthropogenic sources occur, the latter can be controlled using suitable abatement technologies, depending on them, to reduce $N_2O$ below acceptable or feasible levels. This paper has extensively reviewed the anthropogenic $N_2O$ emission sources and their related compositions, and the state-of-the-art non-catalytic and catalytic technologies of the emissions controls available currently to representative, large $N_2O$ emission sources, such as adipic acid production plants. Challengeable approaches to this source are discussed to promote establishment of advanced $N_2O$ emission control technologies.

  • Let $M_n$ be the algebra of all complex $n{\times}n$ matrices and ${\phi}:M_n{\rightarrow}M_n$ a surjective map (not necessarily additive or multiplicative) satisfying one of the following equations: $${\det}({\phi}(A){\phi}(B)+{\phi}(X))={\det}(AB+X),\;A,B,X{\in}M_n,\\{\sigma}({\phi}(A){\phi}(B)+{\phi}(X))={\sigma}(AB+X),\;A,B,X{\in}M_n$$. Then it is an automorphism, where ${\sigma}(A)$ is the spectrum of $A{\in}M_n$. We also show that if $\mathfrak{A}$ be a standard operator algebra, $\mathfrak{B}$ is a unital Banach algebra with trivial center and if ${\phi}:\mathfrak{A}{\rightarrow}\mathfrak{B}$ is a multiplicative surjection preserving spectrum, then ${\phi}$ is an algebra isomorphism.

  • Let $\mathcal{O}_n$ be the set of ordered labeled trees on $\{0,\;{\ldots},\;n\}$. A maximal decreasing subtree of an ordered labeled tree is defined by the maximal ordered subtree from the root with all edges being decreasing. In this paper, we study a new refinement $\mathcal{O}_{n,k}$ of $\mathcal{O}_n$, which is the set of ordered labeled trees whose maximal decreasing subtree has $k+1$ vertices.
