  • For estimation of chain-matching phenomena between normal paraffin as a solvent and straight-chain fatty acid as an additive, the density measurement of n-dodecane, n-tetradecane and n-hexadecane were carried out at oil temperature 313K and pressure up to 1.3 GPa. Their solidification pressure were easily determined by the appearance of molecular crystal, abrupt volumetric contraction and generation of heat of solidification and showed minima under the matching condition. The bulk modulus K of molecular crystal was evaluated using phase diagram. The bulk modulus showed maxima under the each matching condition. The chain matching effect on the bulk modulus beyond the scope of the interfacial phenomena are confirmed.

  • A biosurfactant produced by Tsukamurella sp. 26A was purified by procedures including acid precipitation, ethylacetate extraction, and adsorption chromatography. The purified biosurfactant reduced the surface tension of water from 72 mN/m to 30 mN/m at a concentration of 250 mg/l, whereas the minimum interfacial tension against n-hexadecane was lowered to 1.5 mN/m at a concentration of 40 mg/i. The compound stabilized oil-in-water emulsions with a variety of commercial oils and had strong emulsification and stabilization activities when compared to those of commercial emulsifiers and stabilizers. Surface tension was stable over a broad range of pH (2-12) and temperature ($100^{\circ}C$, 3h). The biosurfactant was identified as glycolipid having a hydrophilic moiety of trehalose.

  • This study reports the microfluidic preparation of monodisperse multiple emulsions using hydrodynamic control. To generate multiple emulsions, we fabricate a microfluidic capillary device based on co-flowing stream without any surface modification of microchannels. Based on the system, we can successfully generate multiple emulsions (W/O/W) using water containing 0.5 wt% Tween 20, n-hexadecane with 5 wt% Span 80, and 10 wt% poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) aqueous solution, respectively. Furthermore, we control the number of inner droplets by modulation of flow rate of inner fluid at fixed flow rate of middle and outer fluid. The multiple emulsions having precisely controlled inner droplets' size and number can be applicable for multiple chemical reactions as an isolated microreactor.

  • The thermal control device using solid-liquid phase change material (PCM) is designed, manufactured, and experimented in thermal environment chamber. The n-Hexadecane is selected as a PCM and its melting point is placed within the component working temperature range. The PCM container is made of Al6061 and has the thermal spreading fins inside. To simulate the working condition for on-orbit satellite the heat pipes are used to connect the heater and radiator and the PCM thermal control device (PCMTD) is installed at the middle portion of heat pipes. The thermal buffer mass (TBM), which is same configuration and volume with PCMTD, is also manufactured to compare the thermal control performance. As a result, the PCMTD is not only more efficient than TBM in their temperature control features but both mass and power of compensation heater are reduced.

  • The strain producing biosurfactant was isolated from soil smples. The isolated strain was identified as the genus Nocardia through its morphological, cultural and physiolgical characteristics. A high concentration of the biosurfactant by Nocardia sp. L-417 was obtained after 4 days of cultivation in the culture medium containing 3% n-hexadecane, 0.1% $NaNO_3$, 0.02% $K_2HOP_4$, 0.01% $H_2PO_4$, 0.01% $MgSO_4$.$7H_2O$, 0.01% $CaCl_2$, 0.02% yeast extract, and 0.02% tryptone. The optimum pH and temperature for biosurfactant production were pH 6.0 and $30^{\circ}C$, respectively. Furthermore, most biosurfactans were produced during the exponential growth phase, and this fact indicated that the biosurfactans production was growth-associated. The biosurfactant showed the good emulsification activities on various emulsifying substrates such as bunker A, paraffin, corn oil which are used widely in industries.

  • The Acinetobacter sp. BE-254 isolated from soil sources produced a bioemulsifier in the medium supplemented with n-hexadecane. This bioemulsifier was purified by the procedures of fractionation (ammonium sulfate and chilled acetone), extraction by hexane, and column chromatography on silica gel 60. The results from various color reactions indicated that the bioemulsifier was a glycolipid. The purified emulsifier was very stable at pHs ranging from 4 to 10 and under heat treatment at $100^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. Emulsification activity was also hardly influenced by pH. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) and surface tension at the point ($\gamma_{cmc}$) of the bioemulsifier were approximately 35 mg/l and 30 mN/m, respectively. The bioemulsifier showed a fairly good emulsification activity and stability in comparison with other commercial emulsifiers in the basic formula composed of emulsifier, oil, and water.

  • Evaporation and ignition characteristics of fuel droplet have major influences on the efficiency and performance of engine. In the present study the experiment of evaporation and self-ignition of single fuel was performed under the various ambient conditions. An individually suspended droplet of n-heptane n-hexadecane ethyl-alcohol and light oil were employed as a liquid droplet. Evaporation and ignition characteristics were measured by using the video-camera and image processing technique under the various ambient temperatures (up to 1000310 OC)and partial pressure of oxigen(up to 60%) The evaporation curve shows that the droplet life time ignition delay time decreases as the ambient temperature and partial pressure of oxigen increase, The temperature variations of droplet were also reported for various fuel and ambient temperatures. The numerical simulations were carried out to predict droplet diameter and temperature with favorable agreement.

  • A study has been conducted to clarify the effect of watery vapor concentration in hot ambient on droplet evaporation. Droplets of water, ethanol, n-hexadecaneand n-heptane were used in this experimental study. Ambient conditions are fixed at 470 K in temperature, 0.1 MPa in pressure and 2 m/s in velocity of ambient air. Watery vapor concentration was changed 0%~40% by 10% by add water to air. To obtain the time histories of droplet diameter after exposed in ambient, a suspended droplet in hot and humid ambient stream was synchronized with a back flash light, and enlarged droplet images were taken by a CCD camera. The evaporation rate constant of water droplet decreases slightly with the vapor concentration because diffusion velocity reduction of droplet vapor occurs on the surface. The values of ethanol and n-heptane droplet actively increase by effect that water from condensation of vapor flows into the droplet. The evaporation rate constant of n-hexadecane which has higher boiling point than water increases within around 30% of the concentration.

  • Batch tests were carried out to evaluate the thermal treatment of low volatile organic compounds in low-permeability soil. The chemical oxidation by sodium persulfate catalyzed by heat and Fe (II) was evaluated. Enhanced persulfate oxidation of n-decane (C-10), n-dodecane (C-12), n-tetradecane (C-14), n-hexadecane (C-16), and phenanthrene was observed with thermal catalyst, indicating increased sulfate radical production. Slight enhancement of the pollutants oxidation was observed when initial sodium persulfate concentration increased from 5 to 50 g/L. However, the removal efficiency greatly decreased as soil/water ratio increased. It indicates that mass transfer of the pollutants as well as the contact between the pollutants and sulfate radical were inhibited in the presence of solids. In addition, more pollutants can be adsorbed on soil particles and soil oxidant demand increased when soil/water ratio becomes higher. The oxidation of the pollutants was significantly improved when catalyzed by Fe(II). The sodium persulfate consumption increased at the same time because the residual Fe(II) acts as the sulfate radical scavenger.
