  • Musical sheet recognition is an emerging area as the role of computers in music increases. Although there are several well-known programs for composition, they have a limitation in that they cannot edit or play music generated from other programs. In this paper, we propose an algorithm that can read, recognize, and play music using printed sheets. The proposed algorithm first removes lines using horizontal histogram and extracts symbols. The symbols belong to one of the three categories; notes, rests, and other signs. Notes are recognized using the context information and rests and signs are recognized using a fuzzy ART algorithm. The proposed algorithm were applied to 50 pages of musical sheets and the experimental results showed that it is effective in automatic recognition of musical sheets.

  • The music videos of and were made based on the music of Pink Floyd and Beatles. This study aims to compare the characteristics of the two songs in terms of music and storytelling method. Previous studies investigated the narrative structure and concept of the storytelling, which are the basis of the images. This study, a comparative study of the two songs, firstly analyzed the narrative structure focusing on the roles and relationships among characters in each song. Secondly, it investigated the method of composition structure and the characteristics of the two pieces of music of which genre is different from each other. Thirdly, it classified the images into intro part, development part, and conclusion part and analyzed by comparison how the song or images inserted in the music interacts with each other. As a result, it was found that described strong progressive rock from the subjective viewpoint through the material storytelling structure by space and it represents the alienation of the hero through simile and metaphor, spatial changes crossing the past and the present, and the actual and non-actual crossover directing. On the other hand, developed a narrative storytelling structure in which progressive fantasy images developed from the psychedelic viewpoint through the confrontation of the good and the bad to deliver the messages of love and peace.

  • In order to prolong the Shin-Hallyu and make a significant leap forward, we analyzed the characteristics of Jambinai, Singsing Band, and Ackdan Gwangchil, bands that are recognized globally for their musicality and popularity. First, the socio-cultural background behind the world's attention on korean traditional music lies in the racial and cultural diversity that embraces the non-mainstream identity. In particular, the success of Korean traditional music fusion bands in non-Asian countries can satisfy their public seeking to enjoy an exotic culture that is different from Western culture. it is necessary to recognize cultural, social and musical differences depending on the country or ethnicity and to approach them accordingly. Second, in the same Asian region, Korean traditional music is not given a sense of homogeneity, but in the West, the Eastern heterogeneity seems to have become a stronger ompetitive edge. With the expansion of the new Korean Wave to various regions, it is necessary to try to form a regional repertoire. Third, we found the validity of the convergence with the new Korean Wave through the characteristics of Gugak musicians as the main body to build a world of traditional music and enable popularization and globalization. It is necessary to highlight korea's traditional cultural value through analytical research on the effects of tone, composition and directing techniques reflected in korean traditional music or musical elements. The uniqueness and Korean values provided by Gugak will serve as homogeneity in Asia and heterogeneity in Europe and the United States, presenting the possibility of New Hallyu content and contributing to the prolonged Korean Wave.

  • In this paper, we first looked at the structures and characteristics of the musical instrument to study the tone of haegeum, which is the only Korean musical instrument made using all the eight ingredients that make gugak instruments, and which is now the most frequently used in fusion gugak or pop music production sites. In addition, for the comparison of the various tones of the haegeum, under the same conditions, we analized how the haegeum's tone changes according to the types of Wonsan, which works as the bridge of the haegeum. Four Wonsan made of Park, Rosewood, Maple and Black Dan were used in the experiment, and low, medium, and high notes were recorded to compare the inner and outter open strings and the sound ranges. By doing so, we looked at the composition of frequency characteristics and the distribution and analyzed the timbres according to the types of Wonsan. Based on this study, it is expected to help the performers in the field choose the proper Wonsan according to each harmony part, rather than just to their tastes when performing Gugak orchestral music or haegeum ensemble. We also look forward to playing haegeum and using the timbres in various combinations of Wonsan that suit the genres at the pop music industry.

  • Due to the development of video sharing platforms, the amount of video uploads is exploding. Such videos often include various types of music, among which cover songs are included. In order to protect the copyright of music, an algorithm to find the original song of the cover song is essential. However, it is not easy to find the original song because the cover song is a modification of the composition, speed and overall structure of the original song. So far, there is no known effective algorithm for searching the original song of the cover song. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for searching the original song of the cover song using the inflection points of the melody line. Inflection points represent the characteristic points of change in the melody sequence. The proposed algorithm compares the original song and the cover song using the sequence of inflection points for the representative phrase of the original song. Since the characteristics of the representative phrase are used, even if the cover song is a song made by modifying the overall composition of the song, the algorithm's search performance is excellent. Also, since the proposed algorithm uses only the features of the inflection point sequence, the memory usage is very low. The efficiency of the algorithm was verified through performance evaluation.

  • This paper proposes a new method to improve the three problems of existing automatic composition method using artificial neural networks. The first problem is that the existing beat post-processing to fit into music theories could not handle all the cases of occurring. The second one is that the pitch space generated by artificial neural networks is distorted because the rest is trained with the pitch on the same neural network with large values. The last problem is caused by the difference between the initial melody and beats given by user and those generated by an artificial neural network in the process of new composition. In order to treat these problems, we propose an enhanced post-processing of beats, initial melody processing, and adoption of artificial neural network for rest. It was found from experiments that the proposed methods totally resolved the three problems.

  • This paper introduces a postprocessing method, an iteration method for melody, and an average neural network method for learning a large number of songs in order to improve musically insufficient parts in automatic composition using existing artificial neural network. The melody of songs composed by artificial neural networks is produced according to the melodies of trained songs, so it can not be a specific tonality and it is difficult to have a repetitive composition. In order to solve these problems, we propose a postprocessing method that converts the melody composed by artificial neural networks into a melody having a specific tonality according to music theory and an iteration method for melody by iteratively composing measure divisions of artificial neural networks. In addition, the existing training method of many songs has some disadvantages. To solve this problem, we adopt an average neural network that is made by averaging the weights of artificial neural networks trained each song. From some experiments, it was confirmed that the proposed method solves the existing problems.

  • The objective of this study is to derive key factors of commentaries in classical music concerts with commentaries and to measure the importance of each attribute, thereby presenting the characteristics of commentaries and commentators as well as suggestions to concert planners in terms of composition. In addition, by developing a scale that can measure classical commentary, a questionnaire is provided so that concert planners can plan programs that gathered the opinions of the audience. To this end, the first, second and third rounds of the Delphi survey and AHP were applied to concert planners, musicians (performing artists), and academic experts. A questionnaire was developed based on the results, and the survey was verified by conducting a pilot test with the general audience. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: First, the purpose of commentaries must be focused on arousing the audience's interest rather than on delivering information. Second, commentators must meet the auditory satisfaction of the audience with a good voice and clear pronunciation based on impeccable vocalization. Third, commentaries must be concise, with the commentaries appearing at least five times per concert, each of which must not exceed five minutes. Fourth, as a result of the pilot test, this study derived 14 items to rate commentary skills across four factors: four items for "arousing interest," three items for "delivering information," three items for "favorability," and four items for "expressiveness." Based on these results, the authors of study presented effective implications for concert planning.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel technique that generate a new song with given example songs. Our system use k-th order Markov chain of which each state represents notes in a measure. Because we have to consider very high-dimensional space if we use notes in a measure as a state of Markov chain directly, we exploit a hierarchical clustering technique for given example songs to use each cluster as a state. Each given examples can be represented as sequences of cluster ID, and we use them for training data of the Markov chain. The resulting Markov chain effectively gives new song similar to given examples.
