This study was carried out to investigate the distribution characteristics of persistent organic pollutants in incineration residues at industrial waste incinerators and municipal solid waste incinerators, which were analyzed by the official analytical method for the endocrine disrupting chemicals and the waste. Seven of 12 persistent organic pollutants were quantitatively analyzed by GC-MSD (SIM-mode). Hexachlorobenzene was detected in 21 samples among 44 incineration residues. The level of hexachlorobenzene was 0.132-8.138 ng/g in incineration residues, 0.195-5.765 ng/g in fly ash at industrial waste incinerators, 0.270-1.828 ng/g in bottom ash and 0.154-50.643 ng/g in fly ash at municipal solid waste incinerators, respectively.

An experimental investigation was carried out to evaluate the mechanical properties of concrete mixtures in which coarse aggregate was partially (30, 50 or 70 %) replaced with pre-washed municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash. Results indicated that bottom ash reduced the compressive strength, elastic modulus, and levels of heavy metals in leachate when used as a replacement for gravel, and that the maximum amount of MSWI bottom ash in concrete should not exceed 50 %. To analyze the effect mechanism of bottom ash in concrete, the degree of hydration and the following pozzolanic reaction characterized by the pozzolanic activity index, and the porosity distribution in cement mortar. The study indicates that improved properties of concrete are not solely later strength gain and reduced levels of heavy metals in leachate but also the progression of pozzolanic reactions, where a dense structure contains a higher proportion of fine pores that are related to durability.

Solid waste incinerator is expected to become widely used in Korea. The incineration of solid waste produces large quantities of bottom and fly ash, which has been disposed of primary by landfilling. However, as landfills become undesirable other disposal method are being sought. In this study, an experimental research is conducted to determine the geotechnical properties of municipal solid waste incinerator fly ash(MSWIF) in order to evaluate the feasibility of using the material for geotechnical applications. Basic pysicochemical characteristics, moisture-density relationship, strength, permeability, and leaching characteristics are examined. The results of MSWIF are compared to other MSWIF and coal fly ash which are used as construction material. In addition, the effectiveness of cement stabilization is investigated using various mix ratios. The result of stabilized mixes are compared to the unstabilized material. Cement stabilization is found to be very effective in reducing permeability, increasing strength, and immobilizing heavy metals. This results indicate that MSWIF with cement stabilization may be used effectively for geotechnical application.
In Taiwan there are 21 Municipal Solid Waste Incinerators (MSWI) built to treat 80% of the MSW nationwide. Approximately 2,000 tons of incineration ashes of municipal waste contain reaction ash and fly ash (3:1 by weight)will be produced daily, and this may cause a serious waste problem. According to EPA regulations, reaction ash and fly ash produced after incineration should be properly treated. Landfill capacity barely meets the general demands. More efficient actions should be planned and taken. The study found 'reclamation' should be the optimal solution to this problem. Only limited research and previous successful experiences are available among other countries. An incinerator in Northern Taiwan is chosen for this study to make environmental bricks from the reaction ash and fly ash. From the previous tests, the results of strength test were measured. From the previous test results, the fly ash products have not reached the desired strength; hence, reaction ash is chosen for further pilot study. In the experiment, incineration ashes, cement and gravel are mixed in the ratio of 1:1:1(by weight), to ground concretization aggregate and pelletization aggregate, the concrete products made from the aggregates were of the strength of 108 $kgf/cm^2$ and 142 $kgf/cm^2$ individually. For the purpose of making nonstructural walls which met the State Building Standards. In the study, 50 tons of concrete products was yielded from aggregate and environmental bricks. Further observation and supervision are recommended to ascertain the resource recycling and reclamation. EPA has planned to build three 'Recycling Plants' in northern, middle and southern Taiwan to develop efficient techniques to produce concrete products, sub-base course, soundproofing wall, gravel, artificial fishing reefs, tiles, drainage, bricks and etc. This experiment of the demonstrative plant solves the problem of the incineration ashes and opens another opportunity to reclaim them.

The Quality of municipal solid waste incineration ash (incineration ash) was analyzed for the purpose of the reusing for concrete material. The folwability and strength properties of concrete mixed with incinerator ash were investigated. CaO component was included more than 50% in chemical component of incinerator ash, mean size of 50% accumulated particle distribution of incinerator ash was about $25{\mu}m$. Particle shape of incinerator ash ($IA_1$) was massed the round shape with fine particle, particle shape of incinerator ash ($IA_2$) was piled up the sheet shape according to manufacture procedure. The Quality of concrete was effected by use of incinerator ash. When the incinerator Ash ($IA_2$) was used, slum of concrete was increased and dosage of high range water reducing agent was reduced. However, strength development of concrete was decreased. Dosage of high range water reducing agent was increased by combined use of incinerator ash ($IA_2$) and diatomite powder, but strength development of concrete was improved. Ratio of compressive strength and tensile strength was in the range 85%~105% of CEB-FIP model code.

This research was conducted to investigate physico-chemical characteristics of municipal solid waste (MSW) generated from T City, Gangwon-do and leaching characteristics of the incineration ash. From the results, bulk density of MSW in T city was $231kg/m^3$. Combustible and incombustible components were in 94.0% and 6.0%, respectively. Food waste and papers in combustible component occupied 32.3% and 41.2%. Water, volatile solids, and ash content were 41.3%, 50.5%, and 8.2%. C, H, O, N, S, and Cl showed 51.4%, 6.3%, 26.7%, 1.1%, 0.2%, 0.5%, respectively. Low heating value (2,704 kcal/kg) of T city was similar to 2,764 kcal/kg of Chuncheon and was 1,000 kcal/kg higher than 1,467~1,584 kcal/kg of the past Kuro-gu and Koyang city. The specification of leaching characteristics of the incineration ash were within the Korean regulation standard.
The main consistent materials and main elements of the bottom ash in municipal solid waste incineration ash according to particle size were investigated and the environmental hazards were considered by investigating the content of dioxin and heavy metals in bottom ash and the concentration of heavy metals in its leachate. The main materials of bottom ash are glasses, ceramics, scraps of iron. As the particle size increases, their percentage weight also increases and their percentage weight was over 70% in 4 mesh~25 mm particle size fraction. The main elements of bottom ash are CaO, $SiO_2$, $Fe_2$$O_3$,$ A1_2$$O_3$and the content of CaO decreases and the content of $SiO_2$increases as particle size increases. The heavy metals accumulate in small particle size fraction. The concentration of heavy metals in each leachate by domestic leaching test is almost similar. As the aging period is prolonged, pH of bottom ash lowers gradually and the leached concentration of Cu and Pb diminishes.

This pilot study focuses on emissions characterization of air pollutants produced from incineration of some municipal solid wastes (MSWs). The MSWs incinerated by an electric furnace maintained up to $600^{\circ}C$ included food, paper, and plastic wastes. The pollutants analyzed in this study included concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), bottom ash contents, and heavy metals extracted from the bottom ash of each waste. The VOCs identified were classified based on their chemical structure. The total emissions of VOCs produced from incineration of the papers were identified as the highest followed by those from the plastics and the food wastes. Aliphatic alkenes were major VOC compounds produced from incineration of plastic or food wastes, while furans were major VOCs produced from incineration of papers. The second major VOCs produced from incineration of food, plastics, and papers were aromatics. In particular, hazardous air pollutants such as benzene were produced with considerable amount of emission concentration. The bottom ash contents of papers were usually much higher than those of food or plastic wastes. The bottom ash contents produced from incineration of food and plastics were much lower than those of other MSWs. In analysis of heavy metals extracted by an ultrasonic method from the bottom ashes of the papers, high concentrations of heavy metals were identified from incineration of newspapers and box (cardboard). In addition, it was identified that the general public might be exposed to considerable amounts of lead concentrations during incineration processes and uses of paper cup and from ashes.

In general, solid waste arises from lots of human activities such as domestic, agricultural, industrial, commercial, waste water treatment, construction, and mining activities etc. If the waste is not properly disposal and treated, it will have a negative impact to the environment, and hygienic conditions in urban areas and pollute the air with greenhouse gases (GHG), ground water, as well as the soil and crops. In this paper, the Carbon Resources Recycling Appropriate Technology Center feasibility studies are reported at Bantayan Island, Philippines on the municipal solid waste management. The present objective of our study is to characterize the municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash and case study of MSWI production status in Bantayan, Philippines. Currently, wide variety of smart technologies available for MSWI management in developed countries. Recycling is the other major alternative process for MSWI landfill issues. In this paper, the feasibility studies of applied appropriate technologies for the municipal solid waste generation in Bantayan Island, Philippines are reported.

About 35 domestic incinerators are being operated currently. There is waste management policy to reuse waste efficiently and reduce waste through incineration which include reuse, recycling and energy recovery. However, there is a critical social issue that some heavy metals(Cu, Pb) were found in bottom ash from incineration of waste. After incineration, bottom ash is treated with chemicals to prevent second pollution of heavy metals from bottom ash and increase efficiency of heavy metal stabilization.
