  • In this paper, we analyze average capacity of an amplify-and-forward (AF) cooperative communication system model in multi-relay multiuser networks. In contrast to conventional cooperative networks, relays in the considered network have no embedded energy supply. They need to rely on the energy harvested from the signals broadcasted by the source for their cooperative information transmission. Based on this structure, a two-step selection scheme is proposed considering both channel state information (CSI) and battery status of relays. Assuming each relay has infinite or finite energy storage for accumulating the energy, we use the infinite or finite Markov chain to capture the evolution of relay batteries and certain simplified assumptions to reduce computational complexity of the Markov chain analysis. The approximate closed-form expressions for the average capacity of the proposed scheme are derived. All theoretical results are validated by numerical simulations. The impacts of the system parameters, such as relay or user number, energy harvesting threshold and battery size, on the capacity performance are extensively investigated. Results show that although the performance of our scheme is inferior to the optimal joint selection scheme, it is still a practical scheme because its complexity is much lower than that of the optimal scheme.

  • This paper discusses cyclostationary interference suppression for multiuser wired communication systems. Crosstalk interference from digital signals in multipair cables has been shown to be cyclostationary. Many crosstalk equalization or suppression techniques have been proposed which make implicit use of the cyclostationarity of the crosstalk interferer. In this paper, the convergence and steady-state behaviors of a fractionally spaced equalizer (FSE) in the presence of multiple cyclostationary crosstalk interference are thoroughly analyzed by using the equalizer's eigenstructure. The eigenvalues with multiple cyclostationary interference depend upon the folded signal and interferer power spectra, the cross power spectrum between the signal and the interferer, and tile cross power spectrum between the interferers, which results in significantly different initial convergence and steady-state behaviors as compared to the stationary noise case. The performance of the equalizer varies depending on the relative clock phase of the symbol clocks used by the signal and multiple interferers. Measued characteristics as well as analytical model of NEXT/FEXT channel are used to compute the optimum and worst relative clock phases among the signal and multiple interferers.

  • This paper investigates the performance of M-ary pulse position modulation (PPM) multiuser ultra-wideband (UWB) communication systems in terms of symbol error rate (SER) over fading and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Based on Gaussian approximation for the multiple access interference, an expression for the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is derived for the UWB system. This expression is used to derive exact SER expressions for coherent UWB receivers. The effect of pulse selection on the SER of multiuser UWB system is studied. In addition to rectangular pulse, the 2nd derivative Gaussian waveform and Rayleigh pulses were considered. We show that the system capacity and/or SER performance can be significantly increased by using the monocycle pulse in fading channels.

  • A beam design method based on signal-to-leakage-plus-noise ratio (SLNR) has been recently proposed as an effective scheme for multiuser multiple-input multiple-output downlink channels. It is shown that its solution, which maximizes the SLNR at a transmitter, can be simply obtained by the generalized eigenvectors corresponding to the dominant generalized eigenvalues of a pair of covariance matrices of a desired signal and interference leakage plus noise. Under time-varying channels, however, generalized eigendecomposition is required at each time step to design the optimal beam, and its level of complexity is too high to implement in practical systems. To overcome this problem, a predictive beam design method updating the beams according to channel variation is proposed. To this end, the perturbed generalized eigenvectors, which can be obtained by a perturbation theory without any iteration, are used. The performance of the method in terms of SLNR is analyzed and verified using numerical results.

  • In this paper, minimum mean-square-error (MMSE)-based transceiver processing of a bidirectional amplify-and-forward (AF) relay having multiple antennas is proposed. Besides, the optimal beamforming vectors of users are designed in the sense of the sum rate maximization. Simulation results show that the proposed relay processing can effectively reduce both co-channel interferences and self-interferences and that the proposed beamforming method is proper to the bidirectional communication employing the AF relay.

  • The use of conventional encryption algorithm or public-key encryption algorithm in existing computer networks can protect information on communication links which are subject to wiretapping. This paper presents the CP-cryptosystem of high system security by using both of these two algorithms in multiuser computer networks. It is proved by the protocols pro-posed in this paper that all of users in the CP-cryptosystem can not only communicate with others secretly but also affix their digital signature.

  • In this paper, we propose a new Genetic Algorithm(GA)-based Multiuser Detector(MUD), and its performance is evaluated by computer simulation compared to both the optimum MUD and the Hopfield neural network(NN) -based MUD when the near-far problem exists. From the results of comprehensive simulation, it is shown that the proposed MUD in this paper can guarantee a close BER performance compared to both the optimum MUD and the Hopfield NN MUD with a considerable reduced complexity under the near-far condition. Furthermore, a more performance improvement than the Hopfield W MUD can be expected when the near-far problem does not exist.

  • The sum-rate maximization rule can find an optimal user set that maximizes the sum capacity in multiple input multiple output (MIMO) broadcast channels (BCs), but the search space for finding the optimal user set becomes prohibitively large as the number of users increases. The proposed algorithm selects a user set of the largest effective channel norms based on statistical channel state information (CSI) for reducing the computational complexity, and uses Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP) for minimizing the interference between selected users in time-varying MIMO BCs.

  • A high-performance time-division multiplexing (TDM) -based multiuser (MU) multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) system for efficient indoor visible-light communication (VLC) is presented. In this work, a MIMO technique based on RGB light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with selection combining (SC) is utilized for data transmission. That is, the proposed scheme employs RGB LEDs for parallel transmission of user data and transmits MU data in predefined slots of a time frame with a simple and efficient design, to schedule the transmission times for multiple users. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme offers an approximately 6 dB gain in signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at a bit error rate (BER) of $3{\times}10^{-5}$, as compared to conventional MU single-input single-output (SISO) systems. Moreover, a data rate of 66.7 Mbps/user at a BER of $10^{-3}$ is achieved for 10 users in indoor VLC environments.
