  • This paper deals with the static optimal shapes of simple beams which are subjected to a vertical point load. The area and second moment of inertia of the regular polygon cross-section of the tapered beams are determined, which have always same volume and same length for the parabolic taper. The differential equation governing the elastic curve is derived using the small deflection theory and solved numerically. By using the numerical results of deflections, rotations and bending stresses of such beams, the optimal shapes, namely, optimal section ratios, of the beams subjected to a single point load according to variation of load position parameters are determined and presented in the figures. Examples of the static optimal shapes for beams with a single load and multiple loads are reported. The design process of this study can be used directly for the minimum weight design of simple beams.

  • Today's architecture can be best understood only through the recognition of pluralism, and, as is true of other building types, multiple design directions are prevalent for tall buildings. This contemporary design trend has produced many complex-shaped tall buildings, such as twisted, tilted and tapered form towers. Among many different structural systems developed for tall buildings, the outrigger system, with its inherent structural efficiency and flexibility in façade design, is widely used for contemporary tall buildings. This paper studies structural performance of outrigger systems employed for complex-shaped tall buildings. Twisted, tilted and tapered tall buildings are designed with outrigger structures, and their structural performance is investigated. For the twisted outrigger study, the buildings are twisted up to 3 degrees per floor. In the tilted outrigger study, the angles of tilting range from 0 to 13 degrees. The impact of eccentricity is investigated for gravity as well as lateral loads in tilted towers. In the study of tapered outrigger structures, the angles of tapering range from 0 to 3 degrees. Parametric structural models are generated using appropriate computer programs for these studies, and the models are exported to structural engineering software for design and analyses.

  • An increasing concern is paid to short-term voltage stability with the growth of penetration of induction motor loads. Reactive power reserve(RPR) of power system is critical to improve voltage stability. A definition of short-term voltage stability-related RPR(SVRPR) is proposed. Generators vary their contributions to voltage stability with their location and system condition, etc. Voltage support coefficient based on the second-order trace sensitivity method is proposed to evaluate SVRPR's contribution to short-term voltage stability. The evaluation method can account for the generator's reactive support in transient process and the contingency severity. Then an optimization model to improve short-term voltage stability is built. To deal with multiple contingencies, contingency weight taking into account both its probability and severity is proposed. The optimization problem is solved by primal dual interior point method. Testing on IEEE_39 bus system, it is indicated that the method proposed is effective. Short-term voltage stability is improved significantly by the way of SVRPR optimization. Hence, the approach can be used to prevent the happening of voltage collapse during system's contingency.

  • Wheel treads of E.M.U. are usually under a heavy thermal load by brake frictional heat between wheel and brake shoe and damaged by repeated thermal and mechanical loads. To examine the cause of wheel tread damage of E.M.U.'s in service running, a systematic approach has been used. This study is composed of three parts. Frictional heat analysis was conducted in the first part by finite element method. Two kinds of brake shoes in service were considered. In the second part, experimental study was carried out on a brake dynamometer. Temperatures were measured for the two brake shoes. And experimental study in service running E.M.U.'s was performed. Wheel and brake shoe temperatures were measured by using thermocouples and temperature indicating strips. Finally metallurgical characteristics were examined by a SEM/EDS and the cause of the wheel damage was analyzed. It seems that aggregated ferrous component is a main cause of the wheel tread damage.

  • The IEC standard for onshore or offshore wind turbines requires additional dummy simulations (at least 5 s) for the transient responses due to initial conditions. An increase in the dummy time causes a considerable increase in the computational cost considering multiple design spirals with several thousand design load analysis cases. A time of 30 s is typically used in practical simulations for a wind turbine design with a fixed platform. However, 30 s may be insufficient for floating offshore wind turbines (FOWT) because the platforms have lower natural frequencies, and the transient responses will last much longer. In this paper, an initial condition application algorithm is implemented for WindHydro, and the appropriate dummy simulation time is investigated based on a series of dynamic simulations of a FOWT. As a result, it is found that more than 300 s is required for the platform to have stationary motion after the initial transient responses for the FOWT under the conditions considered.

  • The main goal of this study is to develop MATLAB programming for an analysis of distortional deformations and stresses of the straight box girder. For this purpose, a distortional deformation theory is firstly summarized and then a BEF (Beam on Elastic Foundation) theory is presented using analogy of the corresponding variables. Finally, with governing equations of the beam-column element on elastic foundation, an exact element stiffness matrix of the beam element and nodal forces equivalent to concentrated and distributed loads are evaluated via a generalized linear eigenvalue problem. In order to verify the efficiency and accuracy of this method, distortional stresses of box girders with multiple diaphragms are presented and compared with results by FEA.

  • The solution of the power flow is one of the most important problems in electrical power systems. These traditional methods such as Gauss-Seidel method and Newton-Raphson (NR) method have had drawbacks up to now such as initial values, abnormal operating solutions and divergences in heavy loads. In order to overcome theses problems, the power flow solution incorporating genetic algorithm (GA) is introduced in this paper. General operator of genetic algorithm, arithmetic crossover, and non-uniform mutation operator of GA are suggested to solve the power flow problem. While abnormal solution cannot be obtained by a NR method, multiple power flow solution can be obtained by a GA method. With a heavy load, both normal solution and abnormal solution can be obtained by a proposed method. In this paper, a floating number representation instead of the binary number representation is introduced for accuracy. Simulation results have been compared with traditional methods.

  • This paper shows that active and reactive power load have significant positive relationship and there exist two types of relationship between them using Test Statistics. In investigating the cross plots at every hour, we found out that from 0 to 8 hours, there relationships are linear, while from 9 to 23 hours, they are two piece-wise linear. Also, reactive power loads was estimated and forecasted using active power load as the explanary variable with OLS (Ordinary Least Squares) regression methods. MAPE (Mean Absolute Percentage Error) for each model is calculated for one-hour ahead forecasting.

  • Stand-alone inverter supplies constant voltage to loads. However, when a three-phase stand-alone inverter supplies unbalanced load, the generated output voltages also become unbalanced. The nonlinear characteristics of inverter dead time cause a more serious distortion in the output voltage. With unbalanced load, voltage distortion caused by dead time differs from voltage distortion under balanced load. Phase voltages in the stationary reference frame include unbalanced odd harmonics and then, d-q axis voltages in the synchronous reference frame have even harmonics with different magnitude, which are mitigated by the proposed multiple resonant controller. This study analyzes the voltage distortion caused by unbalanced load and dead time, and proposes a novel dead time compensation method. The proposed control method is tested on a 10-kW stand-alone inverter system, and shows that total harmonic distortion (THD) is reduced to 1.5% from 4.3%.

  • The control design of inductive power transfer (IPT) systems has attracted a lot of attention in the field of wireless power transmission. Due to the high-order resonant networks and multiple loads in IPT systems, a simplified model of an IPT system is preferred for analysis and control design, and a controller with strong robustness is required. Hence, an active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) for IPT systems is proposed in this paper. To realize the employment of ADRC, firstly a small-signal model of an LC series-compensative IPT system is derived based on generalized state-space averaging (GSSA), then the ADRC is implemented in the designed IPT system. The ADRC not only provides superior robustness to unknown internal and external disturbances, but also requires few knowledge of the IPT system. Due to the convenient realization of ADRC, the designed IPT system retains its simple structure without any additional circuits. Finally, a frequency domain analysis and experimental results have validated the effectiveness of the employed ADRC, especially its robustness in the presence of frequency drifts and other common disturbances.
