  • Antenna selection is a method to enhance the performance of spatial multiplexing multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, which can achieve the diversity order of the full MIMO systems. Although various selection criteria have been studied in the literature, they should be adjusted to the detection operation implemented at the receiver. In this paper, antenna selection methods that optimize the post-processing signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and eigenvalue are considered for the lattice reduction (LR)-based receiver. To develop a complexity-efficient antenna selection algorithm, the incremental selection strategy is adopted. Moreover, for improvement of performance, an additional iterative selection method is presented in combination with an incremental strategy.

  • Multiple antenna techniques employed in fourth generation mobile communication systems are affected on their performance mostly by transmission environments and antenna configurations. The performance of the indoor LTE(Long-term Evolution) MIMO(multiple input multiple output) has been rigorously evaluated with considering various diversity transmission schemes and propagation conditions in the paper. Specifically, MAC TP(medium access control throughput) and LTE system parameters related to the MIMO technique are analyzed for several indoor propagation conditions. The performance comparison between multiple antenna diversity mode and single antenna mode has been derived as well. The results performed in the paper give the guideline on antenna configurations of polarization diversity in LTE 2×2 MIMO for various indoor channel environments, and possibly are exploited by network operators and antenna manufacturers.

  • Multiple antenna technologies have received high attention in the last few decades for their capabilities to improve the overall system performance. Multiple-input multiple-output systems include a variety of techniques capable of not only increase the reliability of the communication but also impressively boost the channel capacity. In addition, smart antenna systems can increase the link quality and lead to appreciable interference reduction.

  • In this paper, a novel wideband crossed planar monopole antenna with the multiple resonance characteristics is proposed. The proposed monopole antenna can be designed by a wideband crossed planar monopole antenna with L-shaped slits. In order to generate multiple resonance characteristics on the proposed monopole antenna, the length of L-shaped slit and the number of L-shaped slits are determined at an interesting frequency. The proposed antenna having an omnidirectional radiation pattern and a high gain over the multiple resonance frequency bands, respectively, is suitable for a mobile antenna.

  • We propose a structure for a multiple input multiple output antenna which has no space for isolation. The antenna operates in a frequency range of 2.4-2.48 GHz and can achieve a high channel capability as a Bluetooth antenna. The MIMO antenna consists of two planar inverted F antennas with symmetric structure. We designed the proposed antenna using HFSS simulator, and we designed the fabricated antenna using PCB fabricator. The MIMO antenna's isolation $S_{21}{\leq}-10dB$ and reflection coefficient $S_{11}{\leq}-20dB$. The proposed antenna's specification satisfies Bluetooth antenna's criteria and has more space than the existing MIMO antennas, which have space for isolation.

  • In this paper, a triple-band printed dipole antenna using parasitic elements is proposed for the multiple wireless services. The proposed antenna is designed and experimentally analyzed at the bands of PCS, IMT-2000, and ISM services. To achieve triple frequency operation, the proposed antenna contains two parasitic elements, which act as additional resonators by coupling from the driving dipole antenna. From the measured results, the resonant frequencies of this antenna are 1.79 ㎓, 2.03 ㎓, and 2.41 ㎓ and the measured impedance bandwidths are 90 MHz(1760∼1850 MHz), 210 MHz(1,930∼2,130 MHz), and 30 MHz(2,400∼2,430 MHz) for VSWR<2. The measured antenna gains are 2.14 ㏈i, 0.9 ㏈i, and 0.5 ㏈i, respectively. Antenna parameters for trifle-band operation are investigated and several antenna characteristics are discussed.

  • This contribution focuses on the maximum likelihood (ML) noncoherent synchronization of multi-antenna transceivers working in faded environments and employing ultra-wideband impulse radio (UWB-IR) transmit technology. In particular, the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) is derived for the general case of multiple input multiple output (MIMO) UWB-IR systems and used to compare the ultimate performance of three basic transmit schemes, thereinafter referred to as single input multiple output (SIMO), MIMO equal signaling (MIMO-ES), and MIMO orthogonal signaling (MIMO-OS) ones. Thus, the noncoherent ML synchronizer is developed for the better performing transmit scheme (i.e., the SIMO one) and its performance is evaluated under both signal acquisition and tracking operating conditions. The performance gain in the synchronization of UWB- IR signals arising by the utilization of the multi-antenna technology is also evaluated.

  • In this paper, we optimize antenna locations for a distributed antenna system (DAS) with distributed antenna (DA) ports equipped with multiple antennas under per-DA port power constraint. Maximum ratio transmission and scaled zero-forcing beamforming are employed for single-user and multi-user DAS, respectively. Instead of maximizing the cell average ergodic sum rate, we focus on a lower bound of the expected signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the single-cell scenario and the expected signal-to-leakage ratio (SLR) for the two-cell scenario to determine antenna locations. For the single-cell case, optimization of the SNR criterion generates a closed form solution in comparison to conventional iterative algorithms. Also, a gradient ascent algorithm is proposed to solve the SLR criterion for the two-cell scenario. Simulation results show that DAS with antenna locations obtained from the proposed algorithms achieve capacity gains over traditional centralized antenna systems.

  • In this paper, a multiple antenna system for next generation mobile applications is proposed. The proposed MIMO antenna consists of two parallel folded monopole antennas with the length of 100 mm and spacing of 6 mm and a decoupling network which locates at the top side of a mobile handset. In order to improve the isolation characteristic at the LTE band 13, a decoupling network was added between the two antenna elements placed close to each other. The decoupling network, consisting of two transmission lines, a shunt reactive component and common ground line, is simple and compact. To obtain the wide bandwidth characteristic, an wide folded patch structure generating the strong coupling between feeding and shorting lines through the slit is used at the bottom side of a mobile handset. Also, the performance of a multiple antenna system composed of three antenna elements is analyzed.

  • In this paper, a design method of broadband horn antenna having 3:1 bandwidth and multiple polarization characteristics is proposed. The feeding section of the antenna adopts quadruple-ridged waveguide type for broadband and multiple polarization characteristics of the antenna. By inserting a shorting bar in the cavity structure with a semi-sphere type back short, the return loss at the feeding section was minimized. A corrugated dielectric lens is designed for phase compensation and lens-surface matching at the antenna aperture, which improves the antenna beam pattern. The validity of the design method is verified by indicating the measured data of the antenna.
