Advances in low-cost wireless sensing have made instrumentation of large civil infrastructure systems with dense arrays of wireless sensors possible. A critical issue with regard to effective use of the information harvested from these sensors is synchronized sensing. Although a number of synchronization methods have been developed, most provide only clock synchronization. Synchronized sensing requires not only clock synchronization among wireless nodes, but also synchronization of the data. Existing synchronization protocols are generally limited to networks of modest size in which all sensor nodes are within a limited distance from a central base station. The scale of civil infrastructure is often too large to be covered by a single wireless sensor network. Multiple independent networks have been installed, and post-facto synchronization schemes have been developed and applied with some success. In this paper, we present a new approach to achieving synchronized sensing among multiple networks using the Pulse-Per-Second signals from low-cost GPS receivers. The method is implemented and verified on the Imote2 sensor platform using TinyOS to achieve $50{\mu}s$ synchronization accuracy of the measured data for multiple networks. These results demonstrate that the proposed approach is highly-scalable, realizing precise synchronized sensing that is necessary for effective structural health monitoring.

Inertial sensors are important components of navigation system whose performance and reliability can be improved by specific sensor arrangement configuration. For the reliability of the system, Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) is conducted by comparing each signal of arranged sensors and many arrangement configuration were suggested to optimize FDI performance of the system. In this paper, multiple conic configuration is suggested with optimal navigation condition and its FDI performance is analyzed by established Figure Of Merit (FOM) under the condition for navigation optimality. From FOM comparison, the multiple conic configuration is superior to former one in point of FDI.
In this paper, we have investigated the effects of geographic information on the performance of multiple ground target tracking system using multiple sensors. Geographic information is utilized in two cases: association and masking target measurement. Virtually no improvement is observed to the overall performance of tracking system when we applied mobility to the association procedure. Masking target measurement based on mobility produces desirable result that the number of false tracks is reduced. Since geographic information can be regarded as an additional sensor in sensor fusion paradigm, careful usage is required.
Ultrasonic sensors are widely used in mobile robot applications to recognize external environments, because they are cheap, easy to use, and robust under varying lighting conditions. However, the recognition of objects using a ultrasonic sensor is not so easy due to its characteristics such as narrow beam width and no reflected signal from a inclined object. As one of the alternatives to resolve these problems, use of multiple sensors has been studied. A sequential driving system needs a long measurement time and does not take advantage of multiple sensors. Simultaneous and pulse coding driving system of ultrasonic sensor array cannot measure short distance as the length of the code becomes long. This problem can be resolved by multi-frequency driving of ultrasonic sensors, which allows multi-sensors to be fired simultaneously and adjacent objects to be distinguished. Accordingly, this paper presents a simultaneous and multi-frequency driving system for an ultrasonic sensor array for object recognition. The proposed system is designed and implemented using a DSP and FPGA. A micro-controller board is made using a DSP, Polaroid 6500 ranging modules are modified for firing the multi-frequency signals, and a 5-channel frequency modulated signal generating board is made using a FPGA. To verify the proposed method, experiments were conducted in an environment with overlapping signals, and the flight distances for each sensor were obtained from filtering of the received overlapping signals and calculation of the time-of-flights.

Applications of smart sensors have been extended to safety systems in the aerospace, transportation and civil engineering fields. In particular, structural health monitoring techniques using smart sensors have gradually become necessary and have been developed to prevent dangers to human life and damage to assets. Generally, smart sensors are based on electro-magnets and have several weaknesses, including electro-magnetic interference and distortion. Therefore, fiber optic sensors are an outstanding alternative to overcome the weaknesses of electro-magnetic sensors. However, they require expensive devices and complex systems. This paper proposes a new, affordable and simple sensor system that uses a single fiber to monitor pressures at multiple-points. Moreover, a prototype of the sensor system was manufactured and tested for a feasibility study. Based on the results of this experimental test, a relationship was carefully observed between the bend loss conditions and light-intensity. As a result, it was shown that impacts at multiple-points could be monitored.

This paper develops an approach to the algorithm of Gait pattern Analysis and step measurement with Multi-Pressure Sensors. The process of gait consists of 8 steps including stance and swing phase. As 3 parts of foot is supporting most of human weight, multiple pressure sensors are attached on the parts of foot: forefoot, big toe, heel. As 3 parts of foot is supporting most of human weight, multiple pressure sensors are attached on the parts of foot: forefoot, big toe, heel. normal gait proceed from heel, forefoot and big toe over time. While normal gait proceeds, values of heel, forefoot and big toe can be changed over time. So Each values of pressure sensors over time could discriminate whether it is normal or abnormal gait. Measuring Device consists of non-inverting amplifiers and low pass filter. Through timetable of values, normal gait pattern can be analyzed, because of supported weight of foot. Also, the peak value of pressure can judge whether it is walking or running. While people are running, insole of shoes is floating in the air on moment. Using this algorithm, gait analysis and step count can be measured.

This paper has researched water supply facilities management using real-time water utility monitoring system based on USN(Ubiquitous Sensor Network) which is consisted of wireless sensors transferring waterworks facilities md treatment information about a valve-room and flowmeter-room of water supply installation. In the manholes, it was installed with flowmeter, pressure sensors, vibration sensors, Co-sensors, and hydro-thermograph sensors. These measurement values which are received by PDA are used for facilities operation on the spot safely and conveniently. It has also provided safe installation management via CDMA(Code Division Multiple Access) network which transfers data to remote servers to monitoring at a distance place. With safety management system of water supply facilities on USN technology convenience and safety is increased in real situation, and it is expected that we can supply clean water to people as much safer and more effective water supply installation management.

Large sensor networks require the collection and analysis of data from a large number of sensors. The number of sensors that can be controlled per micro controller is limited. In this paper, we propose how to aggregate sensor data from a large number of sensors using a large number of microcontrollers and multiple bridge nodes, and design and implement an efficient communication system for sensor data collection. Bridge nodes aggregate data from multiple microcontrollers using SPI communication, and transfer the aggregated data to PC servers using wireless TCP/IP communication. In this paper, the communication system was constructed using the Open H/W Aduo Mini and ESP8266 and performance of the system was analyzed. The performance analysis results showed that more than 30 sensing data can be collected per second from more than 700 sensors.
Although stable control algorithm has been implemented to the biped robot, the stability is not guaranteed because of encoder errors and/or rigid body elastics. Hence precise body pose estimation is required for more natural and long term walk. Specially pelvis sloping by gravity or uneven ground on landing place are most critical reason for undulated motion. In order to overcome these difficulties an estimation system for foot position and orientation using PSD sensors and Gyro sensors is proposed along with calibration algorithm and experimental verification.

We suggest CNT-based gas sensors for breath alcohol measurement. The sensors were composed of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) thin film on glass substrate with simple process, and the SWNTs thin film as sensing layer was formed by multiple spray-coating with SWNT composites which was well-dispersed, highly controlled and differently functionalized by various binders (TEOS, MTMS, and VTMS) added in ethanol solvent. In this work, three different SWNTs thin films were made to compare their electrical response properties for alcohol vapor. From fabricated sensors, conductance responses were measured and discussed. In the result, our alcohol gas sensors showed an effective selectivity even at room temperature.
