Background and Objectives A picosecond-domain laser treatment using a microlens array (MLA) or a diffractive optical element elicits therapeutic micro-injury zones in the skin. This study examined the patterns of tissue reactions after delivering multiple pulses of 1,064-nm, MLA-type, picosecond neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser treatment. Materials and Methods Multiple pulses of picosecond laser treatment were delivered to ex vivo human or brown micropig skin and analyzed histopathologically. A high-speed cinematographic study was performed to visualize the multiple pulses of picosecond laser energy-induced skin reactions in in vivo human skin. Results In the ex vivo human skin, a picosecond laser treatment at a fluence of 0.3 J/cm2 over 100 non-stacking passes generated multiple lesions of thermally-initiated laser-induced optical breakdown (TI-LIOB) in the epidermis and dermis. In the ex vivo micropig skin, stacking pulses of 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 at a fluence of 0.3 J/cm2 generated distinct round to oval zones of tissue coagulation in the mid to lower dermis. High-speed cinematography captured various patterns of twinkling, micro-spot reactions on the skin surface over 100 stacked pulses of a picosecond laser treatment. Conclusion Multiple pulses of 1,064-nm, MLA-type, picosecond laser treatment elicit marked TI-LIOB reactions in the epidermis and areas of round to oval thermal coagulation in the mid to deep dermis.

In this paper, we propose and analyze M-ary pulse order time hopping multiple access ultra wideband (PO-THMA UWB) system using modified Hermite polynomial (MHP). The MHP pulses have a mutually orthogonal property between different ordered pulses and that property makes simultaneous transmission at the same time slot regardless of collision in the THMA-UWB system. Therefore, we derive the cross-correlation furlction of MHP pulses and analyze the BER of the proposed system and show that the BER performance and the transmission capacity are improved dramatically when compared with those of conventional THMA-UWB system.
Retinal prostheses have shown some clinical success in restoring vision in patients with retinitis pigmentosa. However, the post-implantation visual acuity does not exceed that of legal blindness. The reason for the poor visual acuity might be that (1) degenerate retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) are less responsive to electrical stimulation than normal RGCs, and (2) electrically-evoked RGC spikes show a more widespread not focal response. The single-biphasic pulse electrical stimulation, commonly used in artificial vision, has limitations in addressing these issues. In this study, we propose the benefit of multiple consecutive-biphasic pulse stimulation. We used C57BL/6J mice and C3H/HeJ (rd1) mice for the normal retina and retinal degeneration model. An 8 × 8 multi-electrode array was used to record electrically-evoked RGC spikes. We compared RGC responses when increasing the amplitude of a single biphasic pulse versus increasing the number of consecutive biphasic pulses at the same stimulus charge. Increasing the amplitude of a single biphasic pulse induced more RGC spike firing while the spatial resolution of RGC populations decreased. For multiple consecutive-biphasic pulse stimulation, RGC firing increased as the number of pulses increased, and the spatial resolution of RGC populations was well preserved even up to 5 pulses. Multiple consecutive-biphasic pulse stimulation using two or three pulses in degenerate retinas induced as much RGC spike firing as in normal retinas. These findings suggest that the newly proposed multiple consecutive-biphasic pulse stimulation can improve the visual acuity in prosthesis-implanted patients.
We propose an ultrashort pulse optical code-division multiple-access (O-CDMA) scheme based on a pseudorandom binary M-sequence spectral phase encoding and decoding of coherent mode-locked laser pulses and perform a numerical simulation to analyze its feasibility. We demonstrate the ability to properly decode any of the multiple (eight) 10 Gbit/s users by the matched code selection of the spectral phase decoder. The peak power signal to noise ratio of properly and improperly decoded $8{\times}10 Gb/s$ signals could be greater than 15 for 127 M-sequence coding.
In this paper, we developed a new method to transmit multiple visible light channels in time division mode using the AC power line frequency in order to prevent the crosstalk between adjacent optical signals. Synchronizing pulses are generated from the 220 V power line, and one pulse period is subdivided into several time slots for visible light channels. Each channel transmits data in a predefined time slot without interfering adjacent channels. In experiments, synchronizing pulses with a repetition rate of 240 Hz were generated from the 60 Hz power line, and three VLC channels with a bit rate of 9.6 kbps transmitted data independently using the time slots between synchronizing pulses. This configuration is very useful in constructing time division VLC networks for multiple sensors.
We introduce a new method of time-division visible light communication (VLC) using LED lamp light for the generation of synchronizing pulses. The LED lamp, driven by an AC 220-V power line, radiates light that has a 120-Hz frequency component. The pulse generator in each VLC system receives the LED lamp light and generates the synchronizing pulses that are required for time-division transmission of multiple VLC channels. The pulse period is subdivided into several time slots for VLC channels. In experiments, 120-Hz synchronizing pulses were generated using LED lamp light, and three VLC channels were transmitted independently without interfering with each other in a condition where the VLC signals overlapped in space. This configuration is useful in constructing multiple wireless sensor networks that are safe and without interference in locations where LED lamps are used for illumination.
In this paper, we introduce a new method to reduce the inter-channel crosstalk in visible light communication (VLC) systems using the synchronizing pulses transmitted through the power lines. Synchronizing pulses are simultaneously transmitted to multiple VLC transmitters and receivers through the 220V power line. Each VLC transmitter modulates an LED and each VLC receiver demodulates the signal light in the time slot that is allocated with reference to the synchronizing pulses. This method is very simple and effective to prevent the inter-channel crosstalk in VLC systems for sensor networks because every VLC system can easily get the synchronizing pulses from the nearby power line.
In this paper, two frequency domain signal processing techniques for pulse shape modulation(PSM) ultra wideband(UWB) systems are presented. Firstly, orthogonal detection of UWB PSM Hermite pulses in frequency domain is addressed. It is important because time domain detection by correlation-based receivers is severely degraded by many sources of distortion. Pulse-shape, the information conveying signal characteristic, is deformed by AWGN and shape-destructive addition of multiple paths from the propagation channel. Additionally, because of the short nature of UWB pulses, timing mismatches and synchronism degrade the performance of PSM UWB communication systems. In this paper, frequency domain orthogonality of the Hermite pulses is exploited to propose an alternative detection method, which makes possible efficient detection of PSM in dense multipath channel environments. Secondly, a ranging method employing the Cepstrum algorithm is proposed. This method is partly processed in the frequency domain and can be implemented without additional hardware complexity in the terminal.

The general shapes of prebreakdown pulses in a discharge gap were calculated and the current pulses due to avalanche were detected in SF6 by changing the polarity of the protrusion placed on an electrode at pressures up to about 400 Kpa. The mathematical model of prebreakdown pulse development with a negative protrusion shows agreement with the observed pulses. No evidence of intense bursts of field-emitted electrons was observed. Breakdown probably results from a single avalanche developing to a critical size. However the calculated shape of prebreakdown current pulse does not agree with the observed pulses with a positive protrusion. The breakdown is preceded by multiple avalanche development at pressures less than about 200 Kpa. This observation has been interpreted as due to the formation of negative ions following photoionization in the gas which drift into the critical volume near a positive protrusion.
The laser-induced transient grating method is applied to study the dynamics of the nematic MBBA film. The nanosecond laser pulses of 355 nm are used to make the transient grating and the cw He-Ne laser of 633 nm is used to probe the dynamics. Strong multiple order diffractions are observed at high nematic temperatures. The reordering process induced by the phototransformed state, which is the locally melted state from the nematic sample, is attributed to the main origin of the multiple order diffractions from the nematic MBBA. The characteristics of the multiple order gratings are discussed with the grating profiles simulated from the multiple diffraction signals.
