A modular Gaussian beam model is developed to simulate some ultrasonic testing configurations where multiple interfaces are involved. A general formulation is given in a modular matrix form to represent the Gaussian beam propagation with multiple interfaces. The ultrasonic transducer fields are modeled by a multi-Gaussian beam model which is formed by superposing 10 single Gaussian beams. The proposed model, referred to as "MMGB" (modular multi-Gaussian beam) model, is then applied to a typical contact and angle beam testing configuration to predict the output signal reflected from the corner of a vertical crack. The resulting expressions given in a modular matrix form are implemented in a personal computer using the MATLAB program. Simulation results are presented and compared with available experimental results.

Multiple slab waveguides are analyzed by using the transfer matrix method and by introducing a virtual leaky layer. It is shown that the analysis is conceptually equivalent to the prism coupling phenomenon. The Lorentzian function is made use of toobtain the eigenvalues of multiple waveguides. Computer simulations are performed onsingle layered, double layered wavegurdes. The calculation results are confirmed to agree well with those of the finite difference method.
In order to simultaneously enhance the strength and plasticity in nanostructured / ultrafine-grained alloys, a strategy of introducing multiple length scales into microstructure (or called bimodal composite microstructure) has been developed recently. This paper presents a brief overview of the alloy developement and the mechanical behavior of ultrafine-grained Ti-Fe-based alloys with different length-scale phases, i.e., micrometer-sized primary phases (dendrites or eutectic) embedded in an ultrafine-grained eutectic matrix. These ultrafine-grained titanium bimodal composites could be directly obtained through a simple single-step solidification process. The as-prepared composites exhibit superior mechanical properties, including high strength of 2000-2700 MPa, large plasticity up to 15-20% and high specific strength. Plastic deformation of the ultrafine-grained titanium bimodal composites occurs through a combination of dislocation-based slip in the nano-/ultrafine scale matrix and constraint multiple shear banding around the micrometer-sized primary phase. The microstructural charactersitcs associated to the mechanical behaivor have been detailed discussed.

This investigation deals with reliability and sensitivity analysis of a repairable embedded system with standby wherein repairman takes multiple vacations. The hardware system consists of 'M' operating and 'S' standby components. The repairman can leave for multiple vacations of random length during its idle time. Whenever any operating unit fails, it is immediately replaced by a standby unit if available. Moreover, governing equations of an embedded system are constructed using appropriate birth-death rates. The vacation and repair time of repairman are exponentially distributed. The matrix method is used to find the steady-state probabilities of the number of failed components in the embedded system as well as other performance measures. Reliability indexes are presented. Further, numerical experiments are carried out for various system characteristics to examine the effects of different parameter. Using a special class of neuro-fuzzy systems i.e. Adaptive Network-based Fuzzy Interference Systems (ANFIS), we also approximate various performance measures. Finally, the conclusions and future research directions are provided.

We have developed a Cu-based bulk amorphous composite reinforced with a micron-sized crystalline phase, the (Cu60Zr30Ti10)95Ta5 amorphous matrix composite. The composite demonstrates the ultimate strength of 2332 MPa with a dramatically enhanced fracture strain of 15.3 %. Macroscopic observation of the fractured (Cu60Zr30Ti10)95Ta5 amorphous matrix composite showed the development of multiple shear bands along with numerous branching and deflection of shear bands. Microscopic observation on the amorphous matrix of the composite showed that cracks propagate through the residual amorphous matrix located between nanocrystallites, which had formed during deformation. Simulations based on finite element method were conducted to understand the formation mechanisms of multiple shear bands, the initiation site of shear bands, and interaction of shear bands with crystalline particles. Other microscopic fracture mechanism responsible for the enhanced plasticity was discussed.

It is possible to extract a 3D models from its multiple views using the self-calibration. Though it is possible to construct 3D models of objects from their multiple views, accuracy of 3D models depends on the fundamental matrix estimated between two views. In this paper, we show the fundamental matrix accuracy can be improved by taking a non-linear minimization technique. Furthermore, the corresponding points which are completely mismatches or have greater discrepancy errors in their locations, reduce the fundamental matrix accuracy. Thus, applying the Monte Carlo technique and the non-linear minimization Levenberg-Marquardt method to remove the outliers, we can estimate the fundamental matrix with the higher accuracy.

In this paper, we introduce a Hadamard matrix interstream transmission based blind channel estimation for multi-cells multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) networks. The proposed scheme is based on a network with mobile stations (MS) which are deployed with multi cells. We assume that the MS have the signals from both cells. The signal from near cell are considered as desired signal and the signals from the other cells are interference signal. Since the channel is blind, so that we transmit Hadamard matrix pattern pilot stream to estimate the channel; that gives easier and fast channel estimation for large scale MIMO channel. The computation of Hadamard based system takes only complex additions, and thus the complexity of which is much lower than the scheme with Fourier transform since complex multiplications are not needed. The numerical analysis will give perfection of proposed channel estimation.
A simple nonlinear programming(NLP) formulation for the optimal topology problem of structures is developed and examined. The NLP formulation is general, and can handle arbitrary objective functions and arbitrary stress, displacement constraints under multiple loading conditions. The formulation is based on simultaneous analysis and design approach to avoid stiffness matrix singularity resulting from zero sizing variables. By embedding the equilibrium equations as equality constraints in the nonlinear programming problem, we avoid constructing and factoring a system stiffness matrix, and hence avoid its singularity. The examples demonstrate that the formulation is effective for finding an optimal solution, and shown to be robust under a variety of constraints.
Zr-based amorphous alloy matrix composites reinforced with metallic continuous fibers were fabricated by liquid pressing process, and their fracture properties were investigated by directly observing microfracture process using an in situ loading stage installed inside a scanning electron microscope chamber. About 60 vol.% of metallic fibers were homogeneously distributed inside the amorphous matrix. Apparent fracture toughness of the stainless-steel- and tungsten-fiber-reinforced composites was lower than that of monolithic amorphous alloy, while that of the Ta-fiber-reinforced composite was higher. According to the microfracture observation, shear bands or cracks were initiated at the amorphous matrix, and the propagation of the initiated shear bands or cracks was effectively blocked by fibers, thereby resulting in stable crack growth which could be confirmed by the fracture resistance curve (R-curve) behavior. This increase in fracture resistance with increasing crack length improved fracture properties of the fiber-reinforced composites, and could be explained by mechanisms of formation of multiple shear bands or multiple cracks at the amorphous matrix and blocking of crack or shear band propagation and multiple necking at metallic fibers.
Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems offer significant enhancements in terms of their data rate and channel capacity compared to traditional systems. However, correlation degrades the system performance and imposes practical limits on the number of antennas that can be incorporated into portable wireless devices. The use of switched parasitic antennas (SPAs) is a possible solution, especially where it is difficult to obtain sufficient signal decorrelation by conventional means. The covariance matrix represents the correlation present in the propagation channel, and has significant impact on the MIMO channel capacity. The results of this work demonstrate a significant improvement in the MIMO channel capacity by using SPA with the knowledge of the covariance matrix for all pattern configurations. By employing the "water-pouring algorithm" to modify the covariance matrix, the channel capacity is significantly improved compared to traditional systems, which spread transmit power uniformly across all the antennas. A condition number is also proposed as a selection metric to select the optimal pattern configuration for MIMO-SPAs.
