  • The time-consuming and less objectivity are the main problems of conventional micromechanical parameters calibration method of Particle Flow Code simulations. Thus this study aims to address these two limitation of the conventional "trial-and-error" method. A new calibration method for the linear parallel bond model (CM-LPBM) is proposed. First, numerical simulations are conducted based on the results of the uniaxial compression tests on limestone. The macroscopic response of the numerical model agrees well with the results of the uniaxial compression tests. To reduce the number of the independent micromechanical parameters, numerical simulations are then carried out. Based on the results of the orthogonal experiments and the multi-factor variance analysis, main micromechanical parameters affecting the macro parameters of rocks are proposed. The macro-micro parameter functions are ultimately established using multiple linear regression, and the iteration correction formulas of the micromechanical parameters are obtained. To further verify the validity of the proposed method, a case study is carried out. The error between the macro mechanical response and the numerical results is less than 5%. Hence the calibration method, i.e., the CM-LPBM, is reliable for obtaining the micromechanical parameters quickly and accurately, providing reference for the calibration of micromechanical parameters.

  • This paper proposes a calibration method for a freehand 3-D ultrasound system in medical robotic research. The calibration block with six wires was designed to set the fixed target points. The positions of the ultrasound probe and calibration block were measured using an optical tracker. The relationship between the position of the ultrasound probe and the pixel coordinates in the images was derived using a calibration process. The scaling matrix was also calculated. The experimental results showed that the proposed method could find solutions using a simple least square method from one or multiple ultrasound images.

  • In case of visual sensing systems with multiple mirrors, systematic errors need to be reduced by the system calibration and the mirror position adjustment in order to enhance system measurement accuracy. In this paper, a self calibration method is presented for a visual sensing system designed to measure the three-dimensional information in deformable peg-in-hole tasks. It is composed of a CCD camera and a series of mirrors including two pyramidal mirrors. By using an image of the inner pyramidal mirror taken by the system, the error parameters of the inner pyramidal mirror could be calibrated or adjusted. Also the influence of the plane mirrors is investigated.

  • Most sensor array signal processing methods for multiple source localization require knowledge of the correct shape of array(the correct positions of sensors that consist array), because sensor position uncertainty can severely degrade the performance of array signal processing. In particular, it is assumed that the correct positions of the sensors are known, but the known positions may not represent the true sensor positions. Various algorithms have been proposed for 2-D sensor array shape calibration in far field environment. However, they are not available in near field. In this paper, 3-D sensor array shape calibration algorithm is proposed, which is available in near field.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the economic efficiency of the investment for calibrating measurement instruments in manufacturing industries, and to propose the administration scheme of measurement instruments. To investigate the efficieny of calibration, we estimate a multiple regression model composed of variables - product inferiority-rate, calibration rate, etc-, and verify fitness of the model. According to the statistical analysis by LOGIT method, a forecasting model of product inferiority-rate with calibration-related variables is proposed, and its validity is investigated.

  • This paper identifies the cause of the high frequency calibration limit of the acoustic chamber type calibrator for microphone calibration and presents a method to improve it. By using a commercial finite element analysis software, we analyzed the calibration frequency limit of the acoustic chamber type calibrator through eigen-frequency and frequency domain analysis. Based on this, we designed and fabricated an acoustic chamber type calibrator that can precisely calibrate within 1 dB from about 2 Hz to 6.4 kHz and verified its performance through experiments. The acoustic chamber type calibrator fabricated through this study has the advantage of being able to calibrate multiple microphones simultaneously in a wide frequency range, so it can be usefully used for simple calibration for multiple microphones.

  • Continuous research efforts have been made on acquiring location data on construction sites. As a result, GPS and RFID are increasingly employed on the site to track the location of equipment and materials. However, these systems are based on radio frequency technologies which require attaching tags on every target entity. Implementing the systems incurs time and costs for attaching/detaching/managing the tags or sensors. For this reason, efforts are currently being made to track construction entities using only cameras. Vision-based 3D tracking has been presented in a previous research work in which the location of construction manpower, vehicle, and materials were successfully tracked. However, the proposed system is still in its infancy and yet to be implemented on practical applications for two reasons. First, it does not involve entity matching across two views, and thus cannot be used for tracking multiple entities, simultaneously. Second, the use of a checker board in the camera calibration process entails a focus-related problem when the baseline is long and the target entities are located far from the cameras. This paper proposes a vision-based method to track multiple workers simultaneously. An entity matching procedure is added to acquire the matching pairs of the same entities across two views which is necessary for tracking multiple entities. Also, the proposed method simplified the calibration process by avoiding the use of a checkerboard, making it more adequate to the realistic deployment on construction sites.

  • Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been used as a tool, not only for imaging surfaces, but also for measuring surface forces and mechanical properties at the nano-scale. Force calibration is crucial for quantitatively measuring the forces that act between the AFM probe of a force sensing cantilever and a sample. In this work, the lateral force calibrations of a V-shaped cantilever were performed using the finite element method, multiple pivot loading, and thermal noise methods. As a result, it was shown that the multiple pivot loading method was appropriate for the lateral force calibration of a V-shaped cantilever. Further, through crosschecking of the abovementioned methods, it was concluded that the thermal noise method could be used for determining the lateral spring constants as long as the lateral deflection sensitivity was accurately determined. To obtain the lateral deflection sensitivity from the sticking portion of the friction loop, the contact stiffness should be taken into account.

  • It is well-known that non-metric digital cameras have to be calibrated for the close-range photogrammetry. But, the self-calibration is still not an easy task because it requires rather a large calibration site of accurate control points, multiple image acquisitions in different positions, and accurate image point measurements that are quite labor-intensive and time-consuming. Based on the premise, this study carried out check point accuracy analysis from self-calibration of different control point designs and photo combinations. The test results showed that the calibration using three photos covering three-dimensional control points produced high accuracy, but control points on a plane could attain the comparable accuracy with four photos including a 90-degree rotated photo. We then compared the target accuracy of on-site self-calibration using flat control points to that of laboratory-self calibration and observed comparable results.

  • Using Fuji apple fruits cultivated in Kyungpook prefecture, the calibration model for firmness evaluation of fruits by near infrared(NIR) reflectance spectroscopy was developed, and the various influence factors such as instrument variety, measuring method, sample group, apple peel and selection of firmness point were investigated. Spectra of sample were recorded in wavelength range of 1100∼2500nm using NIR spectrometer (InfraAlyzer 500), and data were analyzed by stepwise multiple linear regression of IDAS program. The accuracy of calibration model was the highest when using sample group with wide range, and the firmness mean values obtained in graph by texture analyser(TA) were used as standard data. Chemometrics models were developed using a calibration set of 324 samples and an independent validation set of 216 samples to evaluate the predictive ability of the models. The correlation coefficients and standard error of prediction were 0.84 and 0.094kg, respectively. Using developed calibration model, it was possible to monitor the firmness change of fruits during storage frequently. Time, which was reached to firmness high value in graph by TA, is possible to use as new parameter for freshness of fruit surface during storage.
