  • To reconstruct the complete 3-D shape of an object, seveal range images form different viewpoints should be merged into a single model. The process of extraction of the transformation parameters between multiple range views is calle dregistration. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm to find the transformation parameters between multiple range views. Th eproposed algorithm consists of two step: initial estimation and iteratively update the transformation. To guess the initial transformation, we modify the principal axes by considering the projection effect, due to the difference fo viewpoints. Then, the following process is iterated: in order to extract the exact transformation parameters between the range views: For every point of the common region, find the nearest point among the neighborhood of the current corresponding point whose correspondency is defined by the reverse calibration of the range finder. Then, update the transformation to satisfy the new correspondencies. In order to evaluate the performance the proposed registration algorithm, some experiments are performed on real range data, acquired by space encoding range finder. The experimental results show that the proposed initial estimation accelerate the following iterative registration step.

  • Followed by that HTML5(Hypertext Markup Language5) was introduced, many kinds of program and services based on this have been developed and released. HTML5 is technical standard specifications for cross platform for personal computers and mobile devices so that it is expected that continuing progress and wide application in the both sides of the academic and the industrial fields increase. This study is to design and implement a mobile application program for overlay rendering with DEM and other geo-based image sets using HTML5 WebGL for 3D graphic processing on web environment. Particularly, the blending technique was used for overlay processing with multiple images. Among available WebGL frameworks, CubicVR.js was adopted, and various blending techniques were provided in the user interface for general users. For the actual application in the study area around the Sejong city, serveral types of geo-based data sets were used and processed: KOMPSAT-2 images, ALOS PALSAR SAR images, and grid data by environment measurements. While, DEM for 3D viewing with these geo-based images was produced using contour information of the digital map sets. This work demonstrates possibilities that new types of contents and service system using geo-based images can be extracted and applied.

  • How to recover from the multiple 2D images into 3D object has been widely studied in the field of computer vision. In order to improve the accuracy of the recovered 3D shape, it is more important that noise must be minimized and the number of image frames must be guaranteed. However, potential noise is implied when tracking feature points. And the number of image frames which is consisted of an observation matrix usually decrease because of tracking failure, occlusions, or low image resolution, and so on. Therefore, it is obviously essential that the number of image frames must be secured by recovering the missing feature points under noise. Thus, we propose the analytic approach which can control directly the error distance and orientation of missing feature point by the geometrical properties under noise distribution. The superiority of proposed method is demonstrated through experimental results for synthetic and real object.

  • The study is to automatically or semi-automatically detect the accurate contour of tumors or lesions using active contour models (Snakes) in the MRI images of the brain. In the study we have improved the energy-minimization problem of snakes using dynamic programming and have utilized the values of the canny edge detector by the image force to make the snake less sensitive in noises. For the extracted boundary, the inside area, the perimeter and its center coordinates could be calculated. In addition, the multiple 2D slices with the contour of the lesion wore combined to visualized the shape of the lesion in 3D. We expect that the proposed method in this paper will be useful to make a treatment plan as well as to evaluate the treatments.

  • In this paper, we explore the application of 2-D dual-tree discrete wavelet transform (DDWT), which is a directional and redundant transform, for image coding. DDWT introduces limited redundancy and allows the transform to provide approximate shift invariance and directionally selective filters while preserving the usual properties of perfect reconstruction and computational efficiency with good well-balanced frequency responses. Also, quincunx lattice yields a non separable 2D-wavelet transform, which is also symmetric in both horizontal and vertical direction. And non-separable wavelet transformation can generate sub-images of multiple degrees rotated versions. The proposed 2-D non-separable DDWT can provide efficient approximation for directional features of images schemes, such as edges and contours in images that are not aligned with the horizontal or vertical direction. Finally, non-separable image processing using DDWT services good performance.

  • We present a region-based approach for accurate pose estimation of small mechanical components. Our algorithm consists of two key phases: Multi-view object co-segmentation and pose estimation. In the first phase, we explain an automatic method to extract binary masks of a target object captured from multiple viewpoints. For initialization, we assume the target object is bounded by the convex volume of interest defined by a few user inputs. The co-segmented target object shares the same geometric representation in space, and has distinctive color models from those of the backgrounds. In the second phase, we retrieve a 3D model instance with correct upright orientation, and estimate a relative pose of the object observed from images. Our energy function, combining region and boundary terms for the proposed measures, maximizes the overlapping regions and boundaries between the multi-view co-segmentations and projected masks of the reference model. Based on high-quality co-segmentations consistent across all different viewpoints, our final results are accurate model indices and pose parameters of the extracted object. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method using various examples.

  • Six images of IRC+10216 taken by the Hubble Space Telescope at three epochs in 2001, 2011, and 2016 are compared in the rest frame of the central carbon star. An accurate astrometry has been achieved with the help of Gaia Data Release 2. The positions of the carbon star in the individual epochs are determined using its known proper motion, defining the rest frame of the star. In 2016, a local brightness peak with compact and red nature is detected at the stellar position. A comparison of the color maps between 2016 and 2011 epochs reveals that the reddest spot moved along with the star, suggesting a possibility of its being the dusty material surrounding the carbon star. Relatively red, ambient region is distributed in an Ω shape and well corresponds to the dusty disk previously suggested based on near-infrared polarization observations. In a larger scale, differential proper motion of multiple ring-like pattern in the rest frame of the star is used to derive the average expansion velocity of transverse wind components, resulting in ~12.5 km s-1 (d/123 pc), where d is the distance to IRC+10216. Three dimensional geometry is implied from its comparison with the line-of-sight wind velocity determined from half-widths of submillimeter emission line profiles of abundant molecules. Uneven temporal variations in brightness for different searchlight beams and anisotropic distribution of extended halo are revisited in the context of the stellar light illumination through a porous envelope with postulated longer-term variations for a period of 10 years.

  • Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI), in collaboration with the NASA Goddard Sparce Flight Center (GSFC), will develop a next generation coronagraph for the International Space Station (ISS). COronal Diagnostic EXperiment (CODEX) uses multiple filters to obtain simultaneous measurements of electron density, temperature, and velocity within a single instrument. CODEX's regular, systematic, comprehensive dataset will test theories of solar wind acceleration and source, as well as serve to validate and enable improvement of space-weather/operational models in the crucial source region of the solar wind. CODEX subsystems include the coronagraph, pointing system, command and data handling (C&DH) electronics, and power distribution unit. CODEX is integrated onto a standard interface which provides power and communication. All full resolution images are telemeters to the ground, where data from multiple images and sequences are co-added, spatially binned, and ratioed as needed for analysis.

  • The number of traffic accidents caused by wet or icy road surface conditions is on the rise every year. Car crashes in such bad road conditions can increase fatalities and serious injuries. Historical data (from the year 2016 to the year 2020) on weather-related traffic accidents show that the fatality rates are fairly high in Korea. This requires accurate prediction and identification of hazardous road conditions. In this study, a forecasting model is developed to predict the chances of traffic accidents that can occur on roads affected by weather and road surface conditions. Multiple deep learning algorithms taking into account AlexNet and 2D-CNN are employed. Data on orthophoto images, automatic weather systems, automated synoptic observing systems, and road surfaces are used for training and testing purposes. The orthophotos images are pre-processed before using them as input data for the modeling process. The procedure involves image segmentation techniques as well as the Z-Curve index. Results indicate that there is an acceptable performance of prediction such as 65% for dry, 46% for moist, and 33% for wet road conditions. The overall accuracy of the model is 53%. The findings of the study may contribute to developing comprehensive measures for enhancing road safety.
