Effects of Parental Support, Bicultural Acceptance, and Self-Esteem on Career Attitude Maturity of Multicultural Adolescents

  • At a time when children of multicultural families have begun to enter adolescence in Korea, this study examined the effects of parental support and bicultural acceptance on the career attitude maturity of multicultural adolescents. This study tried to derive the implications related to the career path of multicultural adolescents by verifying the effects of self-esteem on the relationship between parental support, bicultural acceptance, and career attitude maturity. Using the 8th Multicultural Adolescent Panel Survey data (MAPS), the relative influence of antecedent variables on career attitude maturity was confirmed by hierarchical regression analysis of the data from 1,197 respondents. Model 1 included gender and parental support, Model 2 added bicultural acceptance to Model 1, and Model 3 added self-esteem to Model 2. As a result of the study, in Model 1, women had higher career attitude maturity than men, and the more supportive their parents were, the more positive the level of career attitude maturity. The adjusted R2 of Model 1 was .058, which did not have much influence. In Model 2, gender, parental support, and bicultural acceptance had statistically significant effects on career attitude maturity, and the amount of change in F was also significant. The adjusted R2 of Model 2 was .132. In Model 3, parental support was not statistically significant, and gender, bicultural acceptance, and self-esteem had statistically significant effects on career attitude maturity. The amount of change in F was statistically significant and the adjusted R2 was .185. That is, it was confirmed that the more the women, the more the bicultural acceptance, and the higher the self-esteem, the more prepared and determined the career path. Based on the research results, the implications related to career preparation of multicultural adolescents were presented.

생애발달주기에 따른 다문화 청소년 진로문제 인식의 차이 연구 (Difference in Perception toward Career Problems of Multicultural Adolescents based on Life-cycle Stages)

  • 이 연구의 목적은 다문화 가정 여부와 생애주기 네 개 단계(청소년, 결혼 전 성인기, 가족형성기, 자녀양육기)에 따라 다문화 청소년의 진로문제 인식에 있어 차이가 있는지를 살펴보고, 다문화 가정 여부와 생애주기간에 다문화 청소년 진로문제 인식에의 상호작용 효과가 있는지 알아본다. 이를 위해 전국 규모의 설문 조사를 실시하여 총 1,338명의 응답 자료가 최종 분석에 사용되었다. 연구목적을 위해 이원 다변량 분산분석(two-way MANOVA)을 실행하였다. 주요 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 다문화 가정 구성원들이 비다문화 가정 구성원들에 비해 다문화인 외모에 대한 부정적인 인식이 더 높은 것으로 나타났으며, 청소년 집단이 상대적으로 다문화 청소년들의 대인 관계 및 사회생활 적응에 대한 부정적인 인식이 낮은 편이었다. 둘째, 다문화 가정 구성원들은 비다문화 구성원들보다 다문화 학생들의 진로교육 기회 확대와 취업을 위한 적극적인 지원의 필요성을 인지하고 있었으며, 청소년이 다른 집단에 비해 취업 지원에 대한 필요성을 강하게 인식하고 있었다. 마지막으로 다문화 가정 여부와 생애주기 간에 다문화 청소년 진로문제 인식에의 상호작용 효과가 있는지 살펴본 결과, 가정환경, 진로활동, 교육 및 제도의 모든 항목에서 상호작용 효과가 존재하였다. 다문화 가정 내 또는 비다문화 가정 내 구성원들 간에 다문화 청소년 진로문제에 대한 인식이 다를 수 있음을 보여주었다.

우리나라 청소년의 가정배경에 따른 스케일링 경험 관련 요인 : 제18차 청소년건강행태온라인조사를 바탕으로 (Factors related to scaling experience among Korean youth according to their family background : the 18th Youth Health Behavior Survey (KYRBS))

  • Objectives: To investigate factors related to scaling between Korean and multicultural families using data from the 18th Youth Health Behavior Survey (KYRBS), 38,320 Korean adolescents were selected as subjects. Methods: A complex sample cross-analysis was conducted on general characteristics and oral health characteristics using the IBM SPSS program. Factors related to adolescent scaling were analyzed using complex sample logistic regression analysis. Results: Compared to Korean families, adolescents from multicultural families had 0.50 times less scaling experience within 12 months. Learning achievement was 1.30 times higher in high compared to low, indicating that scaling experience was high. In terms of economic status, scaling experience was found to be high at 1.50 times in high compared to low. Non-smoking adolescents had 1.26 times higher scaling experience. It was found that adolescents who do not use dental floss and interdental brushes have 0.71 and 0.55 times less scaling experience, respectively. Conclusions: Based on the above results, there is a need to increase adolescents awareness of oral health and motivate them to manage their own oral care. There is a need to provide opportunities to participate in various oral health education programs and to deepen continuous oral health education on oral disease prevention.

한국 다문화가족 청소년의 건강인식과 관련한 식행동 분석: 2017 ~ 2019 청소년건강행태조사 자료를 바탕으로 (Dietary Behaviors Associated with Health Perception of Korean Adolescents from Multicultural Families: based on data from the 2017 ~ 2019 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Surveys)

  • Objectives: This study examined the association between dietary behaviors and perceived health status among Korean adolescents from multicultural families. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 2,459 Korean adolescents from multicultural families (aged 13 ~ 18 years) who participated in the 2017 ~ 2019 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Surveys. Information on the sociodemographic variables, dietary behaviors, and lifestyle variables was self-reported using a web-based questionnaire. The dietary behaviors analyzed in this study were the breakfast and food intake frequencies, including fruit, vegetable, milk, fast food, carbonated drink, sweet drink, and high caffeine/energy drinks. The adolescents' health perception was self-rated as healthy, average, or unhealthy. The dietary behaviors associated with health perception were examined using a multiple logistic regression after adjusting for the confounding variables. Results: In this study population, 7.6% of adolescents perceived their health status as unhealthy, and 25.4% perceived it as average. The adolescents who were girls, middle school students, and in households with a low economic status showed significantly higher percentages of poor health perception (P-values < 0.001). Skipping breakfast was significantly associated with a negative health perception. Compared to the adolescents who consumed fruits every day, those who did not consume fruits during the previous week showed a higher odd ratio (OR) for a negative health perception [OR = 2.29, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.32-3.97]. The adolescents who frequently consumed carbonated drinks (≥ 5 times/week) perceived their health status as unhealthy relative to those who did not consume carbonated drinks (OR = 2.15, 95% CI = 1.25-3.71). Skipping breakfast was significantly associated with an increased OR for a negative health perception in girls but not in boys. Compared to adolescents with a normal weight, those with overweight/obesity (OR = 1.75, 95% CI = 1.21-2.52) and underweight (OR = 2.19, 95% CI = 1.25-3.82) showed higher ORs for negative health perception. Positive associations of overweight/obesity and underweight with negative health perception were observed in boys but not in girls. Conclusions: Dietary behaviors and weight status were associated with the health perception in Korean adolescents from multicultural families. These findings suggest that nutrition interventions on breakfast intake and healthy food choices for this population might effectively improve their weight and perceived health status.

한국의 다문화가정 청소년의 잇몸출혈에 관련된 융합 요인 (The Convergence factors associated with gingival bleeding of Oral symptoms in adolescents from Korean multicultural families in South Korea)

  • 본 연구는 한국의 다문화가정 청소년의 잇몸질환과 관련된 융합적 요인을 알아보고자 하였다. 2015년 청소년건강행태 온라인 조사 자료를 제공받아 그 중 698명이 수행되었다. 다문화가정은 어머니가 외국국적을 가진 자를 원칙으로 하였으며(일반적 특성, 구강위생, 구강보건행태) 기술통계와 카이제곱분석을 사용하였으며, 구강질환증상과의 연관성은 이분형 로지스틱 회귀분석이 사용되었다. 잇몸출혈은 여자에서 0.67(0.64-0.71), 고등학생에서 0.84(0.80-0.88), 경제 상태는 못사는 편에서 0.86(0.82-0.90), 행복인지에서는 행복안함에서 1.53(1.43-1.64), 학업성적은 못하는 편에서 1.08(1.03-1.13), 하루 잇솔질 횟수에서는 3회 이상에서 1.18(1.13-1.23)로 나타났지만 통계적으로 유의하지는 않았다. 다문화가정 청소년들의 사회경제적 상태를 고려한다면, 구강질환예방을 위해 더욱더 구강보건교육이 필요할 것으로 사료된다.

  • 본 연구는 다문화 가정 청소년의 정신건강 중 우울과 사회부적응에 미치는 영향요인을 규명하여 건강증진 프로그램개발 및 정책개발의 기초자료를 제공하고자 시도되었다. 연구대상은 211명의 다문화 가정 청소년으로 자기보고식 질문지 방법으로 수집되었으며 자료분석은 SPSS 23. 프로그램에 의해 위계적 회귀분석을 사용하였다. 연구결과를 보면 스트레스, 진로성숙도와 부모의 권위주의적 양육태도가 우울에 중요한 영향력을 보여주었다. 또한 사회적 부적응에는 스트레스, 권위주의적인 양육태도가 부정적 영향을, 탄력성, 진로성숙도와 문화다양성 태도, 개방적 의사소통과 부모의 지지가 긍정적 영향을 주었다. 본 연구는 다문화 가정 청소년에 대한 이해와 우울과 사회부적응 등 정신건강을 위한 개입프로그램 개발에 대한 기초자료를 제공할 수 있다.

다문화 청소년의 지각된 차별감이 민족정체성 혼란에 미치는 영향: 이중문화역량을 통한 부모-자녀 개방형 의사소통의 조절된 매개효과 (Effects of Perceived Discrimination on Multicultural Adolescents' Ethnic Identity Conflict: A Moderated Mediation Effect of Parent-Child Open Communication through Bicultural Competence)

  • This study examined the effects of perceived discrimination on multicultural adolescents regarding feelings of conflict over their ethnic identity by investigating the moderating role of father-child open communication and mother-child open communication mediated by bicultural competence. A total of 234 middle school students (grades 7-8; 139 girls and 95 boys) from multicultural families, from which the father is Korean and the mother is not, participated in the study. Data was collected through an online self-report questionnaire and was analyzed via SPSS 26.0 and Process (Version 4.1) MACRO. The results can be summarized as follows. First, bicultural competence mediated the effects of perceived discrimination on feelings of conflict over one's ethnic identity. Enhanced bicultural competence resulting from a lower perception of discrimination contributed to a reduction in feelings of conflict over one's ethnic identity. Second, the moderated mediation effect of fatherchild open communication was significant, while the effect of mother-child open communication was not. Thus, the mediation relationship (lower perceived discrimination increased bicultural competence and, thus, reduced conflict over one's ethnic identity) grew stronger as the level of father-child open communication increased. The significance of this study lies in uncovering the causal relationships between individual and environmental factors that contribute to ethnic identity development among multicultural adolescents, particularly highlighting the important role of Korean fathers within multicultural households.

다문화가정 중학생 자녀의 자기효능감에 영향을 미치는 요인 연구 (Significant Variables Influencing the Self-Efficacy of Middle School Students of Multicultural Families)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the influences of parental attitude, parenting attitudes, family function and peer attachment on the self-efficacy of middle school students in multicultural families. In particular, peer attachment was used as a mediator to determine the effects of self-efficacy. 302 multicultural family adolescents who enrolled in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do middle schools were surveyed. In order to measure the variables, this study used such scales as parenting attitude scale, family function scale, peer attachment scale and self efficacy scale. The results were analyzed by the PASW 18.0 program. The findings of the study led to the following conclusions; First, it has shown that peer attachment was the only variable that had significant differences by sex in middle school students of multicultural families. Second, the most influential variables of self-efficacy of middle school students in multicultural families was peer attachment among parenting attitude, family function and peer attachment. Third, there was a mediating effect of peer attachment among parenting attitude, family function and self-efficacy for adolescents of multicultural families. The notable distinction of this study was to find that peer attachment variable is the most important factor of self-efficacy. Considering the results in this study, aggressive intervention is necessary in order to improve the self-efficacy of middle school students in multicultural families.

Factors affecting the mental health status of children from multicultural families in South Korea: a cross-sectional descriptive analysis of data from the multicultural adolescents panel study

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify factors affecting the mental health status of children from multicultural families in South Korea. Methods: This study was based on Dahlgren and Whitehead's (1991) rainbow model as a conceptual framework and used data from the second phase of the multicultural adolescents panel study conducted by the National Youth Policy Institute. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed using SPSS version 26.0, with p<.05 considered to indicate statistical significance. Results: In the final model, stress (odds ratio [OR]=0.53, p<.001), life satisfaction (OR=2.09, p=.004), self-esteem (OR=1.73, p=.032), and peer support (OR=1.46, p=.019) affected the mental health status of children from multicultural families. The living and working conditions and general socioeconomic, cultural, and environmental conditions did not significantly influence the mental health status of children from multicultural families in the final model. Conclusion: As components of Dahlgren and Whitehead's model, individual hereditary and lifestyle factors, as well as social and community networks, affected the mental health status of children from multicultural families. Therefore, in order to improve the mental health of children from multicultural families, efforts are needed to alleviate their stress, increase life satisfaction and self-esteem, and strengthen their social support.

스포츠 활동을 통한 다문화 청소년과 한국 청소년의 공감과 친사회적 행동이 학교생활행복에 미치는 영향의 융합적 연구 (A Convergence Study of the Influence of Empathy and Prosocial Behavior on School Life Happiness of Multicultural and Korean Adolescents through Sports Activity)

  • 이 연구는 스포츠 활동에 함께 참여하는 다문화 청소년과 한국 청소년들의 공감과 친사회적 행동이 학교생활행복에 미치는 영향을 분석하는데 그 목적이 있었으며, 스포츠 활동에 참여하는 청소년과 참여하지 않는 청소년 총 461명을 대상으로 분석한 결과, 스포츠 활동에 참여하며, 스포츠 활동 경력이 많을수록 공감과 친사회적 행동 및 학교생활행복 수준이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 스포츠 활동에 참여하는 청소년들의 공감과 친사회적 행동 및 학교생활행복 하위요인들 간에는 정적인 상관관계가 있었으며, 학교생활행복에 영향을 미치는 공감과 친사회적 행동 하위요인들로는 관계형성과 의사소통, 협동하기, 도움주기, 감정표현, 위안하기의 요인들이 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이 연구의 결과들은 다문화가정과 한국가정 청소년들의 학교생활행복에 있어서 스포츠 활동을 통한 공감과 친사회적 행동에 대해 다루는 것의 중요성을 시사한다.
