  • The parallel coordinate plot is a graphical data analysis technique for plotting multivariate data. The parallel coordinate plot overcomes the visualization problem of the Cartesian coordinate system for dimensions greater than 4. But, using different ordering of coordinate axes in the parallel coordinate plot of the same data may make different interpretations. Hence, we can use the regular polyprism parallel coordinate plot as an alternative for overcoming the variable arrangement problem of the parallel coordinate plot.

  • It has been routine practice in regression analysis to check the validity of the assumed model by the use of regression diagnostics tools. Outliers and influential observations often distort the regression output in an undesired manner. Jang and Anderson-Cook (Quality and Reliability Engineering International, 30, 1409-1425, 2014) proposed a graphical method (called a firework plot) so that there could be an exploratory visualization of the trace of the impact of the possible outliers and influential observations on individual regression coefficients and the overall residual sum of the squares measure. This paper further extends a graphical approach to a multi-response surface methodology problem.

  • This paper presented a new experimental gain tuning technique for a Multi-Axis Servo System. First, the investigation for proportional gain of velocity control loop by using a Dynamic Signal Analyzer (DSA) was performed. Using the FUNCTION characteristic of DSA based on the Bode plot, the Bode plot of open loop transfer function was obtained. In turn, the integral gain of a servo controller can be found out by using the Integration time constant extracted from the Bode plot of open loop transfer function. In the meanwhile, the positional gain of the servo controller has been obtained by using the Bode plot of the closed loop transfer function. We have also proposed the technique to find out an optimal parameter of a notch filter, which has a great influence on vibration reduction, by using the damping factor extracted from the Bode plot of closed loop transfer function.

  • Mosaic plots, proposed by Hartigan and Kleiner (1981, 1984), are very useful in visualizing categorical data. In mosaic plot, multi-way classified cell frequencies are represented by rectangles with proportional area. The plot is easy to understand while preserving the information contained in the data. Plot's appearance, however, does change substantially depending on the order of variables and the orders of categories with variable put into the plot. In this study, we propose the algorithms for ordering variables and categories of the categorical data to be explored via mosaic plots. We demonstrate our methods to three well-known datasets: Titanic, Housing and PreSex.

  • Process monitoring of output variables affecting final performance have been mainly executed in semiconductor manufacturing process. However, even earlier detection of causes of output variation cannot completely prevent yield loss because a number of wafers after detecting them must be re-processed or cast away. Semiconductor manufacturers have put more attention toward monitoring process inputs to prevent yield loss by early detecting change-point of the process. In the paper, we propose the method to efficiently monitor functional input variables in multi-phase semiconductor manufacturing process. Measured input variables in the multi-phase process tend to be of functional structured form. After data pre-processing for these functional input data, change-point analysis is practiced to the pre-processed data set. If process variation occurs, key variables affecting process variation are selected using contribution plot for monitoring efficiency. To evaluate the propriety of proposed monitoring method, we used real data set in semiconductor manufacturing process. The experiment shows that the proposed method has better performance than previous output monitoring method in terms of fault detection and process monitoring.

  • Track While Scan(DS) system which can track the multitargets in dense target environment is designed. There are three tasks to be performed: I) Target Detection and 'plot' formation, ii) Plot to track association and, iii) Track updatement. The conventional approach has been to tackle each of these tasks separately. This paper outlines a method for jointly optimizing all the three tasks and presents implementation aspects.

  • In this paper, we have developed the MHDA scheme for data association. This scheme is important in providing a computationally feasible alternative to complete enumeration of JPDA which is intractable. We have proved that given an artificial measurement and track's configuration, MHDA scheme converges to a proper plot in a finite number of iterations. Also, a proper plot which is not the global solution can be corrected by reinitializing one or more times. In this light, even if the performance is enhanced by using the MHDA, we also note that the difficulty in tuning the parameters of the MHDA is critical aspect of this scheme. The difficulty cat however, be overcome by developing suitable automatic instruments that will iteratively verify convergence as the network parameters vary.

  • Philip Roth rejects the narrative unity and singularity of the traditional novel and creates instead a multi-levelled, fragmentary, and repetitive narrative. It is not easy to distinguish fact from fiction in The Plot Against America. As an entertaining and creative work of the postmodern historiographic metafiction, Philip Roth's The Plot Against America interrogates the existence of historically verifiable facts, the validity of authentic and official version of history, and reexamines the narrative conventions of history writing. The aim of this paper is to examine Roth's narrative experiment or 'thought experiment' and to explore the intention of creating alternative history in The Plot Against America. Roth does a 'thought experiment' in The Plot Against America. In this cautionary "what if" political fable, Roth hypothesizes that in 1940 aviation hero Charles Lindbergh, an ardent isolationist who was sympathetic to Hiltler, won the presidency. Jewish communities are stunned and terrified as America flirts with fascism and anti-semitism. Reimagining his children-with considerable fact mixed in with the fiction-Roth narrates an alternative history that has an unsettling plausibility. Roth has constructed a brilliantly telling and disturbing historical prism by which to refract the American psyche as it pertain to the discord of individual, race, history in The Plot Against America. Roth analyzes the life of individual in a historic space, the situation of anti-semitism in world of invisible order, racial conflict between black and white in world of visible order, and the darkest side of national power in this work. Roth's stories argue for the equality of various cultures grounded on the common notion of humanity, for an ethic of mutual respect, and for the peaceful resolution of conflicts.

  • Accurate measurement of KIC values for gas pipeline steels is important for assessing pipe safety using failure assessment diagrams. As direct measurement of KIC was impossible for the API X70 pipeline steel, multi-specimen fracture tests were conducted to measure JIC using three-point bend geometry. The J values were calculated from load-displacement (F-δ) plots, and the associated crack extensions were measured from the fracture surface of test specimens. Valid data points were found for the constructed J-Δa plot resulting in JIC=356kN/m. More data points were added analytically to the J-Δa plot to increase the number of data points without performing additional experiments for different J-Δa zones where test data was unavailable. Consequently, displacement (δ) and crack-growth (Δa) from multi-specimen tests (with small displacements) were used simultaneously, resulting in the variation of Δa-δ (crack growth law) and δ-Δa obtained for this steel. For new Δa values, corresponding δ values were first calculated from δ-Δa. Then, corresponding J values for the obtained δ values were calculated from the area under the F-δ record of a full-fractured specimen (with large displacement). Given Δa and J values for new data points, the developed J-Δa plot with extra data points yielded a satisfactory estimation of JIC=345kN/m with only a -3.1% error. This is promising and showed that the developed technique could ease the estimation of JIC significantly and reduce the time and cost of expensive extra fracture toughness tests.
