  • The present study considers multi-level approach for the analysis of parametric roll phenomena. Three kinds of computation method, GM variation, impulse response function (IRF), and Rankine panel method, are applied for the multi-level approach. IRF and Rankine panel method are based on the weakly nonlinear formulation which includes nonlinear Froude-Krylov and restoring forces. In the computation result of parametric roll occurrence test in regular waves, IRF and Rankine panel method show similar tendency. Although the GM variation approach predicts the occurrence of parametric roll at twice roll natural frequency, its frequency criteria shows a little difference. Nonlinear roll motion in bichromatic wave is also considered in this study. To prove the unstable roll motion in bichromatic waves, theoretical and numerical approaches are applied. The occurrence of parametric roll is theoretically examined by introducing the quasi-periodic Mathieu equation. Instability criteria are well predicted from stability analysis in theoretical approach. From the Fourier analysis, it has been verified that difference-frequency effects create the unstable roll motion. The occurrence of unstable roll motion in bichromatic wave is also observed in the experiment.

  • The effects of TRansformation Induced Plasticity(TRIP) phenomena on the plastic deformation of 0.2C-1.5Si-1.5Mn multiphase steels have been investigated at various heat treatment and stress conditions. In order to estimate the formability, the hole expansion(HE) tests and the tensile tests were carried out. The formability evaluated from the uni-axial tensile tests was quite different from the formability measured from multi-axial HE-tests. Consequently, the formability in the multi-axial stress state decreased due to the extinction of the retained austenite relatively at earlier deformation stage and the production of irregular α' martensite. However, the defects of TRIP-steels were initiated exactly at the boundary between transformed martensite and ferrite matrix regardless of stress state. In addition, new experimental formula is proposed in order to predict the multi-axial formability of the TRIP steels from the results of uniaxial tensile test.

  • We investigate the performance of multi-body wave energy converters (WECs). This investigation considers multiple scattering of water waves by the buoys of a WEC under the generalized mode approach. Predominantly, the effect of a WEC's configuration on its energy extraction is studied in this research. First, single-row terminator and single-column attenuator arrays of vertical cylinders have been studied. The performance of these attenuator arrays shows that the wall effect induced by the periodic buoys influences the wave propagation and energy extraction in these WECs. Further studies show that a single-row terminator array of vertical cylinders performs better than the corresponding single-column attenuator array. Subsequently, multi-row terminator arrays of vertical cylinders are investigated by conducting a parametric study. This parametric study shows that the hydrodynamic property of three resonance phenomena makes energy extraction efficiency drop down, and the magnitude of energy extracted oscillates between the resonance points in these WECs. Finally, a 4×8 terminator array of vertical cylinders is studied to determine the effect of various dx (x-directional distance between adjacent rows) within this WEC on its performance. In particular, this study enforces at least two equal dx values within the 4×8 terminator array of vertical cylinders. It shows that a small value of this dx leads to better energy extraction efficiency in some of these various dx arrays than that of a corresponding regular array with the same dx.

  • The turbulent flow and vortex shedding phenomena around pantograph panhead of high speed train were investigated and compared with available experimental data and other simulations. The pantograph head was simplified to be a square-cross-section pillar and assumed to be no interference with other bodies. The Reynolds number (Re) was 22,000. The LES(large eddy simulation) of FDS code was applied to solve the momentum equations and the Wener-Wengle wall model was employed to solve the near wall turbulent flow. Smagorinsky model($C_s$=0.2) was used as SGS(subgrid scale) model. The total grid numbers were about 9 millions and the analyzed domain was divided into 12 multi blocks which were communicated with each other by MPI. The time-averaged mainstream flows were calculated and well compared with experimental data. The phased-averaged quantities had also a good agreement with experimental data. The near-wall turbulence should be carefully treated by wall function or direct resolution to get successful application of LES methods.

  • When the steam is used as working fluid in fluid machinery, different from other gases as air, phase transition (steam condensation) can occur and it affects not only the flow fields, but also machine performance & efficiency. Therefore, considering phase transition phenomena in CFD calculation is required to achieve accurate prediction of steam flow and non-equilibrium wet-steam model is needed to simulate realistic steam condensing flow. In this research, non-equilibrium wet-steam model is implemented on in-house code(T-Flow), the flow fields including phase transition phenomena in convergent-divergent nozzle are studied and compared to results of advance researches.

  • Recently air pollution has become an important issue. So, as tile number of vehicles increases, the noise pollution has become one of the most serious social issues nowadays. It is a muffler, which is one of the vehicle components. that has the hugest impact on the noise from the vehicle. And it also has a direct influence on the engine performance. So lately the research is proceeding on tile semi-active muffler which can control the back pressure variably by setting up the exhaust variable valve in the baffle to improve its internal structure. The inner parts of muffler which consist of a baffle, pipes and etc. appear to have the complicated turbulence phenomena by the pulsational wave of an unsteady state in the engine and by the structural characteristics of the inner parts. To analyze these phenomena, it is required to have an analysis of its constant quantity and quality. Therefore this study is to analyze with PIV measurement which can analyze the time and space variables, not with the point measurement method like former multi-point anemometer. It is to suggest proper design variables which need to make internal structure of the muffler improve though comparison between the passive type muffler and the semi-active muffler by fabricating a muffler which can be visualized.

  • Radiation effects on materials are inherently multiscale phenomena in view of the fact that various processes spanning a broad range of time and length scales are involved. A multiscale modeling approach to embrittlement of pressure vessel steels is presented here. The approach includes an investigation of the mechanisms of defect accumulation, microstructure evolution and the corresponding effects on mechanical properties. An understanding of these phenomena is required to predict the behavior of structural materials under irradiation. We used molecular dynamics (MD) simulations at an atomic scale to study the evolution of high-energy displacement cascade reactions. The MD simulations yield quantitative information on primary damage. Using a database of displacement cascades generated by the MD simulations, we can estimate the accumulation of defects over diffusional length and time scales by applying kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. The evolution of the local microstructure under irradiation is responsible for changes in the physical and mechanical properties of materials. Mechanical property changes in irradiated materials are modeled by dislocation dynamics simulations, which simulate a collective motion of dislocations that interact with the defects. In this paper, we present a multi scale modeling methodology that describes reactor pressure vessel embrittlement in a light water reactor environment.

  • Surge phenomena in the zone of reduced speeds in a system of a nine-stage axial flow compressor coupled with ducts were studied analytically by use of a surge transient simulation code. Main results are as follows. (1) Expansion of apparently stable, non-surge working area of the pressure vs. flow field beyond the initial stage-stall line was predicted by the code in the lower speed region. The area proved analytically to be caused by significantly mismatched stage-working conditions, particularly with the front stages deep in the rotating stall branch of the characteristics, as was already known in situ and in steady-state calculations also. (2) Surge frequencies were found to increase for decreasing compressor speeds as far as the particular compressor system was concerned. (3) The tendency was found to be explained by a newly introduced volume-modified reduced surge frequency. It suggests that the surge frequency is related intimately with the process of emptying and filling of air into the delivery volume. (4) The upstream range of movement of the fluid mass having once passed through the compressor in surge was found to reduce toward the lower speeds, which could have caused additionally the increase in surge frequency. (5) The concept of the volume-modified reduced surge frequency was able to explain, though qualitatively at present, the behaviors of the area-pressure ratio parameter for the stall stagnation boundary proposed earlier by the author.

  • The RELAP5 code has been developed for best-estimate simulation of transients and accidents for pressurized water reactors and their associated systems, but it has not been fully assessed for those of CANDU reactors. However, a previous study suggested that the RELAP5 code could be applicable to simulate the transients and accidents for CANDU reactors. Nevertheless, it is indicated that there are some works to be resolved, such as modeling of headers and multi-channel simulation for the reactor core, etc. Therefore, this study has been initiated with an aim to identify the code applicability for all the postulated transients and accidents in CANDU reactors. In the present study, the small inlet header break experiment (B8604) in the RD-14 test facility was simulated with RELAP5/MOD3.2 code. The RELAP5 results were also compared with both experimental data and those of CATHENA analyses performed by AECL and the analyses demonstrated the code's capability to predict major . phenomena occurring in the transient with sufficient accuracy for both Qualitative and quantitative viewpoint However, some discrepancies in the depressurization of the primary heat transport system after the break and the consequent time delay of the major phenomena were also observed.
